Exeter v Bath
Renewing..

..rivalries at Sandy Park. Fresh from our Wednesday Premiership cup efforts it’s all change personnel wise with the last of the three games in a week. Bath will be keen to avenge their agonising defeat at the Rec 16 – 23 back in November last year. Sandy Park, is never an easy place to go for Bath with an intense local rivalry having developed since Exeter emerged from the Championship in 2010. The ground is anything but sandy though technically sand does form the base of the excellent DESSO Grassmaster hybrid playing surface laid 8 years ago now! Let’s hope we get a similar surface at the Recreation Ground one day.
Its unclear if our club captain Charlie Ewels will return given his red card dismissal in the England Ireland game, seems its all down to whether he has done his homework (more of that later). Exeter might also without centre Tom Hendrickson having been dismissed in similar circumstances the same weekend. Technically neither player could argue about their dismissal but Rob Baxter has views about chest tackles and his message to his players is that upright or ‘chest-to-chest’ tackling with force is too great a risk in the current climate. Let’s see how that one pans out as sometimes forwards simply can’t resist smashing into each other!
Exeter in recent times had been a paragon of consistency but this season they started poorly and whilst recent form has seen them improving, they suffered an uncharacteristic defeat to Worcester Warriors recently courtesy of Hendrickson’s indiscretion. Sunday’s loss to premiership leaders Leicester may mean their chances of a playoff position are diminishing.
For Bath even in this stuttering season a win away to ‘the Chiefs’ might be too much to wish for. Perhaps Exeter are struggling with their new identity, they are visually leaving behind their native American connection with their new Iron Age Chiefs image however, the audible contribution clearly remains as evidenced at last week’s Tiger’s home defeat, their sixth of the season incidentally. It would be nice to see the wailing left behind, though I’m not sure what the Dumnonii Tribe’s alternative would be to be honest?
Exeter’s form dip might be attributed to the new laws introduced this season, whereas in seasons previous we saw their relentless pick and go 5 metres out failure to score from this approach this season failed attempts result in a goal line dropout. This has reduced the use of this tactic and as a consequence eroded one of the Chiefs USPs.
What remains is the strength and the physical domination of the likes of Dave Ewers and Don Armand, Exeter could conceivably see the return of Jannes Kirsten who failed to resist the South Africans propensity for collisions and was cited after the Worcester game. Hendrickson is another who may also return if they can complete their World Rugby's Coaching Intervention Process which would shorten the ban. This also applies to Bath’s Charlie Ewels, we can only live in hope as we could well do with his bulk.
As in previous years I strongly suspect, this game will be decided by the physicality of the forwards but I’m sure both Baxter and Hately will be hoping that the collisions are sympathetic ones and the game isn’t decided by the colour of the card.
One of Exeter’s most dangerous features in recent times has been their back three where the likes of O'Flaherty (leaving for Sale next season), Nowell, Woodburn on the wing and the exciting Josh Hodge (21) at full back when Stuart Hogg isn’t available.
So, what hope Bath? If Exeter have had vulnerability in any area this season, then their lineout catch and drive has been to be unpredictable, this has not helped by Luke Cowan-Dickie’s long-term knee injury so that battle might be one to watch.
Getting the ball from forwards to the wide strike force has also been laboured with Joe Simmonds failing to fire as in previous seasons. Ollie Devotto is still missing and with Hendrickson’s involvement in question a reliance on Whitten in the centre has been evident. Chiefs have looked to strengthen this area recently with the recent signing of the Rory O’Loughlin from Leinster together with a trial for Tom Hardwick the ex-Tiggers fly half.
If Bath have an edge anywhere it may be midfield with Cipriani and Bailey together with Ojomoh (fitness?) and JJ may well have a more creative edge.
There are signs that Bath may well have called on internal resources to conjure up some refreshing attacking intent given Saturday’s draw at the Rec. It does seem though that as the season draws to a close some players are in need of rest and recouperation. Faletau, Richards and Ben Spencer being amongst them. Perhaps regular losses (at club and international level) are both physical and emotionally exhausting, the alternative though is that Johann Christoffel van Graan, our new incoming head coach might need to add fitness to his list of ‘things to do’ for next season. Bath fans have had to endure too many tense finishes to games this season, somehow, I suspect this game is destined to be similar.

It would not be the most shocking thing in the world for a Bath win.............still very unlikely.
Thanks Typhoo!!
Well spotted BSJ glad my dreadful sense of humour wasn't wasted.

Neither side have anything, realistically, to play for but Bailey, Muir and even Cipriani are far better than anything we have to offer.

Expect Bath to win this at a canter. You (Bath) are getting better precisely when we (Exeter) are falling apart quite spectacularly. We should have thumped a not very good Leicester side last week but gave up stupid tries and woeful line out possession throughout the game.
Neither side have anything, realistically, to play for but Bailey, Muir and even Cipriani are far better than anything we have to offer.
Seems to be a brutal self assessment, personally I think you have had you key points of attack, line out and pick and go neutralised this season for a couple of different reasons. Your key players aren't suddenly rubbish but you might need to work out a way to get over the line in a different way.
In fairness it was only a matter of time before the game and the Prem worked out how to neutralise your biggest strength.
On the result, this season we have found some unique ways to lose, sometimes from winning positions, we are hoping we have used them all up but I for one am not totally sure about that.

I still think their big strengths are exactly where we are weaker, defending rolling maul from lineout and the inevitable incessant red zone pick and dive
Once again, for me, this game in this season especially at this stage is far more about the performance, individual and collective, than the result - expectations will different next year
It would be a major shock if Bath won this.

Looks like Nathan’s last game for Bath. He is returning to Briz on 4 April. Thanks for your excellent performances in the BBW and off field, Nathan.

Maybe just resting him after an intense period and with Hughes going back to Bris after this game? He will be needed for the rest of the season.

Since he has returned to us uninjured his time off probably includes some catching up on odd jobs at home, you know, climb up that ladder to fix some roof guttering, use a chop saw for the soffits, replace that leaking ridge tile..... what could possibly go wrong?....
I think that Exeter pack is far too big for us to handle though. Can see us fading very badly with 20 to go.
I hope Nathan Hughes has a stormer as he has been player of the season for me!

and we have looked better coached since Hooper stepped back (could be coincidence!).
What has he stepped back from he has never been a coach, he is the DoR and still is.

The limelight mostly. His reduction in public profile has matched an upswing in performance which as I mentioned may be coincidence but there seems to be correlation.
EG as Chair
Brent Janse Van Rensburg coming into defence
Williams leaving
Ryan Davis stepping up?
Hatley being able to focus more on forwards
Hoops doing less media/Hatley doing more
More players to select from.
I suspect they've all contributed to some degree, but that's way too many changes to identify a single cause.

IMO the upswing in performance is down to the fact that we signed Nathan Hughes and suddenly our pack was beginning to get onto the front foot. I also think our defence was much better and our attacking and off loading game improved considerably. I don’t think Hoops being in or out of the limelight has anything to do with our better performances!

+1, but the look for an easy answer and or blame can be tempting. (Which is why I have, in the main, stopped looking at the forum)
Glad that you all enjoyed taking what I said and reduced it to the thing you wanted to be angry about.
Strongest team of the season? Ignored.
Injuries? Nothing.
Hooper being less visible and Bath doing better? YOU CALLED HOOPER A MURDERER AND YOU ARE A FOOL TO DO SO!!
The Exeter pack are huge and that seems to be our achilles heel? Sorry, we are too cross about what you didn’t say about Hooper to decode language!
Hughes needs some love? Sorry Hooper hater, this is not important.
I have been a stalwart on this forum for about 15-20 years but I can see why it is dying.
Tiresome.
Last months stats

A lot of us thought the team looked lost and confused in early season, as though there were some mixed messages in the players heads. Maybe the new management has bought some clarity and purpose to the coaching.
Personally I have no problem with Hoops in the limelight, if he can take on some of the press work that is a burden off the shoulders of the technical coaches so they can focus on the important stuff.
Its down to a numbers of factors but surely the fact that we have had players returning from injury and the outstanding performance of the likes of Richards, Doughty, Cordwell, Butt, Bailey and Mojo.
Hooper's involvement in the Academy is clearly to be praised highly but it does seem to me that letting the coaches coach and also having to account for themselves has upped their game.
Ed Griffiths has clearly implemented these changes, he is doing exactly what a Chairman should do, leading with solid rugby decisions without fuss.
PS Forgot Ben Spencer!

I actually think that's a better balance for sub with Butt covering 12, 13 and wing. Cips covering 10 and 15. OB 10, 12 and 15.

Might get worked up next season if we are bottom again with a proper coaching setup. Stopped caring about this season a long time ago. I’ve accepted Bath are playing at championship level so don’t get too upset when we are beaten.

The problem is that the failure to make any progress this season & address any of our failings will make the job that much harder for the new coaching team. The sort of 23 we put out next year is not going to be so very different in quality to today’s lineup. The new coaches are not miracle workers & we still have Hatley with the same mindset as he has currently.. To always expect us to get thumped at Exeter whatever team we put out & however badly they are playing takes pessimism to a new level.
More concerned about injuries to Valery and TDG... What happened?

Not sure I agree BH, key will be JvG and JP Ferreira, they will have had time to put in place organisation and practice it in pre season. I know you worry about Hatley and I share some of your concerns but the leading voices where it matters will be different, we will lose perhaps 25% of the squad and get some key positions boosted plus those injured will be fit again. That for me will make a massive difference.
One thing I've been thinking about is our fitness we really shouldn't drop of in intensity so dramatically not sure what others think but it happen too often for me.

Losing Morosov was huge and I hope we're not in this position at prop next season.
2nd half Bath compounded their weaknesses (lineout, decision making etc.) and it was over...
The amazing thing - given our usual discipline - was that was our ONLY penalty of the first half.
Quote:CoochieCoo
The two tries before half time was a big turning point for me. Rugby is a mind game and this brought an element of doubt. We need leaders to pull players up in such circumstances and I am not sure we have that at the moment.
I heard Bayliss’s reaction afterwards & he was really upset about the loss & how it had happened. That was what concerned him rather than looking for positives which is too easy & overshadows the failings. He sounds like a potential leader going forward. I am inclined to think it is more a question of fitness, particularly of the mental side relating to the ability to focus at high intensity for an entire half of rugby. Hopefully the. Munster men will find the key to this, maybe helped by an influx of the right sort of players. To score 22 points in the first 35 minutes & losing the remaining 45 mins 37-0 is entirely unacceptable at any level & cannot be papered over which ever coaches are currently in charge.
Yes, we lost concentration at the end of each half. But fitness can be improved and I have no doubt JvG will have it high on his to-do list, but the ability to play with an open mind is gold dust and it looks like we we have a bunch of players who can do just that.
Horse, TdG and OB2 oozed class but...
My MotM - Joe Cokanasiga. Lovely to see him back and that was comfortably the best we've seen from him in the BBW. Long may it continue.
... IMHO, of course.
Now in Honolulu

Score not reflective of the game. But fitness, physical and mental, need a serious upgrade off-season.
Also and this is a separate point but I was listening to the radio and Nahum Merigan mentioned that 'we back our maul which has been a great weapon for us for a couple of years'. Which is very concerning, because our attacking maul is probably the worst in the league and this indicates, frankly, delusion.
Quote:)The gulf between our starting front row and replacements is massive and Exeter did also target our fitness yesterday.[/quote
That is a worry in itself because the 3 replacement front rowers are still going to be relied on going forward, even if they are slightly further down the pecking order. We’ll start out with a few more fit players in the front 5 but apart from the considerable addition of Atwood it’s unlikely to be transformed into one to compete with the best.
The first 30 mins was some of the best rugby that I have seen Bath play in a while - Hughes and Underhill in particular were superhuman, smashing those big Exe lads off the ball time after time. Valeriy Morozov going off was a big turning point as up until then he (and the Bath scrum) had been turning the screw and Wayne had a picture of a dominant Bath set piece. Then Bath make the sub, start to lose scrums and the replacement gave away the pen and the whole house of cards fell down.
In terms of fitness it has to be remembered that Bath had made about 3 times the number of tackles that Exe had in the first 20, nobody in the world could keep that up for 8 mins and as has been said before the replacements (who are well down the pecking in order in many cases) weren't of the same quality.
Another disappointing result to add to a season full of them. Good luck to the ST renewals team...
[24/25 adoptee: Francois van Wyk]
Exeter have done this to us repeatedly- wear us down and then run riot as we tire. Depressingly familiar.
As said if you are constantly defending/tackling it will take its toll. We don't have the tools to control games. I always come back to our pack and set piece just not being reliable enough. Not sure if that is fair regarding yesterday?
You need a good bench against teams like Exeter and we were lacking a bit there. I think cordwell is what he is- there is no way your 4th/5th choice prop (using next to no cap presumably ) is going to not struggle against high quality opposition.
Morozov has picked up a lot of injuries in his time here- not what you are looking for from injury cover. Shame as think he could be v good if he got a run of games. Was it a head knock?
Then not too much later, under our sticks, the scrum seemed to wheel again and they were awarded a penalty? Now, not being able to rewind I could have got a lot of this wrong, but I felt when they attacked from their 22 they made what felt like 80 metres with that one attack? Given how dominant we were in the scrum in the first half, my thoughts were that the wheeled scrum should have been a penalty to us, but couldn't be certain.
Anyone with the ability to rewind and check, if they could put me out of my misery I'd be most appreciative! I know it won't change the result, but that series of play effected such a massive change in momentum
Quote:Oh, well that ended up an bit more as anticipated. Some nice interplay and the attack seems to have come to life once we started getting just a little forward pressure in recent games.dcsh
OMG this is some good stuff from Bath! Keep it up boys!
Hopefully no injuries that will keep anyone out of the next match, but they have a bit longer to recover with the final pool round of the Challenge Cup next week before we play in the round of 16!
I would have been frankly amazed if we had won at Sandy Park. But there are at least signs of spring, which with virtually the same coaching staff is surprising. Bit concerned that some observe that our fitness levels not good enough but surely that is all part of not mentally being utterly used to winning even in tight games. i.e. head stuff. Playing the full 40 mins of the second half has always found out the slightly less fit? Or am I talking nonsense again. ...........
I am not too disappointed with the result in the first half we showed with a dominant pack the danger we possess and that will hopefully delight JVG & Co, Morosov going off was the key to Chiefs getting back into the game.
In many ways despite the scoreline which didn't reflect a true reflection of the game it reminded me of when we were on our way down and Exeter on their way up - yes we won the game but you could see the "writing on the wall".
The confident team will know their time will come later in the game. Was that the case yesterday or not that simple?
Not surprised at the result but encouraged by opinions of those that watched.
Quote:Ali1969
Worrying that Tom Dunn had a pretty poor game again even in the first half when we had supremacy and especially with the rumour that Du Toit might be being let go and Dunn retained, not convinced Tom is the better option to keep - no place for sentiment.

To be fair it’s Dunn’s first game back after a long injury lay-off. Until the morning of the game he was meant to have a shorter role off the bench. All of this added to the pressure of the comeback game.
Similarly when Joe C first came back last year he struggled. This season he had two games from the bench to ease him back in. Not many players have their timing etc spot on on the first game back after a long lay off

New players are coming through, some good 'uns will return and some old players are remembering why and how to play. Suspect there might be a squad spring clean and shuffle come May and there is hope that our new brooms will sweep cleaner than the last shower. Things can only get better.
Now if only they could learn to play for the full 80 minutes
Still, reasons for hope. Bailey is growing every week and Cipriani's influence is clear to see. I still wish he'd hit fewer rucks but his feel for the game, the no look passes, the willingness to go from deep are hugely encouraging. Exciting to see what player he becomes over the next decade.

Considering where Bath was in early and mid season and how woeful they were for the full 80, and compare it to where we are now, then it at least gives license for some hope for next season - and that has got to be an uplift of sorts.

Have only seen the tries, was Exeters 2nd try fair? The tackle is made on the Bath line, the 1st Ex player in dives straight over the top where Clark is attempting a steal, next 2 in seal off, Clark is told hands off and try is scored. Did Wayne get that right? Saw similar from Ireland v England where an Irish player went straight off his feet at the ruck and the try was allowed, last try IIRC.
I thought the same, Max C was there to stop it and Wayne told him not to!

Highlights here, diving over the ruck off feat at 2 mins 15 secs. Once the ruck was formed I think Barnes was right to say Clark could not pick up.

Have only seen the tries, was Exeters 2nd try fair? The tackle is made on the Bath line, the 1st Ex player in dives straight over the top where Clark is attempting a steal, next 2 in seal off, Clark is told hands off and try is scored. Is a ruck still a ruck if everyone is off their feet? In which case as it wasn't behind the back foot of either team why could the Exe player pick it up?

As I said it seems diving off feet seems to get some slack these days, it bought Ex an extra second to get support in. I have seen defenders avoid the clear out and refs say the clearing player fell over the ruck because of it, maybe that is what Barnes was thinking but the Ex player never really joined the ruck, just went straight over the top and got in Clark's way.
Maybe a ref could put me right, I am only drawing comparisons with similar incidents I have seen.

Same, I just thought that it was odd at the time and Clark looked pretty frustrated about it too. A 9 can't pick it up with his / her hands from the middle of a ruck can they, thought they had to use their feet to get it out? Law 15/4 means that Clark could have kicked it but he was upto his thighs in bodies so wasn't a viable option.
