HONOUR THE HEROES! BATH v TOULON
Gallagher: heroics
By PG Tips
January 10 2023
Bath will be aiming for their first European win in three years to honour past heroes on Saturday. Twenty- Five years since they edged Brive to become the first British Heineken Cup winners, the heroes of Bordeaux will be at the Rec to receive the plaudits of supporters and, hopefully, inspire today’s team to an overdue victory. Bath’s recent European record is woeful at both levels, but what better spur for the squad than to show a previous victorious generation what this one is capable of?
Since those trailblazing days Bath’s fortunes have been patchy to say the least, with one Challenge Cup victory from three finals the only trophy. A bright period under Mike Ford from 2013-15 and a brief flaring of optimism for Todd Blackadder’s side in 2017 seem distant memories now, although Bath did beat Toulon on their last visit to the Rec, in 2018. Can they repeat the trick this weekend?
Like most French clubs, Toulon have a deep squad packed with experience. They boast 16 internationals in the forwards alone, and with a choice of Biggar or West for directive control from standoff will be sure to come with a pressurising gameplan. The last meeting between the sides was a familiar tale: Bath outpowered up front were on the back foot from the outset, French forward power paving the way for four tries by their backs. Danger men in the forwards should be hooker Tolofua, lock Tanguy and a mouth watering choice of loose forwards from recent France Captain Ollivon, former Italy icon Parisse, Cornell du Preez of South Africa or Puma Facundo Isa. Backs to beware are Scrum half Serin, Fly halves Biggar & West, France U20 centre Sinzelle and wings Kolbe and Villiere.
The Bath team is likely to be based around the selection that beat Newcastle on a wet New Year’s eve, with some variation for rotation or injury returns. Interest will focus on Dunn and whether he has passed his HIA, Reid who appeared to injure a shoulder against Falcons and the possible return of Redpath. Jaco Coetzee should be approaching fitness and may be a bench candidate and there could even be a place for short- term signing Millar-Mills to reinforce the front row. Spare a thought for Wesley White, who may be excused duty as his father Jake has recently undergone emergency surgery.
Against Falcons there was ample evidence of Bath’s defence getting stronger, both in resisting lineout drives and mauls and in midfield. Saturday’s test will require a further tightening. Persistent rain during the week and blustery winds in the afternoon will call for back three heroics under the high ball, so Gallagher should get the nod to lead the effort from fullback.
French clubs do not always travel well and some prefer to prioritise domestic competition. A mid table side this year, the visitors will be smarting from last week’s defeat against stragglers Brive. How they react psychologically could be the key to the level of challenge Bath face. Bath themselves must use the presence of past masters Robinson, Nicol, Lyle, Guscott, Callard et al as inspiration, not comparison. Old glories are just that. Johann van Graan wants to build a high performing squad and a legacy. That means making new glories. The real relevance of yesteryear’s heroes is for today’s men to make them proud. Victory against Toulon would be a good start.
Possible Teams:
Bath: Morozov, Annett, Rae, Lee-Warner, Attwood, Hill, Underhill, Bayliss. Spencer (Capt.), Bailey. McConnochie, Ojomoh, Lawrence, Cokanasiga. Gallagher.
Replacements: Boyce, Doughty, Jonker, Spencer, Coetzee. Schreuder, Redpath, Joseph.

Seems from Pics after the game Reid was fine so he deserves to keep his spot. (Plus as the 6-2 seems favoured now think either him or RDC will be there)
Agree on the high ball tactics so think the TDG at wing experiment will be continued which I’m a big fan of as his play making has been missed imo.

Let's see an exciting game to set the Rec alight for 2023!!
Just hope the performance lives up to that intent

Dead game for Bath so hopefully we’ll play some entertaining rugby.
I wouldn’t say it’s a dead game, win this game and we still have a chance at qualifying no ?

No, we’d still have to beat Glasgow 1st team and given we couldn’t beat their 2nd/3rd team it won’t happen. Might as well use the Toulon game as a training exercise for future games that mean something. Also play some entertaining rugby might be nice.

Unfortunately don’t think playing ‘entertaining’ rugby is going to help us develop anymore. A win over Toulon would massively help the momentum of the team and I don’t see why we couldn’t give Glasgow a good game with the way we have been. Also there is a high chance that one win and losing bonus in the other would be enough to get us through. 5 teams in our group haven’t one a game.

It’s far from dead. Life support maybe, but not dead.
Let’s see where we are at 5 on Saturday. By then we will know if it’s dead or not.
Would be great knowing get something at Scotstoun and we are through.
Got to focus on Toulon first. Got to lock horns with that pack and turn up. Also, winning some line outs would be great.
Anyone know if Toulon are bringing their brass band? Always good craic.

This weekend will give a good assessment at whether we are 'tough to beat' but also whether we can win when conditions are tough.
Evidence so far is that at the hint of rain we lose all ability to catch the ball so resigned to there being a lot of scrums in this game...

Certainly hope there aren't a lot of scrums, Toulon destroyed us in that department in the away game. Not many lineouts would also be quite good.

Last weeks Glasgow team that beat last years South African league winners had a few of these 2nds and 3rds as you say playing from the start. I think we win this and can go to Glasgow with nothing to lose and much to gain
If we could ease a few guys back into action/get gametime into recent returnees, plus get no new serious injuries that would be great as the cavalry due back over next few weeks.
Let's hope a win isn't too much to hope for, we should be able to field a decent 23 so no real excuses, esp if weather isn't awful

Currently no change to Challenge Cup fixture against Toulon
The club is monitoring overnight rainfall and river levels, and in particular their impact on the riverside footpath
Currently there is no change to the EPCR Challenge Cup fixture against Toulon at 15:15 on Saturday
The club will communicate with supporters by 10:00 on Saturday
Bath Rugby is monitoring the water level of the River Avon ahead of Saturday’s EPCR Challenge Cup match against Toulon.
Due to heavy and persistent rainfall over recent days, the Avon has exceeded its bank-full capacity with water flowing onto parts of the riverside footpath adjacent to The Rec.
The river level is currently falling following an extended period without rainfall. However, further rainfall is forecast overnight.
The safety of supporters attending The Rec is paramount. The club is monitoring overnight rainfall and river levels to ascertain if the water level of the Avon may impact access to The Rec on the riverside.
The club will communicate with supporters by 10:00 on Saturday morning confirming if there is any impact on access arrangements for the game, and providing full details at that time. At the current time there is no change to the fixture.
Please refrain from contacting Supporter Services at this time.
Quote:OutsideBath
Seem to remember a Friday night game in 2013 or 2014? where the river had significantly overflowed and the police cordoned off the river path. Didn’t affect access to the ground much and the game went ahead as planned.
I think that was the game when Michael Lipman almost drowned in the bomb hole.

The club is due to host Toulon in the EPCR Challenge Cup at 15:15.
The referee and club safety officer are currently inspecting the pitch and surrounding areas of The Rec.
Due to heavy and persistent rainfall over recent days, the River Avon has exceeded its bank-full capacity.
The water level reduced on Friday, however there was further significant rainfall overnight and the river level is currently rising alongside a high ground water level.
The club will communicate further detail and a decision about the match as soon as possible.

A pitch and stadium safety inspection has been carried out by the referee and club safety officer
Heavy and persistent rain is causing the River Avon to overflow adjacent to The Rec, with rising ground water preventing safe supporter access to and from the ground and making the pitch unusable
Today’s match against Toulon is postponed
An announcement about when the game will take place will be communicated as soon as possible
Bath Rugby’s EPCR Challenge Cup match against Toulon on Saturday 14 January has been postponed following a pitch and stadium safety inspection by the referee, club safety officer and officials from both clubs.
Due to heavy and persistent rainfall over recent days, the River Avon has exceeded its bank-full capacity. The water level reduced on Friday, however there was further significant rainfall overnight and the river level is currently rising alongside a high ground water level.
There has been flooding in and around entrances to The Rec and on the key approach routes to the stadium, particularly at the south end of the stadium. There are up to eight inches of standing water in areas of the stadium, meaning it is not safe for supporters to attend.
The pitch has also been deemed unplayable by the referee and club officials from both Bath and Toulon due to standing water at the south end of the field.
For safety reasons, the club is therefore required to postpone today’s match.
Regarding ticketing for the rearranged match, please refrain from contacting Supporter Services. Communication will be shared as soon as possible.
The situation is hugely disappointing. Bath Rugby apologises for any inconvenience caused.
Quote:makeitagem
Probably move it 24 hours.
Could be best of a bad bunch of options . Don't think any more rain due? So depends if that is long enough for river level and water table to drop to make it safe for fans and players
Not normally, it goes without saying, a Leicester fan but to beat Clermont in their own stadium with their fanatical support was impressive. Close score the whole way through. Esp as they have had upheaval in their coaching side. It cross my mind that may be Borthwick and Sinfield had done alot of preparation before they quit, (I am being deliberately naive here), or even a few phone calls? Anyway, hats off to Leicester.
p.s. Sorry about the current uncertainty re. the Toulon match btw. But the flooding was bad in West Wilts yesterday so with even more heavy downpours, not surprised as the volume moves down the Avon.

I think there is still a lot of rain forecast overnight tonigh
I doubt river levels will fall enough to compensate for the 6 hours rain anticipated tonight.
Pitch drainage will be slower because of the water table (and the burst pipe).

With global warming these events are to be more common so might this have an impact on planning or is that already accounted for?

It will be accounted for. The EIA process will include an Environmental Statement with a chapter on hydrology and hydrogeology. The Recreation Ground falls within Zone 3 of the Environment Agency Flood Zone Map, with part designated as Zone 3b 'functional floodplain'.
If you are interested in the specifics then there was a detailed flood risk assessment submitted by Buro Happold with application ref: 15/05237/FUL.
The National Planning Policy Framework para 161 requires that:
161. All plans should apply a sequential, risk-based approach to the location of
development – taking into account all sources of flood risk and the current and future
impacts of climate change – so as to avoid, where possible, flood risk to people and
property.

Think you need to take it up with the weather gods. Our ground is by a river and the club have moved very quickly to put contingency plans in place. It must be easier to move to a dedicated rugby ground than a shared one.

I'm still not happy with telling us we'd get a decision by 10, an update at 9.45 too say they're planning to faff about, and then continuing to faff about until 11. That seems to be 'bath of old' communications. It seemed fairly obvious you'd need an Arc to come to the game in, why not call it off earlier.

The match will be played at Gloucester’s Kingsholm Stadium on Sunday 15 January, kick-off 15:15. Gates will open one hour kick-off.
Season tickets and general admission tickets for the match that was scheduled at The Rec will not be valid for the game at Kingsholm Stadium as it is not possible to map seat positions and tickets between the grounds.

Lots of free parking around CG. Locals won't thank me me, but you'll find these roads anyway.
- Try Denmark Road (and a number of roads off it) - a pretty long road and, depending on where you are able to find a spot, between a 5 and 20 minutes walk.
- Estcourt Road, a dual carriageway with parallel side roads, about a mile long but around 10 minutes away at its closest.
If you're struggling still, plenty of multi-story car parks in the centre about a 20 minutes walk.
Hare Lane carpark is a pay and display open carpark near the cathedral, about a 5 minutes walk to CG.
Good luck tomorrow.

Of course not OB why on earth do you say that? My thought was that if planning consent was to be granted then flooding of the ground for safety reasons might be an issue. This was answered my BathMatt53 above. As part of that comment CC mentioned that the plans involved moving the ground away from the river by 25m. My question was lateral movement would make little difference. Vertical movement would be different altogether but ground/stand height has been a huge bone of contention in previous discussions.
Winning a legal battle over objections is one thing, defeating nature and global warming could have been more difficult.

The Rec, depending on pitch type, would rely on natural drainage wouldn't it? There will always be building solutions but its simply a point that it might be an issue that might affect Rec development.

Because it has never flooded in Bath before...

Not going there, someone else can cdebate that but it is a widely held help scientific opinion that extreme weather events, flooding, drought, extreme cold events, storms will increase in frequency as a result of the increase in global temperature. Unless you deny the existence of "global warming" of course.

I am sure building a Severn Barage beyond Avonmouth is well within Bruce's budget for the stadium SW! ;-)
Several have been proposed for the Severn Estuary actually BB. Most recently 2011 so I'm not sure Bruce will have to fork out for it.

The only way to stop the ground water getting through to the pitch is to put the pitch in some sort of water tight box but BR said that this wouldn’t be possible because even if the box was made of concrete the whole box would float on the ground and water. I assume being at the bottom of a river valley it would be too expensive to fasten suggested box to the bed rock.

Er I'm not, I'm just saying I'm not happy (I assume you'll permit me to be unhappy with the move?) and I can't see why we don't play at Bristol.
You've straightened that out for me so thanks for that and now I'll decide tomorrow if I want to go.
Sometimes, my tablet just assumes that several return hits are an error, and redacts them.

Not sure how being 25m further away from the Avon is going to help this mind.
I can understand why it took so long to make and ratify the decision to postpone now. It really was touch and go !

Sumps and pumps are a pretty well tried solution to the problem.
As far as I’m aware there is already a sump and pump in the very position of the bad flooding at the Rec
Reid to start and eillis on to bench.
Thought they may have been tempted to give coetzee some minutes but I think last time he played on the kingsholm surface he did his ankle and was out for 3m. Feels like he could injure himself on a marshmallow pitch tbf since he joined us poor chap

What about Merigan, is he still on loan somewhere? With Bayliss, Chippy and now Reid all playing ahead of him and all being flankers, I can't see him being retained.
22 in a few months. Gut feeling is that many at the club aren't sold on him and his 1 year deal was giving him a season to prove them wrong.
Not sure on the v limited opps he has had he has done that. Feel for these guys who don't get much game time.
Saying that he is one of v few specialists 8s we have so who knows...

And I must say, in attack, I'm not sure what we're trying to achieve. 2 or 3 set phases before it all breaks down, the pace of ball falls off a cliff, and we're relying on magic from Lawrence or JCok to put us on the front foot.
We've actually had quite a bit of ball and the penalty count is in our favour – we're just unable to do anything with it... although we might have just scored a good try, TMO check pending!

Our structured attack isn't causing them any problems, whilst there's is pushing us back (but still required an unstructured moment to actually break us).
It feels like we should be more than 7 points down, and given our second halves - we've a decent chance of pulling a result out here.

ETA, and, of course. Bailey's kicking technique is going through a rebuild phase at the moment, and his percentages aren't great.

Dry conditions, plastic pitch, very strong team on paper... we were awful. How hugely disappointing, and the try we gifted them at the end summed up a performance littered with no little effort but a mountain of inaccuracy and stupidity.
Bailey really needs to be removed as our kicker.

According to the radio commentary no contact with another player was involved, he fell over and banged his head on the ground!

CORRECTION
Just checked the video back, from an overthrown lineout Underhill is chasing down a bouncing ball and collided with a Toulon player also reaching for the ball, Sam goes over the top of the other player and lands on his head/shoulder.
Hopefully he is OK.

If the Rec is to continue being a designated flood plane then surely the pitch cannot be raised.
Could bring a new meaning to the term 'drifting defence' ?
Or flooding into the breakdown.

"We are getting so much better, we are creating opportunities and put them under huge pressure“
"I thought we played brilliantly, the try off the kick was class - so many positives“
He must have low standards if he really believes those comments.
Yes, OB, I read those comments and thought I must’ve tuned into the wrong match. JvG and I clearly weren’t watching the same one this afternoon. The try off the kick off had one of the few moments of class from a player in blue with Redpath’s delayed pass, but it then involved a significant amount of luck. Hope JvG is just looking to instil confidence in a group who, despite the new players and some half decent results a few months ago, still look completely bereft of it.
The forwards showed a bit more grunt and guile, but the essence of our back play is to ship the ball to the unquestionably brilliant Ollie Lawrence or Joe Cockanasiga and hope they can work their magic. Even that is on the assumption Ben Spencer or Orlando Bailey can string a decent pass together between them.
And the final five minutes: they took the points to bring us within five, but surely the killer instinct would’ve been to roll the maul over from a lineout, then look to find three points in the dying seconds? Instead, we end up on our own line and PF dinks it straight into an opponent’s arms for the no-score then score. All so very village.

I haven't seen the game but have noted a few comments about Bailey's kicking. I presume this is off the tee. Did I read somewhere that he is being coached? By the time you are in your early 20s it is too late to re model a kicking action IMO, a bit of tinkering maybe but that's it. It sounds as though he has gone backwards in success rate - or am I being unfair because these were difficult chances?

Bailey’s kicking from the tee was appalling BB, he missed one sitter, one kick from around the 10m line didn’t even reach the posts and in total he cost us 8pts.
However we lost because we are a really poor side that has regressed as the season has gone on.

I feel really concerned for Underhill. I remember Lippy and the sad consequences of his style of play, which of course we weren’t aware of the fall out back then. Sam has many of Lipman’s playing DNA but is in an era of increased understanding of repeated head traumas. The bravest decision Sam could make is to retire before it’s too late.
I think it was more likely a shoulder injury, but let's see. He looked particularly down on the bench at the end.
Morozov had a decent game, very strong in the scrum, more footwork on the carry than I'd seen from him before, one knock-on aside, a really good showing. Ted Hill another good showing, he's a great athlete as looked really quick chasing the kick for his try today as well as making hard yards.
Bailey had a game to forget, poor kicking, some wrong decisions (two occasions we lost the game of patience in the kicking battle, took the ball in and then promptly gave away a penalty on the halfway line). One horrible pass to Oli Lawrence that got him melted by two or three Toulon players.
Too many basic errors though, poor line out drills (our maul isn't what it was) and, as said above, attack lacking a spark - especially when two or three phases in.

I think we are a poor side, not a really poor side, and I think we’ve stood still as opposed to regressed. Sounds pedantic, but there are glimmers of hope.
Quote:Ok thanks. Whilst we can tot up the points not taken by his kicking we should not forget the impact that has on the rest of the team whose hard work provides those opportunities. It all leads to lost confidence and draining of effort. I am not blaming OB or trying to put pressure on him, if the club are re working his kicking action they need to take stock of whether this has been a success, or not. Some kicks will be missed, fact of life, but it sounds as though we need to take stock of this if there is some re modelling going on.OutsideBathQuote:B4thB4ck

Completely agree, Callard's arrival has coincided with Bailey's drop in percentages. Problem is that he is the only 10 we have given that Piers Francis is a 12/10 and Worboys isn't ready where do we go? He has just lost confidence and that seems to be affecting his all round game. We have to note that it's Gallagher that is regularly nailing the penalties to touch.
We just have to fudge now till the end of the season I guess.

Nothing that Finn won't put right. Watched him today. If he was playing for us at Kingsholm, which I also watch up there, it would imo have been a positive result for us.
You think our players who can barely catch and pass a rugby ball competently will be able to live with Finn Russell?

When OB was a youngster he was thought to be outstanding & a future international. There was constant pressure from supporters to play him & Hooper did so quite early on. He had the look of a quality player but the sheen has gone off it seems. Clearly the JC tuition is a disaster & needs to be terminated. That won’t have helped his confidence but the rest of his game looks fairly mediocre. It now seems questionable whether he will make it at this level which is sad.
I think he will be fine- he has all the ability he needs.
Lots for a young lad to deal with- frontline 10 for a team who have always been struggling massjvely, goalkicking has been messed up for the time being by coaching and someone is coming in who will relegate him to second choice.
I expect its all scrambled his head a little and tucking in behind finn and learning off him for a few years probably what he needs.

This aligns with my views.
We have gone from a really poor team to a poor team.
For me the key is we now have some building blocks and hope now.
We are in most games and generally have 6 or 7 players each game who go well. Sounded like yest it was morozov, flw, reid, hill, lawrence, coko, gallagher.
Elements of our play like defence have definitely improved and recruitment/retention gives me hope things will keep improving.
We need to rid ourselves of this inability to back up good play with no errors and the tendency to back up bad play with errors. Kills us game after game and infuriating when it's just basic handling like it so often is
Thought we were going to be a hard team to beat, well that hasn’t worked out.
Our ball skills are embarrassing and Finn Russell isn’t going to improve this as his team mates can’t catch the ball. Unless of course he’s doubling up as skills coach.
We were all excited about the attack coach, but again that hasn’t worked out and all we do is bash away at the defence until the ball is knocked on. No sign of space that other teams find with ease.
Our lineout is sketchy at best, we have no driving maul from a lineout and can’t stop one. Case in point was yesterday after less than a minute, Toulon catch a lineout and run over our defence.
No point going for 3 point penalties as they are invariably missed.
The most disappointing thing from yesterday though was JvG thinking we played well!
Anyway rant over and onwards to our next defeat.
Terrible ball skills i.e. the basics of catching and accurate passing, have been a recurring theme for years and that (along with consistently not having a functioning lineout) are the two main elements that infuriate me.
Toulon are a good team tbf with some v v good players so was never going to be an easy game.
I think we have to hope that the current coaches have the ability to keep improving us and speed that process up as it gets dull being a bath and saints fc fan (was amazing to see saints actually win some games this week!)
Quote:I remember from other players, both here and elsewhere, that when they start with a specialist kicking coach, they tend to have their technique deconstructed, and then rebuilt as desired, and that this often comes with a loss (sometimes dramatic loss) of kicking form.shipwrecked

Personally, I'd hand the kicking tee to someone else during that phase of loss of form with the boot, because it can then lead to loss of form elsewhere in that player's game, and in the rest of the team's morale.
If only we had another kicker skilled enough to be front-line for a bit.
Someone like Spencer, or Redpath, for example.
I appreciate that doing so will slow-down the rebuilding phase of the new technique, meaning that there's no good answer, just several poor ones; but... it's got to be worth a try.

Speaking to my colleague in the office this morning who went to the game he was much more upbeat than the messages above.
A friend of mine went and said that although frustrating he was relatively upbeat about the future and felt we played ok
I was there and I agree.
Sure, we shot ourselves in the foot at the beginning and end, but there was a lot of ambition and 3 good tries. We also had the better of Toulon in the scrum in the second half.
Lineout needs fixing though.
PG
It was small fixable mistakes, that will improve with more time an confidence, that cost us.
The main difference between the sides was the ability of their back to find space for each other when our default still appears to be to try and blast holes.
That comment above could probably apply to almost all English teams including the England national side when comparing them to their French opposition.
I wasn't convinced that Fin R was the best use of the marquee slot for us until yesterday. I think his skill and approach could be transformative for us. It will also change the reliance on Ben Spencer and his need to run the game. FR will be demanding quick ball all week in training as well as match day.
I am always an optimist but now think I have reason to be.

Watching at home, to me it looked like poor timing - the lift was too late and the ball had flown over the jumper, rather than going for a 15m+ throw - there was no one there to receive it, hence the easy gather and score for Toulon!

That last play summed up everything we did yesterday. Toulon we’re there for the taking, but we were largely inept when it mattered and pretty much gifted Toulon the victory. Really hard to come up with any positives whilst sitting in the stand.
IMHO we should have kept it simple, banker front ball and clear our lines - accept and leave with at least a point - but I will not criticise any team for ambition - I personally think the improvements in our team this season have been better than we could have hoped considering where we were at the end of last season.
The attack/defence is not going to just spring into action it will take time and in places a change of personnel - all I would say to all is just remember what a shambles we were and what JVG and his team walked into - a total re-build and to reinvigorate a completely shot squad - to make them believe and enjoy the game once more - and I believe he is well and truly on the right path.
Have to say utterly fed up with the negative and undermining comments on here.
Call yourselves Bath Supporters = I don't think so. Criticisms, singling out individuals mistakes, etc. etc. "Should have", "could have", etc. etc.
However, that said, it is disappointing that we seem to be getting nowhere fast for all the changes of coaching staff since last summer. perhaps there are too many indians and not enough chief. Bit more autocracy in the War Room planning might help?
