Edinburgh do a Blues...

Edinburgh do a Blues...

Edinburgh claimed their first European away win since 2008, beating London Irish 20-19 in a thrilling end-to-end match at the Majeski Stadium.

Edinburgh followed suit of their RoboDirect and Group 2 rivals Cardiff Blues, claiming an away win on the opening weekend of the Heineken Cup 2011/12.

Like the Blues, Edinburgh were underdogs going into the match, but the Scots’ victory has come as a much greater shock than that of the Welsh region.

It was a similar story to last night’s match, in that the home side failed to turn up in the second half, while the two Celtic clubs went from strength-to-strength.

It makes Pool 2 suddenly a lot more interesting, and surely puts Cardiff in the driving seat for qualification. While Edinburgh will be buoyed by a very good performance and result, the Blues will undoubtedly be seen as favourites to take the pool now after their impressive win in France.

Cardiff have failed to qualify from the group stages for the past 2 years, but did win the Amlin Challenge Cup in impressive fashion in 2010. Edinburgh have only reached the Quarter Finals on one occasion in 2003.

Perfect starting weekend really.

Irish and Racing knocked down and will really struggle to qualify with home losses on their record.

Edinburgh looked good today, but we have a great record against them.

Bar a massive drop in performance by the Blues, we should be able to get a 1/4. The challenge will be to try to secure a home 1/4, then, who knows...

If we beat the Irish and Edinburgh beat Racing this group somewhat surprsingly becomes a two horse race with the Scots.
Bit nervous about Friday night. We have a fair few injuries and the Irish will be desperate for a win.
