Ojomoh: injury doubt?
By Devonport Lad
April 21 2026
In JvG we trust, reads the banner often seen proudly displayed by Bath supporters both at home and away games. And yes, we do, but the next couple of games are arguably season defining. As JvG and his team finalise their preparations for huge challenges in the Prem and in Europe, the thoughts of another South African, Nelson Mandela, who also understood a bit about hard decisions seem to strike a chord.
The choices facing JvG over the next couple of weeks are particularly difficult. Saints at the Gardens followed by Bordeaux away are probably the biggest challenges to any team either in the Prem or in the Champions Cup. Get it right over those games and we’re well on the way to a glorious finish to the season. But get it wrong and the outsize pachyderm in the room which says that we could fall short in both competitions becomes increasingly difficult to ignore.
I suppose you could argue that whilst the Champions Cup semi-final is an all or nothing game, and with 25 points still available in the Prem a loss against Saints on Saturday might not be terminal to our playoff ambitions. However, it’s still tight at the top with five or possibly six teams in with a shout and speaking personally, I’d rather not go into the final game of the season against Leicester having to win to secure a playoff place. Since it's the "alligator closest to the canoe", how do we look going into the Northampton game?
Saints are undeniably in good shape. They secured a very impressive win at Sandy Park against an Exeter side who have been on an upward trajectory as the season progresses. It's never easy at Exeter and we've got to go there in a few weeks. Saints' determination to go the full distance and grab the win in the 80th minute speaks volumes about their mindset now and of course thanks to our win over them in the Champions Cup quarter final, they can now focus exclusively on winning the Prem.
Our match against an injury ravaged Quins wasn’t quite at the level of intensity of our previous couple of games but that might work to our advantage. Parking concerns about possible injuries to Ollie Lawrence and Max Ojomoh for the moment, there were positives to take from that game in terms of how we cope in the absence of key leaders on the pitch. Ben Spencer's captaincy is superb but Charlie Ewels, an experienced captain in his own right, ably stepped up to the plate in his absence and Tom Carr-Smith and the increasingly impressive Bernard Van der Linde, were more than capable scrum halves. There were standout performances from the "usual suspects" and Joe Cokanasiga seems to be reaching new levels in his game, consistently winning balls in the air and throwing his considerable physique about in defence.
However, it was Santi Carreras who really caught the eye. On a day when Finn Russell wasn't quite "on it" in terms of his normal talismanic standards, Santi looked as if he'd suddenly become unshackled. Starting at 15 and then moving to 10, arguably for the first time in blue black and white he looked like the player who delivers truly international class performances for Argentina and that is hugely reassuring for our strength in depth as we chase the dream on two fronts.
We know how highly JvG regards the Champions Cup and I don't think there is any doubt that he will wish to field the "gun" team in Bordeaux, so that puts the emphasis back on selection for Saints. Last season our points difference over our nearest rivals for a Prem playoff spot was so great that we had the luxury of sending effectively a Prem Cup squad to Cardiff to take on Bristol, but it's different this year and it's reasonable to think that in our quest for a Prem playoff we need to get something out of our visit to Northampton, who will themselves be looking for a home win to put some blue water between us and them. There is also the question of ensuring that we don't go to Bordeaux "undercooked" whilst seeking to avoid injuries in critical positions, particularly the front row. A difficult balance!
So will JvG rotate heavily for Northampton and look to the "purples" to take on the current Prem leaders or will he take more of a business-as-usual approach, keeping the changes to more or less those that we would expect to see week to week? Many of us would expect the former but I've got a feeling it might be more of the latter. I can't call it and I'll leave it to others to try to pick the squad!
That said, whichever squad is selected, we can be sure the choices will have been made based on hope rather than fear.

Other than maybe one TCS or BvdL I'd be surprised if anyone is making the trip this week that is being lined up for the 23 in France. Hopefully the team we send can give a good account of themselves and will be a useful for one or two players to see how they're shaping up against strong opppositon.
Saints can blow almost anyone away on their day but they haven't been very good defensively the last few weeks so no reason to think a losing bonus point is out of reach
p.s. Great preview DL.

Having said that, I'm confident that a back line including the likes of Muir, Hennessy, Butt, BVDL etc will compete, make things happen, score c4 tries, but I'm worried that if we don't send a 1st-ish XV front five, the game could get away from us. Saints' scrum has been good, so Kirk Frost Griffin Jeanes Richards could get bossed, allowing Saints all the momentum at home, and the back line pick would become irrelevant.
But having said that, with Stuart out and Beno and Roux struggling with knocks, we can't afford for TDT or VW or Ewels to go down too ahead of what will be a mammoth set piece test in SW France. Sooo, in conclusion, #InJvGWeTrust.
I wonder if it would be a lot for Donoghue to come straight in to start at 10 after months out with big injury. I'd like to see Arthur Green get a start to rest Reid and think maybe Tuipolotu will start this one for experience. Think its a game to start Van der Linde against Mitchell or McPharland as both quick and he's attacking.

I would send a 2nd/3rd "PREM Cup 24/25" squad, with our 25/26 Cup Final XV in the spa at Farleigh.
+1
Personally the PL means more to me, but as we’ll probably never have a better chance of winning the CC might as well rest all players going to be involved at BB.

Pretty much this. Pick your battles. Injuries are starting to bite so we simply must rotate and hope that a young tight 5 can do us proud. BVDL would be my 21 in Bordeaux though.
Very difficult to challenge on 2 fronts and we have an opportunity to do something no English team has done since 2020. Mammoth test but a one-off game, unlike Saints away.
PS another +1 for the write up. Thanks to you (and all other contributors) for the effort you put into them
A try bonus point should be well within a second choice 15 with a few first choices ready on the bench if needed
A LBP not inconceivable either
But worst case scenario has to be to go very strong and not win and pick up a couple of injuries/hia
Semi-finals - in my view - should be regarded as a successful season - so, IMO, this season is already an 8/10. Reaching at least one final = 9/10; Winning at least one cup = 10/10. Winning both ... turn the volume up to 11!!
0 or 1 point from the Saints game isn't going to make the difference.
Saints beating Exeter last weekend make it easier for us to come 2nd.
If they also do the job away to Tigers, even better.
The added bonus of having 2 diferent starting 15s is the teams can train together.
I would go as far as completely different 23s though.
We may have 30-38 PREM quality players fit, not so sure it stretches to 46!

Last season, exemplified by our selection for Treviso (but I think that was JVG rotating rather than prioritising, although they're the same thing I know), I was fully supportive of our focus on the more achievable goal of winning the league. But this year, with TDT leaving and Finn at his peak, I'm glad we're going all out for the Euro Cup.
To be honest, if we go down in a blaze of glory to better teams on both fronts, I'll be happy.

Absolutely this, We have to give the CC priority this week. This time last year Saints picked strong teams prior to the semi and final, I presume for continuity and the knowledge they were not going to make top 4.

Winning both the Prem and the Champions Cup does feel like a bit of a Mission Impossible, but I'd rather we fell short trying to do that - rather than prioritising one competition or the other.

Hmm, that's probably where I was at start of season but given current context I'm seeing it slightly differently
Assuming low, insignificant impact of injuries from here then we really should make Prem final
Not getting there means we either fell short of 2nd spot or lost a home semi. Either scenario are very possible but would leave me feeling disappointed and sense of underachievement
Reaching semi in big euro cup is, no doubt, very impressive tho but doesn't change my thinking about where we should get to in the Prem

The Doc is reading my mind today.
We won't know how we go without TdT next season, but we know how good we are with him this season, so let's try and make history while he's still ours!
Was reminded by comms in Bordeaux's QF how desperate they were to sign TdT, so will be very wary of him. That and Finn Russell in the form of his life, twinned with all our other threats make it feel like a now or never in Europe.
If we have to sacrifice a few points in the PREM in order to try and win the big Cup so be it.
I still think the Euro QF was the pivot point. Losing to Saints would have triggered a very different scenario. I feel now that win or lose the next two games, we can be upbeat all the way to the PREM final.

Langdon and Ramm definitely out
Pearson and Coles probably out
Plus Davison and Todaro who are confirmed out for the season
Fischetti, Green and Hutchinson available having been rested versus Exeter.
So I'm guessing they are going to go something like:
Fischetti, Smith, Kundiona
JJvdM, Lockett
Kemeney, Chick, Pollock
Mitchell, Smith
Dingwall, Hutchinson
Freeman, Furbank, Hendy
Wright, Iyogun, Millar-Mills, Prowse, Graham, MacParland, Belleau, Litchfield

Lawrence doesn't sound too bad
Ojomoh a bit more vague, but potentially might be back for Bordeaux
Spencer sounded like a very precautionary withdrawal
Positive noises regarding Obano and Roux
As we've speculated, none of the above will be involved this week

Indeed and no Sam Winters in that team either if he is not injured that team could be devoid of senior players.

Don't think this will be far off.
Hopefully good enough to get a BP - more likely a try scoring one in an open , high scoring game.
Exciting opp for lots of players.
The games against Bristol, Exeter and Leicester are more significant to achieving that so I would back a changed side against Saints, like most on here.
It’ll be a rotation side this week for sure, someone mentioned the psychological factor of denying Saints a win against our top 23 which I don’t disagree with.
A bonus point or two will be key, but given we still have Chiefs and Tigers to play it’s in our own hands to guarantee top two.
Would love to be back at HQ for the final, but also agree that competing on two fronts is difficult for the squad and prioritising the CC isn’t daft given the make up of our squad. That being said, the top teams often need a season or two of semi or final losses to learn what it takes to win the CC so maybe we’re hoping for too much?
Too many questions, as ever I know JvG will have the answers!

I hope the appropriate protocols are in place if he collides with van der Mescht
Another important factor is red bulls investment in Newcastle.
In effect means you will have 18 extremely tough prem fixtures where there is jeopardy in selection.
May make the task alter from near impossible to impossible in terms of fighting on 2 fronts
For example bayliss and reid, malony and richards, tcs and bvdl, hennessey and butt.
Even if one is just on the bench.
May be the difference between 0 points and an important 1 or 2 points in the final standings.
Not sure I would risk kepu and frost and definitely not griffin and sela.

I don’t see how Newcastle makes much difference - all 9 teams will have to play them and it’s not like anyone should take them lightly even this season.

If we make the champions cup final I would fully expect us to make lots of changes for newcastle and still win.
That is a huge help when trying to fight on 2 fronts.
In theory - should we fall short this year - we could take some emphasis off the GP and prioritise the CRC, but that's a risky old business.
Quote:Optimist
Although i was firmly of the belief that making a semi-final could be considered Step 1 in a 3-year plan to try and win the Champions Cup, I'm now starting to think that this year is as good a chance as we'll get, especially with the Finn/TdT effect at its zenith. The French club game is in such rude health that they are only going to get stronger, so any edge we get in terms of that experience is going to be met by equal or greater advances elsewhere.
In theory - should we fall short this year - we could take some emphasis off the GP and prioritise the CRC, but that's a risky old business.
This where I am too. Even allowing for losing TdT and Barbeary next year our window to win the Prem is still there. We might well get beaten by a better team next week or in the final if it comes to that but this is the big opportunity for Europe
Saturday has to be a B team for me, rest everyone up for CC. We can easily grab a bonus point or two against Saints.
Flip side, if we send a B team and win (shades of Sale away) then wow, it’s an absolute marker set down to everyone else in the league!
... IMHO, of course.
Now in Honolulu
Funny how a lot of the press around tomorrow's game is still talking it up as the 3rd part in the trilogy, and the game of the season to date etc. I just don't see JvG doing anything other than putting out a 2nd/3rd team, so I don't understand how it's going to be anything but a test for Saints not to step on a reserve team-shaped banana skin (like we did in December at home). Will be a fun game- with the chance for some fringe lads, like Frost, Richards, Staddon, Green, Donoghue, Butt, Hennesssy, to put their hands up- but any points for us and anything other than a dominant Saints win will be a great result for us. (also, see what I'm doing here... ; ) ).
As for next week that in JvG's language is NEXT WEEK start thinking about it on Monday. The cards are stacked against us in the European Cup - we have the huge challenge of playing Bordeaux in Bordeaux such a neutral venue and then if we are successful we travel to Spain for the Final.
Whilst also packing in a hell of a difficult end to the Prem season - I am concerned with travelling etc that it may be a bridge too far but who knows. One thing this season which I am concerned about is how the loss of Will Stuart has affected us - yes a player of his statue and quality would be felt but I just feel and this is not meant to be harsh that Archie Griffin and Billy Sela have struggled, albeit hopefully learned and gained a lot of experience.
Replacements: 16 Kepu Tuipulotu, 17 Francois van Wyk, 18 Archie Griffin, 19 Enoch Opoku-Gyamfu, 20 Ted Hill, 21 Tom Carr-Smith, 22 Sam Winters, 23 Sam Underhill

I understand your frustration Nick. It's hard to travel in the knowledge your team is on paper throwing the towel in. How did the Saints fans in January feel before their trip to the Rec in January but look what happened there. If I had tickets I would still go in the hope of a upset, Sale recently a good example. I used to go to all the away games , I don't now due to mobility issues but I do remember that feeling of being short changed with team selections. Hope you change your mind, it's a big if, but if they won you be witnessing some special.

Do you not recall what their second/third team did to our strong lineup on 28th Dec?
In all, roughly as we all expected.
Saints will look at that team and feel the same way we did, no matter what the coaches say. There is some real talent in that team of ours - I hope they go out and give it a right good go and I am sure they will.

Iyogun is ahead on merit, he's playing very well at the moment and Fischetti hasn't been great since the 6 nations.
Soooo... unless JvG picks the gun XV every week it's a "total waste of money" and not worth watching? Unsure what else JvG should be doing to a) protect his players from being overplayed and b) give us a chance of winning trophies, which I think makes those fans bothering to watch and support and pay money quite happy.
On the other I can totally understand why someone would be a bit disappointed that they have missed out on another 1st team humdinger, have chucked a couple of hundred quid at it and wouldn’t want to spend 6 hours on the motorway to watch it.

That's a very different attitude to "complete waste of money. Tickets in the bin and won't bother to watch on tv"
I have 4 adult tickets which I am happy to pass over as clearly many on here don't think it will be a waste of money, coupled with a 5 hour round trip to watch the Prem Cup team get hosed by Saints. Dr Bath, I have paid my money to watch and support the 1st XV which would have made me happy, this selection does not. Are you going as one of the fans who can be bothered to watch and support and pay money that you refer to in your post?
As others point out, we thought we'd pump Saints in Dec and look what happened. They are undoubtedly big favourites but I'm not pessimistic about our chances...

Well, that's it pretty much though Billy may start and TDT on bench. Cam may play if Max or Ollie out. Reckon Sam at 7. Bench will be the fittest from tomorrow.
I understand your frustration, but (obviously) JvG is only doing this to make the fans (those who travel to away games and those that don't) ecstatic on finals day. If there was no reason, I'd be annoyed. If Saints won the QF, we'd be sending our full XV. But we won- so we're not- and I love that!
Honestly, would anyone really agree that Beno, TDT, Roux, Pepper, Ben, Finn etc should be playing tomorrow? I know I don't have literal skin in the game (i.e. money spent on tickets) but my emotional investment spent supporting this club for 40 years is very pleased they're not. Given the way the fixtures have fallen, I personally don't see an alternative, even if we do end up getting well beat.
Really can’t see any issues with the team selection.

They've got pretty much their full strength 23 but rotated the bench and starters a bit especially in the front row.
It's always an interesting call, rested v game-hardened. Not sure that either approach is definitively right but it feels a lot easier to see it as a mistake if a non knock-out game sees you lose an important player to injury or a ban.
Imagine about 8 will be in the 23 next week.
Fvw
Kepu
Malony or richards
3 of hill/underhill/reid/ bayliss
Bvdl or rcs
1 of hennessey/ butt/ tdg
Shame no redpath, doesn't bode well for mojo ( jvg seemed upbeat about Lawrence's chances of being fit).
Winters clearly highly rated, ahead of emens who played for the uni whilst winters was rested for this.
I defo think it's a squad good enough to get a 4 try BP. If we have a chance at 50-60 mins of a losing BP I imagine the bench will be deployed and there is some serious heft and firepower there.
If we are getting annihilated imagine they may cut there losses and not risk the likes of fvw, kepu, ted and sam for long or at all.
Fascinating, fully expect a heavy defeat but you never know, saints largely second team thrashed our largely firsts at the rec!
Fascinated to see gyamfi and where he plays. Had 8 on his back recently for the uni but packed down at lock apparently. Exciting prospect I think- 22- 23 stone and now in seriously good shape is a real point of difference
I am not sure how fair or sensible it is to throw him in after 8 months out at 10, in a weakened team, away to top of the league.
As has been proved hundreds of times , I am sure jvg knows what he is doing. Just feels a bit unfair on him and we could have won at a canter last week whilst giving him 30 mins at 15.
23 for that I think is a similar strength to today , I would say today's squad is a bit stronger though.

I was disappointed with team selection for the Treviso game last season, although at least we had the consolation that it was a nice place to visit.
I'm fully expecting a comfortable [in the end] Saints win for 5 points but for us I'm hoping for
* try bonus point
* dogged, resolute defence to keep Saints scoring to a minimum
* every player giving it everything right to the end irrespective of the score
* some exhilarating play with invention, strong link up and supporting runners
* evidence of a very exciting half back partnership for the post Finn and Ben era
And probably a score something like 43 - 24 or better
And, just for the record, if that's how it turned out and I had bought tickets then I would becoming away from Franklin a very happy fan
But if not and it turns out a bit of a pasting then I would just congratulate the Saints and shift my focus to the big games ahead
I think we take any positives today, whether that's than a less than 30 point defeat fingers crossed, some good individual performances , plenty of guts against the odds etc

26-14. Near Bath score, Saints go straight down the other end despite Bayliss' best efforts. Dubious hands in the ruck.
? Surely balls popping out of rucks like a jack in the box happen all the time.
Quite. Clearly wasn't picking the ball up, just scoops it back. Bath resist the rest of the half (just about) - 26-14 at HT.
Pillock play acting when blatantly blocking Muir chasing a kick. Another penalty that Pearce failed to give to Bath.
Young porps have held up really well bar one scrum.

Not going to bother travelling to watching this now, the tickets I bought earlier in the season are now in the Bin. Total waste of money, wont even watch on TV.
Officiating gave that to Saints, so many bad decisions in Saints favour, caoped by the joke penalty at the end.
Utter furious with that.

Reid MOTM. 2 points is an absolute result. Great effort.
We shouldn't fear them either
Hennessy, de Glanville, Muir and Reid all outstanding. Reid a warrior. Best game in the shirt from TCS.
Desperately unlucky penalty to lose it but so much to take from that.

Yep
The last penalty - I know we have to do this thing where we wring our hands whenever there is head contact and, blah blah, he could have tackled lower. But, man, it's Rugby. You tackle somebody and their head goes into your arm... I wouldn't even want it to be a free kick but a penalty?
Sounds like a cracking effort from our boys.

In general much better. Just the last one bah.
It was a far too complicated call for the last lineout, but pretty sure Saints 9 knocked on way back in their 22
If we’re being honest though guys, that’s a penalty at the end. It just is. I seem to remember we lost in the last second last year as well to a penalty!
Just a fantastic game, after all the hand wringing about games being runaways and not competitiveness, this was Prem rugby at its absolute best.
Hope we meet them in the final because my goodness it’s a good game when we play!
* TCS best game in a Bath shirt and we needed it with BVDL off early
* Ciaran back and terrifying defences!
* Miles in full-on beast mode from minute one
* Scrum looking solid
* Never say die spirit
* Two bonus points
I thought the same when we lost at the Gardens last year, and the same when we lost the final.
Does anyone else feel like that? Just a case of “man that was so good to watch, the final score is almost irrelevant”.
Or have I had one too many beers?
Still, gutted with the last few minutes. We were attacking in their 22! And we ended up letting them kick a winning pen! And of course it was Pollock!!Aaaach. Goodness they’re good ball in hand but they seem to struggle with our power. Such a great rivalry- despite them getting 3 more points than us this evening, I’d rather be us tonight!
Muir and Hennessy immense. Donoghue, just wow, so assured and the half breaks will become line breaks with sharpness. Presume that was Spencer in a TCS mask- what a game! And every forward was so on it, led by Reid. And the bench, especially Kepu, almost swung it. I’d say Muir and Reid (maaaybe) deserve to start next week after that.
Just love this rugby club. Can only imagine what a huge boost that performance gives the 1st XV as we go into UBB week. Allez Bath!

Saints losing another tighthead and van der Mescht might turn out to be the most significant thing from that game come end of the season. Neither looked like minor issues when they went off
Yeah totally agree, I've actually been pretty impressed with Kundiona in the past few weeks, for a player I knew nothing about he held his own in the scrum when up against Beno and co. With Davison also out for the season Saints could be down to just Green and Millar-Mills for the remaining fixtures, still a decent enough tighthead duo, but fatigue may start to be a factor come the play offs if they can't rest/rotate. I guess they've also got Sonny Tongaʻuiha in the academy, but he didn't exactly pull up trees for the u20s.
From a Bath perspective, I'm praying that BVDL hasn't suffered anything too serious, could really do with his impact off the bench as we head into the business end of the season.
Fabulous performance. Special mention to Donoghue, Muir, Bayliss and DeGlanville but the forwards turned up as well. It was superb to be in amongst the Saints supporters as we went to work.
They knew we had them and they were getting quite stroppy about it. Cracking day out. All thats good about rugby.

You know what I keep coming back to? I don’t mind losing games when they’re as good as that one.

So much potential on show. Donohue had no right to play as well as he did after his lay-off, but a suggestion of genuine class we thought we might have glimpsed last year. Hennessey superb, genuinely versatile.
Then just players to be proud of - often starters like Reid, Muir, TdG who just led by example
That as Mr Mourinho would say, is 'eritage'
Seriously you must be so proud. Your team never gave up, despite some early setbacks.
Some take aways for me.
Bayliss is such an athlete he'd walk in to pretty much every other side, his work rate catching a winger was amazing and the sort of action that lifts a whole team.
Frost showed the sort of form we saw at chiefs at times I thought he was great today
The young half back pairing played with real maturity they both have a very promising future.
Hennessy was outstanding.
Lastly from a player point of view. I've watched over the years how miles reid has gone from someone who I never thought would really make it, to a truly exceptional player, he was everywhere today.
I could watch Bath v Saints games every day. What a great match full of quality. I love watching Saints because as good as they can be, they have real wobbles in games which means you never think the game is over. Despite losing the game I'm sure it's done more for your confidence than it's done for Saints'. I'm pretty sure you'll be doing it again at Twickenham in a few weeks. I just wonder if your greater squad depth and Saints injuries might work in your favour.
These two teams are setting the standards the rest of us have to aim for. Watching this game compared to the earlier game or Fridays game is like watching a different sport! Hopefully if we make the semis we can at least give on of you a game.

A centre on the wing who just loves running around. Hennessy is the reason we can afford toilet Butt go to yourselves. Thing is that many on here're expecting a bit of a schooling from Saints but everyone stepped up.
Thanks for the comments, it's nice to get appreciation of the rugby rather than the usual partisan rhetoric.

I thought TDG, Reid, Horse, Donoghue and TCS were all very very good. Shows your squad depth very well and I think you’ll struggle to balance the books for the next couple seasons (unless Bruce Craig knows the Sarries accountant) so I wish you all the best capitalising on this season and hope you do UBB- you’ve got it in you.
P.S sorry to end on a sour note but that tackle on Pollock at the end was a stonewall pen. I’m sure you’ll have gripes with the ref as we did today but can’t argue that whatsoever
Quote:The Bear
If it's 38-38 you can't take the ref out of the equation. It's frustrating because it was a hell of an effort and we could have won it or iced the draw but it is what it is.

It's a shame it didn't end 38-38, but if either side deserved to edge it, it was Saints. They just look so dangerous every time they have the ball.
You could argue that Saints had a much stronger side out, but let's also not forget that they had a fair few players missing and that wasn't their ideal cup final 23.
If we meet Saints in the play-offs/at HQ we HAVE to stop them getting off to a flier again.

That's easier said than done!! Although, we managed it last week, so Saints decided to finish the game strongly instead!!
The joy of watching Saints is you know they'll have some unplayable moments, but also spells where they can drift out of the game. The key is, as you've shown, is to stay in the fight and you'll get your chances. To be honest I'm looking forward to you playing them again!!

I think a few have misunderstood - It is the rule and I don't blame the TMO for highlighting it and the ref for making the decision. The ref did not rob us. Besides, the moment we lost the lineout the likelihood of defeat increased and yet there was still moments across 79 other minutes where we could have made the margin bigger.
I just think, minute 1 or minute 80, that a penalty for that kind of collision is absurd. Nobody 15 years ago would have ever considered a penalty for something like that. The game's changed but if you give a disproportionate sanction for incidental collisions then there will be times they will be seen to decide games.
Quote:hasta
Set a rule for high tackles and enforce it, that's fine. I'm not bothered about what was done 15 years ago. My irritation is I bet there were 20 other hits (from both teams) that were that marginally high all game and none of them had the TMO come in on it. There was no TMO on the blatant hands in the ruck turnover in the first half. The use of it is so inconsistent.
It is so irritating that some of us are analysing one incident in just the same way Saints fans went on about the Pollock yellow card last time. Rules are rules & we have to play to them. Just because they are not always enforced is neither here nor there.
My MotM - all 23 of them.
... IMHO, of course.

In a few years it’s going to flash down the line from Donoghue to Mojo to Hennessy to Offiah to Arundell who’s come in to the line from FB. And it’ll happen so quickly we will just see a blur 😂
I wonder if this led to the Luke Pearce awarding the final penalty.

Also credit to whoever shot out of the line and chased down Smith on the drop goal attempt, it was a fantastic effort at the end of a game that must have been absolutely lung burstingly difficult
Quote:theredseat
I’m doing my best not to get carried away with Hennessey at the moment. We’ve got some top centres but he could be the best of the lot sooner rather than later.
In a similar way i try to not get carried away about donoghue as 10 is such a hard position and he has played there v little, and generally on the front foot.
To come back after 8 months out at 10 in a weakened team and look the part is hugely impressive.
Having him and santi really is a luxurious place to be.
Get excited about hennessey TRS , really think he is the real deal and have done for a while. Lots of players are big and quick but he has a great natural feel for the game as well, with lovely running lines and soft hands.
I think the Prem really needed yesterday's game because there have been some awfully dull one sided matches recently, it even forced Austin Healey to say a few positive things about us and that is rare indeed!

These player ratings seem harsh given the outcome of the match. Didn't see the game, got snatches on BBC Bristol here in Prague and rated it a 9/10 team performance 💙🖤🤍

I do think Pollock pushed his head into Gyamfi's arm and not the other way round and it shouldn't have been a penalty but with the current laws and the way they are interpreted by all officials it was a penalty.
I do think we've managed to rattle Pollock in the last two matches which is important - If we can repeat in the playoffs then he could be a walking yellow card.
2 points is a brilliant return as it means we only need 15 points to guarantee a home semi (actually less if any of those are gained at Leicester's expense). Leicester can't drop a point now. It's worse for Exeter (14 points required) and Bristol (10 points required).
Quote:Benisjammin
I don't think anyone could blame the referee. He was actually really good at allowing the game to flow fairly - contrast with the horrible stop start second half at the StoneX. The penalty happened because we messed up the last lineout. A try a piece was questionable but they cancel out and the entertainment was enhanced. The referee influences the style of game a little but rarely the actual outcome.

That is quite unbelievable hahaha. Pollock pushed his head into Gyamfi’s arm!! I’ll remember that one for the next TMO dissection of a high shot.
Don’t ruin your team’s great performance and credibility by moaning about as stonewall a penalty as you’ll see.
Also as to rattling Pollock….across both games he has beaten your guys across the floor a number of times, made significant line breaks and a couple try assists. I don’t see any sign of him being ‘rattled’ unless you’re referring to Horse ploughing through him from behind without the ball?…
Equally, Saints did not lose the quarter final because of the questionable decision against Pollock – they lost it because they only scored six points in the second half.
Agree - it was close, but a fair decision! Swap the shirts and we would have been very much agreeing with the penalty.

You aren't alone bath Hammer.
I really enjoy some input from opponents and neutrals but does often descend into nonsense from all angles.
I do feel that it's maybe sensible to expect some level of partisan , one eyed observations on fans forums and take it in stride. As I have said before he isn't my cup of tea at all but he is v v good and drives much needed interest in the game.

If you’re referring to me then please tell me which part of my post was disrespectful? A response to someone saying Pollock threw his head into your players arm to gain a penalty? As mentioned across a couple of posts I don’t come to anyone else board to disrespect them- often to acknowledge good performances. However clearly I am going to call out what I believe to be unfounded or inaccurate takes on my team when discussing on the match thread.
Fwiw, I didn’t think it was a pen on Pollock. Pollock dipped his head into the arm imo, not intentionally - it was part of his movement to gain momentum. Still, great game.
Both teams came away with plenty of merit.
Was wonderful to see 2 English teams playing that way.

Danchincho- I thought it was an excellent game and can’t necessarily say Saints deserved the win but didn’t feel like we deserved a loss either.

Fair play, as I say I really get a lot from opponents and neutral views on here, interesting to hear the opinions of others..... just don't get rattled by it (joke).
Good luck for the rest of the season- as soon as we scraped through the quarters and installed you as firm favourites for the prem and haven't changed my mind. I have a bit of a soft spot after how classy Dowson was in a defeat- possibly out jvg'd jvg!
I also feel entirely reassured that we have the resources to get a home semi and reach the Prem Cup final. Against UBB que sera sera, but winning next week would, in many ways, be less surprising than putting 40 points on Saints yesterday.
Are other fan forums filled with Bath fans post game goading the opposition? I don't get it.
Anyway, what a game. Just incredible to think where we are as a club. So very nearly got a statement with some hugely exciting young guns running the show. Saints (rightly so) get credit for their academy set up but some of the 'old' guard in Reid, Bayliss, TdG and Richards really demonstrating how ours has become the cornerstone of our club.
Won't comment on the penalty but Pollock as a whole needs to reel it in a bit. Will probably come with age but he's in danger of getting a reputation for himself with histrionics again yesterday. Fab player but lacking in grace. Perhaps it's all part of a his new agent's strategy.

My comment was addressed equally at the post to which you responded & your response. Carrying on all this is totally vacuous.
JvG has got everyone at Bath in each of their specific positions almost interchangeable. I know I go on about the University rugby but it applies even down to that level as well.
The fact that JvG attended the University Final at Rodney Parade on Wednesday recognises that he recognises the culture covers senior players, squad members, academy and senior academy scholars.
It's the holistic culture he has instilled across the club that has crystallised a vague 'Bath philosophy' into a long needed identity.

Agree but jeeze I would take it every time over someone like Brendan venter....
The thing I love is it's all by design.
We have repeatedly trusted the squad in a way others haven't and we are reaping the benefits.
If you play all your frontline guys in the prem Cup for example it's hard to sympathise when players aren't ready to step up in the event of injury etc.
Interesting how JVG sounds a bit miffed that people are referring to a Bath ‘second team’ - he prefers to just refer to the squad as a whole (and I can understand that, particularly in relation to the likes of Bayliss, Reid and TDG).

You could drop most of those guys from yest into a clutch game and the drop off would be minimal / non existent .
Obviously you would always miss a tdt or finn/spencer.

Yes, of course. Simply the 6 point gap we have over Leicester now rather than the 5 points we had before, or maybe expected to have, is significant. It means we can lose a game and still be a point ahead even if Leicester win all their remaining fixtures.

If you read my whole post you would see that I didn't disagree that it was a penalty under the current rules and also that I thought the referee was good and fair all game.
In my opinion (and it is only my opinion and nothing more) I thought Pollock intelligently used his head to win a penalty. My observation on him being a bit rattled is based on the way he seemed to be very performative in his work around the ruck whilst not listening to the referee as often as he normally would in both matches against us. It is usually Pollock's opposition that get wound up (see UBB last year for example) but yesterday he seemed a bit on edge (again my opinion only). Maybe Reid's marking was making him feel a bit claustrophobic - in which case it was great work from Reid and a good tactic from the team as a whole.
Quote:Optimist
Can we - Bath fans - take a(nother) minute to consider what an incredible ‘result’ that was yesterday. We took a second team, away, to the equal best team in the league, and went toe to toe - in boxing terms a draw all day long. But more importantly, for the rest of this season, and into the future now, we have getting on for 40 proven Premiership players. And not just fringe players who can mould into the strength of a first-choice team, but are all good enough to create a B team that is actually stronger than the sum of its parts. We were probably all of a mind that their brief was to make sure we came away with a point if possible, and yet JVG motivated them a/ to get over any disappointment at possibly/probably not being involved next week, but b/ to play as if they were all first choice. It’s a really astonishing coaching achievement. I’ve often been a believer in the saying that ‘team spirit is an illusion perceived in the aftermath of success’, but if anyone in that squad says how happy they are to be part of the whole club, I wouldn’t doubt them for a second.
I also feel entirely reassured that we have the resources to get a home semi and reach the Prem Cup final. Against UBB que sera sera, but winning next week would, in many ways, be less surprising than putting 40 points on Saints yesterday.
This. We seem to be forgetting what it was like pre JvG.
But Saints may have scored a few more points than us but they didn't beat us. And the psychological boost that can give us with knowledge that add in the likes of TdT, Ben and Finn etc and our game goes up a serious level
And like Opti, I was reflecting on just how amazing the coaching and off field set up has become that we can field the 23 we did and come so close to an extraordinary win. Kepu holds that offload from Muir at the end well, we are in dreamland
The dark days of Hoopertime just seems like a long ago nightmare
I think that kind of squad could get results against exeter and / or Newcastle if needed.
Arguably 15 players rested that would be in our 'strongest 23

Thought Saints were incredible at times. The way we came back into it and some of our play was nearly as good.
On the penalty incident, what do you think of this counter take ‘tackler makes no, or limited attempted to dip, and makes contact directly with the head’ ?
There’s isn’t much of a dip tbf. I think his arm is chest or shoulder level but as Pollock leans in there is head contact.
I in no way think pollock did anything intentional other than trying to lever his opponent out of the way, as you’d expect.
Didn’t think it was a pen but tbh, there’s quite a few contacts these days that I think are unfairly given as pens or are even carded.
It didn’t ‘decide’ the game any more or less than every other moment in a thrilling game of rugby.
Saints got the W and good for them (you). Cracking team. If only England played like that….
But anyone else odd like me and, despite having a free evening this evening, no going to re watch? If we drew or won, I’d be settling in to enjoy every good bit, every good bit by Saints, every 50/50 decision, every bit of commentary, every single nuance. But cos the scoreboard shows we lost, I’ll probably never watch that game again. Odd, given how good the performance was, but think it just shows that, to my weird BB&W rugby brain, winning really continues to be everything!

Yep fair enough I often find myself explaining to football mates or casual watchers that something will be a red / yellow and they’re in disbelief. I.e accidental or careless contact with head can be penalised etc without it necessarily feeling right in a contact sport etc. Don’t think Enoch did anything intentionally but for me it is a clear pen by the letter of the law. Anyway, enough said in that matter
Despite Dows playing it down we are really developing a proper playing rivalry and some epic games. Long may it continue, I say. Would be good to build a bit of a dynasty of competition without those pesky North Londoners or Leicestershirians involved!
And Dr Bath, I am 100% like that. My wife cannot believe I watch games back having attended them but knows I generally don’t when we lose- I suspect she secretly hopes we lose for that reason despite how it negatively affects my mood 😂

I'm happy with the result as long as Saints play Tigers and we play Chiefs in the playoffs 😄. Then it's another match between our two great clubs at HQ....
More likely we get Tigers but don't write off Briz. They're definitely in the mix for a play off place
I have defended him before for his youthful brashness and behaviour but on Saturday for a lad who clearly has a huge ceiling and can take punishment it felt at times he would have been more at home on football pitch. Certainly Will Muir felt the same way!
I do hope that this is not the sign of things to come as the feverish media coverage and his new promoter take hold, he reminded me of certain French players taking dives and play acting. I just hate seeing it - that also went for Ollie Lawrence when we played last time. There is no place IMHO for play actors on a pitch - it is disingenuous to the many players who give everything and suffer many serious injuries. Rant over.
The extrapolation of that is that, were he a journeyman player, he would simply be described as a complete k&*b.
I remain fairly convinced that, just like Borthwick is routinely described as 'the best coach i've ever worked with' by any England-adjacent player rolled out for media duties, many rugby players' private thoughts about him would be less complimentary.

The only downer for me was our last 'chuckle brothers' lineout, which was far too complex for that time of the match... Just secure the ball!!!
Anyway, onwards and upwards!

As for Pollock, a very talented kn08, but he's got a long way to go before he gets to Chelsea standard play-acting! In the old days he would have rapidly got it beaten out of him. Let's hope he just grows out of it.
BATH supporter since 1975
Adopted players:
2015/6 Tom Homer
2016/7 Matt Banahan
2017/8 Jeff Williams
2018/9 Victor Delmas
2019/20 Semesa Rokoduguni
2020/21 Will Stuart
When exactly was Pollock play acting / diving? Examples please.
I accept many people think he’s a kn0b- no attempt to convince those people otherwise. I agree Miles Reid had a cracking game and nullified a lot of what HP tries at the breakdown. He certainly tries to influence the ref with indiscretions at the breakdown etc as lot of players do- GF, Biggar, Farrell, Ben Spencer to name a few.
However you’re all throwing around that he’s a play actor and bringing the game into footballer realms but with not examples? All I can think of is when Horse ploughed him blinded from behind. He thought it was a pen, ref disagreed, but having Horse running full pelt through your back is hardly diving. And as to those who think he intentionally got Enoch to whack his head / call that intentional diving need your heads wobbled!
I welcome any other examples. Not trying to change your view on HP but feel like a lot of what’s levelled at him above as fairly untrue.

Saintsfella, I'll only speak for myself but you really should take Charlieboa’s advice and move on and leave all this behind.
Noted, great engagement.
Bath fan makes unfounded, sensationalist comment > Saints fan politely challenges the facts > Bath fan tells Saints fan to move on and stop commenting 👍🏻👍🏻

A bit like the deliberate knock-on law, I think the high tackle laws are really difficult for players to adhere to, especially in close encounters where the expectation is for a 6'6" chap to stoop to tackle a someone smaller running at them in the space of 2 or 3 metres.

I'm afraid that I did see Pollack throw his hands up (a-la continental roundballer) at one point in the match, although I can't quite remember when it happened... maybe the Muir challenge but not positive...
Bottom line: Saints won.

‘The Muir Challenge’ which bit of that was play acting?
For the love of God, please read the WHOLE comment!
"MAYBE"!!!
I cannot remember the situation, but I DO recall Pollack throwing up his hands theatrically towards the ref!

In fairness, a lot of players do that. Spencer, for us, certainly
It's up to the ref to warn and then penalise it if he/she feels it is excessive
Of course players will appeal, just as we supporters cheer and jeer potential infringements. The stigma is gone.

Yes all players appeal, from the Prem down to level 10.
The question for me is: Is that right?
The issue for me is that rugby differs from football in that the behaviour is respectful despite players knocking lumps out of each other.
Its an unwritten law that interaction with the ref goes through the skipper, all examples given of players who 'chat back' are captains, Ford, Spencer, Farrell etc. Pollock isn't alone in seeking the refs attention but he is high profile given his other mischievous behaviour. His actions disrespect Dingwall.
I think everything should be done to maintain respect for the referee of course there will be incidents where other players ask the question but should we accept it repeatedly from the same player? I would say that of ANY player not only Pollock.

Personally, I just do not wish us to go down the "diving" and "play acting" debacle we now see in the round ball game. That is just my opinion others will rightly have different ideas.
One thing Pollock does need to understand as do other protégés they are the starlets in our children and future players eyes and as such they will shape the game in the future.
In the words of the law that WAS a penalty simple, the question rightly asked by Ben Kay how many of those shots took place in the previous 80 mins which the TMO did not come in on?
[24/25 adoptee: Francois van Wyk]
My issue is not that it was a pen, but that that same action could ever not be a pen. Stop it being legal to EVER tackle at that height.
It's not just that in the 80min there were other tackles that did involve high contact that may have been missed because it wasn't the end of the game, its that there were almost certainly other tackles of a very similar nature that didn't involve head contact, so are deemed legal, but could so very easily have been dangerous. The result is players continue to tackle high.
I do think Pollock goes looking for it, hardly the first rugby player to do so, at any rate he's little motivation not to put his head in harms way, Gyamfi's solution is to not be at that height. If tackling at that height lead to a penalty every single time, he wouldn't be there. We wouldn't be talking about the other 80 min, all tackles where the tackler doesn't bend enough would have been penalized (and as a result they probably wouldn't have been attempted at that height).
Honestly, we'll make the game safer, eliminate pointless red cards and stop controversial (if correct) decisions such as this one. There's a good chance we might even see a higher paced offloading game. Come on World Rugby, half the world is already doing this, its way passed time to catch up.

I am with you Shippers - I am an old sod and in my ancient days of playing that type of behaviour just wasn't tolerated. Now I am not saying that is the right attitude because rightly so we need to protect players and reduce the risk of long term or life shortening injuries or conditions.
Personally, I just do not wish us to go down the "diving" and "play acting" debacle we now see in the round ball game. That is just my opinion others will rightly have different ideas.

Oh come on. I'm willing to bet that every single person who has ever played the game for a reasonable time will, at some point, have thrown their arms in the air and gone "Oh, c'mon ref, he's lying all over it!" or whatever the alleged offending action is
It's a game that will inevitably get human frustrations going
It's up to the ref to allow it or not and if it becomes too persistent then warn and penalise accordingly
Being highly annoying does kind of go with his position and yes Pollock can be a supremely irritating prat of a player but he is also incredibly talented
I'm also thinking of the likes of Neil Back, Spurrell, Robbo etc - is there something in the JD for having a shock of blond hair?

FTFY .... let's not continually excuse him because he's talented. If I had my way, we'd put more, rather than less, pressure on incredibly talented players to meet the game's other, less measurable values.

Wouldn't really disagree with that, it's just that I think some of the ire on ere is merely anti Pollock and ignores similar stuff from other players including our own
And still think it's refs who are best placed to police this issue

Who are you referring to generally and who specifically at Bath? Spencer doesn't count he is the captain. This is not isolated incidents by the way Gaz.

I was perfect when I was a young man but I do have the humility to recognise that others might not be.
... IMHO, of course.
Now in Honolulu
For donoghue to come in cold and play like that was fairly absurd, hats off.
The likes of reid, bayliss and tdg were excellent as ever.
Hats off to Kieran verden, thought he had a solid game
Good effort from them, and valuable experience banked which will see us in good stead for the coming years
Gaz I am not saying that and yes that has and will always happen - I am on about feigning or play acting to get a review/action.
I have watched Pollock for a little while now and have been highly impressed with his durability - he has been targeted by most teams and like a piece of foam he just seems to bounce back and never appears to be on the floor for any length of time coupled with the fact he has had little time out injured - that was not the same player I saw on Saturday who by far and away was the one player spending the most time on the floor for what seemed innocuous contact.

The whole front row performed extremely well IMO - I know Saints are a renowned scrummaging team but they must have had an experience, and weight advantage, and I can only remember one scrum where they got the beating of us.
Saints have a load of front row injuries at the moment, such as Trevor Davison. Their front row in our game was weaker then their ideal 'cup final' selection:
1 Emmanuel Iyogun
2 Craig Wright
3 Luke Green
16 Robbie Smith
17 Danilo Fischetti
18 Cleopas Kundiona
