Great article, a really enjoyable read but my lurcher wants words - she can mix it in the wind and rain, trust me

I wonder how many of your readers (not the younger ones) get "The D(F)og on the Tyne.

Always dread this fixture. Newcastle always put on a strong performance at home, and we always seem to pick up a bad injury or two.

I've cycled across to Lindisfarne and a beauty of a ride it is. As I'm crossing along the causeway at low tide there were two young blokes on mountain bikes cycling across the mud following the old pilgrim's path. Never seen anything like it

My wife and I and two friends went to the European Champions cup final in St James’ Park in 2019. We stayed in a house on the coast for a week during which we also visited Lindisfarne. We went into a small shop selling artwork, wearing our Bath Rugby gear and the owner reached under the counter and produced a cup of tea ….in a Bath Rugby mug! True story. He lived in the Bath area for many years before migrating “up North” but was still BB&W at heart!

Another game where I assume we lose more players than we get back?

Potentially from saints game missing dunn (hia, hopefully ok), roux (went off inj, hopefully ok), aranas (went off inj, hopefully ok) attwood banned, cam and josh prob in scot squad, coko prob make eng matchday squad.

Any coming back? Spencer hopefully? Prob a week or two too early for Bailey? Is rmc ok- rested last time? Williams if there isn't a cap issue?

Think during Nov we will hopefully see the likes of stuart, attwood, underhill, coetzee, bailey, francis, tdg back in the mix

Underhill was 12 weeks from his operation in mid Sept so I wouldn't expect to see him this side of Christmas.

We have it in reverse 'ere - cmonbath is a proud Geordie/Northumbrian who lives in Bath and a staunch Bath fan!

I cant recall any reports of an injury. His absence/silence reminds me of Davey Wilson before he went back to Newcastle.

I would keep Worboys at 10. We're not going to win the league. Searle is very short term cover. So let's use him as that, cover on the bench for Worboys. Mojo at 12.

Ted Hill and Fergus Lee-Warner will make their first Bath Rugby starts as Johann van Graan makes eight changes to the starting XV for the trip to Newcastle Falcons.

Blindside flanker Hill impressed on debut in the win over Northampton Saints before committing his long-term future to the club, while versatile forward Lee-Warner has made an impact as a replacement in his two outings to date.

After 13 caps for Bath last season, Valeriy Morozov is in at loosehead prop after committing for the remainder of the 2022/23 season and D’Arcy Rae returns at tighthead.

Max Green has recovered from his ankle issue to take his place at scrum-half, and Max Ojomoh replaces Cameron Redpath who is starting for Scotland against Fiji.

So far as I am aware Joseph is fit to play. The fact that he is on the bench with such a depleted team I think really shows that his goose is cooked at Bath. He should never have been offered a contract extension and having been offered it he shouldn't have signed it.

Would feel a lot more comfortable with an experienced 9 outside Worboys but hoping he can build on his fantastic performance vs Saints.

Atwood will be a big miss. Not seen much of FLW but hoping he can fill that void. Wonder if Etete would've been a better replacement given his size but then not seen much of him either.

Be a tight game. Hopefully Mickey Young is still as ponderous as he was at Bath and slows their attack right down.

Dunny looked like he was beered up playing the spin around the broom game after his head bang last week, so I too am glad he’s fit to play.

So only 19 first team players out injured, that's got to be as good as it's been for a couple of years now!

Hopefully playing on a plastic pitch isn't going to leave us further depleted for next week.

Need to start getting some players back at a quicker rate than we lose more as its pretty absurd.

Do have a good number due back in nov/Dec so just need some better luck for a bit.

Glad morozov , roux and mcconnachie are recovered and bayliss is available otherwise that would be a pretty ropey 23.

Young/green side - but at least 8 youngsters in the squad, the dividends from which will be cashed next season when relegation/meaningful competition returns.

A big change in personnel overall from say, 12 months ago. Not a bad bench though, that could be the difference.

But there does seem quite an element of the gold and blue in your match day squad, most of whom will have played against Newcastle at Sixways earlier in the season, a game which was won convincingly.

Even in your own list you can see that Bath arent depleted at 13 so not sure that follows. But for me he hasn't shown anything to cement his position at 13 even if Lawrence wasn't here and playing brilliantly. As I understand it JJ didn't have people falling over themselves to make him attractive offers anyway.

is this ref mad? Bringing the game back 50 metres for a penalty at the scrum? Not called at the time I am bewildered?

Have our backs ever met? To be fair, they don’t know each other well, but the forwards are carrying well then we’re doing nothing through 9-10-12. Searle on asap I’d say.

Think we’re playing into a very strong wind so just need to be in the game at the break.

Handling poor from both teams. Max Green's kicking is ok but his passing is often behind the man.

Honestly after the first ten minutes, our defence has been really good.

I just wish we could play and concentrate for the full 80 minutes!!

Lineout and scrum in the first half poor but much improved. Remember how disrupted this backline is. Two scrum halves, three centres, one flanker and one fullback.

It's a game we've won off the back of a good bit off skill and very good defence.

My comment was to Dannyf2’s point that we haven’t won up there for yonks not your observation BSJ. As it happens we haven’t lost up there in yonks!

In short green shoots in our basics but disciple was a disappointment.

p.s. also thought box kick / chase looked much more co-ordinated!

Worcester players have had a big impact for us. Thought Max Green played well. Lee-Warner had a massive game, my MOTM.

Definitely seem much more solid at the back, TdG has a hell of a job to get that shirt back off Gallagher.

Super Ted was Ted’s nickname at Worcester.

Gutting as it is, it’s nice to see a group playing together and playing well. I’ll be very happy to see Bath climb the league.

Good result. Falcons is a tough place to visit.
Really great to see the continued momentum in the right direction. What signings Lawrence (in particular) and Hill have been.

Just watched the "game". My word, that was poor. From both sides, but especially from us. I really couldn't work out what our game plan was - we seemed to be entirely reactive. Line was just bad, the scrum was immediately on the wrong side of the ref and the passing was erratic (at best). And yet we won.

It turns out we can do it on the proverbial "wet Saturday afternoon in Newcastle" which argues that the "dog" is there and which bodes very well for the future.

My MotM - ummm... errrr... ahhhh... Rollover

Just back from game and the ref got the scrums all wrong in the first half as Newcastle were not taking the hit it was so obvious and Mazarov got on the wrong side of the ref and touch judge. We dominated their scrum all game when allowed to scrum and shunted them back and only in the second half did we get our rewards with a string of penalties including a very important scrum 5m out as Newcastle turned on the pressure. Take a win up there any day and we won ugly in poor conditions but again huge amount of injuries

Winning is becoming a habit but the undesirable habit of players retiring injured every week is continuing unfortunately.

Not has a chance to watch yet.

What were the injuries?

Ghw- finger in eye possibly. Hopefully not too bad
Searle- possibly failed hia?
Rmc- any ideas?

Were all the other subs tactical?

Sounds a horrid game but agree that winning is a habit and an away win in nasty weather with 20+ players missing is encouraging.

No idea what alot of the injuries are but a while ago it was mentioned that w spencer, coetzee, williams, tdg should be back in November.

Think they said Bailey would be out for c3 weeks after sarries so could be in mix- could really do with him as an option

Nice to hear green had a decent game.

Agree Gallagher has been great and tdg will need to prove he deserves the shirt back.

Lee- Warner has had a great impact. Hoping conversations are going on to try and get him to stay beyond end of season. I think he is a better option than several back 5 forwards we have.

Winning whilst playing poorly isn’t something Bath have been able to do for about 5 years so maybe things are finally moving in the right direction.

Lee Warner is some player, best on the pitch by a country mile.

I was at the game, just to pick up on a few points, yes it was a dour game on a grey day, like the shirts, brightened up by the win and the fantastic support from Will Muirs fan club from Guisborough RFC who once again turned up in the blue black and white. I think their juniors were playing at half time. As a Bath fan really appreciated their support to add to the few of us scattered around the ground. The players appreciated it as well at the end. GHW was on crutches at the end, RMc was limping and OR seemed to be limping. He got hurt in the game, was strapped up and carried on but hope he's OK for Friday. Agree LFW was outstanding alongside him and MG played well and I'm very impressed by AC, also JB could do a good job as a winger, we might need him! Newcastle are really struggling to attract fans, only 4000 and they were quiet. Not many stayed around after the game and their excellent clubhouse in the east stand was pretty empty, those there very downbeat especially because they were beaten by a team who didn't play well. Not good for the future of them and the league.

Interview with JvG said that RMc has hamstring issue with scan on Monday to assess and I think it was said that GHW was on crutches! Searle was a HIA

Green's kicking was very good, but his service was iffy and he gave away an absolutely brainless penalty early that led to their try. Hopefully just rust.

I thought some of the decisions were odd too- but IMHO it was the TMO at fault. He could be heard calling "Grey, grey, grey: elbow on floor" for instance when Morazov's elbow hit the deck as he was pulled down by his opponent.

Bath did not help themselves though. Both Newcastle scores were down to stupid infringement - as hasta pointed out. Green played his opposite number without the ball, giving Falcons the chance to kick into Bath's half and set up for their first try.

At the death the forwards time wasting on the way to the lineout was rightly called out and an attacking lineout consequently surrendered for a Newcastle kick - leading to Gallagher's obstruction & 3 more points for the home team.

Yes, excellent point PG about the 78th minute time wasting, total lack of respect towards Hamish Smales, we all know him as a regular assistant referee and maybe Bath simply ignored his instructions which were clearly heard by me in the east stand, thinking he would do nothing. But it was an expensive error because 30 seconds later Newcastle earned a losing bonus point that they would not have been unable to if Bath had successfully executed the throw in.

I agree PG and Francis and you would think players would learn after the disastrous time wasting free kick call against Australia vs the All Blacks that cost them the game

It was a totally unnecessary and brainless thing. The forwards were nowhere close to being in the line in time. Only had to win the lineout and retain the ball for a few phases and whistle over

Having said that, there was so much that was good in winning the game so just put it in the mix for debrief on Monday

Gallagher was warned for taking too long on the kick to touch directly before the forwards ambled to the lineout as well

I was at the game, just to pick up on a few points, yes it was a dour game on a grey day, like the shirts, brightened up by the win and the fantastic support from Will Muirs fan club from Guisborough RFC who once again turned up in the blue black and white. Defence is starting to come together, the most pleasing aspect of it all is that we as someone else stated are showing some "DOG" which has been missing for several seasons.

Injuries are a concern, and we just cannot seem to buy a break but that is the way it is unfortunately I keep thinking we will catch a break soon, but the injury curse appears to be well set in but hopefully we will start getting players back soon and the injuries picked up on Saturday are not too serious albeit RmC was potentially a hamstring! Just what we don't need - would like to see young Shillcock get a run out on Friday night - he is a player I was always impressed with at Warriors and think could do really well at Bath potentially long term.

As for the performance - the weather was atrocious - Falcons are very abrasive particularly at Kingston Park and I cannot think of many teams who go up there and play fancy free flowing rugby and Win. You have to front up and yes, it is very much a thing of attrition - but I can see why JVG was really pleased with that win more the type of win rather than the actual performance. Have to say I was impressed with Billy Searle another who I believe is seriously under rated.

Well thanks to the ingenuity of our Comms Department they managed to stretch it to just over 4 mins!

Good point Bath Hammer. In future I'll give up trying to convert names into initials, it took me longer to work out Fergus Lee- Warner's initials then just typing his name and then I got it wrong!
