Rayer Signs Deal with Blues

...That is, Bedford Blues. Former Cardiff RFC and Welsh international full back Mike Rayer has signed a 2 year extension to his contract at the Championship, he had been considered a candidate to replace Dai Young.

Of the news Rayer said,

“There has never been any doubt about my commitment to this club. And I am delighted to extend my stay for another two years. The main factor however in this decision is the support I have received from the chairman who has placed a lot a faith in me and we have a great working relationship.”

Bedford chairman, Geoff Irvine, told the BBC of his delight that his Director of Rugby had re-signed,

“I was very happy to secure Mike's services six years ago and even more happy that he is remaining with us for another two years. Hopefully this will stop any speculation about his future. Both Mike and I believe that we are on a journey with this club which is not yet completed and we have certain goals in mind that we would like to achieve together.”

 The move puts an end to any possibility of Rayer replacing former Cardiff Blues head coach Dai Young.

The Welsh region have currently handed control to Justin Burnell and Gareth Baber, but a review is to be held following the Rugby World Cup in October.

Other possible targets have included Wales’ assistant coach Rob Howley and Scotland’s Andy Robinson, while Russia’s Director of Rugby, Kingsley Jones, remains firm favourite.

However it’s thought the Blues will attempt an audacious coup to bring New Zealand and former Wales coach Grahame Henry to the region.
