Two competitions done – now for the main event

With the success of the “A” team squad in getting to two finals and winning the B&I Cup on Good Friday, effectively we may have seen the last this season of most of those players. Their contribution complete on the field.

I really can’t fault the way the coaching staff have managed the whole squad this season. Not an easy job with so many players to keep interested. The “A” team squad, led by JBB, has been outstanding and has outperformed more illustrious opposition, particularly in the A League where all Premier level teams were vanquished bar Saracens Storm. The B&I Cup has also given this squad a taste of different types of opposition in Pontypridd, Munster and Leinster, valuable experience for their future careers.

So now they can sit back and watch the main event come to its crux. The “main” squad used in the Championship have 7 more games to get the job done. The last league home game saw The Warriors demolish 3rd placed London Scottish and I would expect a similar job done on Yorkshire Carnegie this weekend. I doubt that there will be much more experimentation or squad rotation during the run in to the finals, excepting injury or tactical changes.

Some would say we have to be promoted this season, but I don’t think that it is going to be that critical to be honest. There is barely a thickness of a piece of paper between Bristol and The Warriors in coaches, players, facilities and financials so the two final games are going to be so close, so horribly, teasingly close, that it won’t be a disaster for The Warriors if we come off 2nd best by a smidgeon.

The players we have recruited thus far seem to be committed to the club where ever we end up next season, judging by the comments in the local press from Dean Ryan. He seems to think we are set up players wise if we are not promoted and will only dip further into the market if we go up into the top flight.

I want Premiership rugby next season and I would guess so do our players and coaching staff. We and they both need to play our parts in making sure that goal is achieved. The support is now finding its voice and needs to step that up to another level as the lads strive to give us what we want.

Are we ready? Are you ready? From now until 27th May the support needs to be relentless in its noise. Yorkshire are a warm up for us let’s show this league that we are more than up to the task.
