Cardiff and Llanelli become two of the first sides to play under new srummaging laws.

As of today, referees have added a fourth command to the traditional ‘Crouch; Hold; Engage’ in order to depower the force of the scrum.

 

The four-stage command now sounds ‘Crouch; Touch; Pause; Engage.’

 

IRB chairman Dr Syd Millar believes this change means the competitive nature of the scrum will remain, while protecting players from serious neck and back strain.

 

He recently told the BBC;

 

"An essential element of rugby is its physicality. The IRB believes that the contested scrum is an integral part of the game and that rugby is unique in that its playing charter provides the opportunity for individuals of all shapes and sizes to play the game. That said, we have taken expert medical and technical advice that indicates that it is now appropriate for the game to adopt a less vigorous scrum engagement sequence."

 

Today’s two sets of front rows will’ve been practicing the new style for weeks, with the law being announced a few months back. However, today is the first time the rule has actually been enforced.

 

Gethin Jenkins, Rhys Thomas, Gary Powell, John Yapp, Duane Goodfield, Iestyn Thomas, Matthew Rees, Deacon Manu, Craig Dunlea and Ken Owens are all those who will be affected for the first time in a game situation.
