England finished day one of the Adelaide sevens unbeaten to book a cup quarter final match against Wales tomorrow.

Ben Ryan’s men finished day one as the tournament’s highest scorers, clocking up 111 points in their three games against Scotland, Papua New Guinea and Argentina.

England 45 Scotland 7

Following a third Cup final defeat to New Zealand this season in last weekend’s Hong Kong tournament, England got off to a strong start against Scotland with Nick Royle scoring his first of two hat-tricks.

John Brake, Tom Powell, James Rodwell all touched down before London Irish wing Marcus Watson closed out the scoring with a try on his England Sevens debut.

HSBC Sevens World Series record points scorer Ben Gollings added four conversions as England cruised to a 45-7 victory.

England 45 Papua New Guinea 12

England’s free-scoring rugby continued against Papua New Guinea and the Hong Kong finalists led 21-7 at half time after John Brake opened the scoring and Nick Royle added two more to his tournament tally.

The half time introduction of Mark Odejobi paid dividends after just 21 seconds as he stretched England’s lead early in the second half, and after Papua New Guinea’s Henry Liliket was sin binned England took full advantage, running in tries from Mat Turner, Chris Kakah and Dan Norton.

Royle bagged his second hat-trick of day one at the death leaving England with a second 45-point haul.

England 21 Argentina 19


Another two tries from Royale and one from Oli Lindsay-Hague secured a much tighter affair against Argentina who were 5-0 up in the first minute thanks to Javier Ortega Desio’s touchdown.

Ryan’s men rallied to lead 14-12 at half time and after an equally tight second seven minutes it was Gollings’ superior conversion kicking that booked England’s place in the Cup quarter finals.

MARCUS WATSON has been added to the England squad for this weekend's International Rugby Sevens Adelaide.

The London Irish wing, who makes his first appearance at this level, will replace Greg Barden, who returns home to play for the Royal Navy.

Watson, 19, has played for England's Under 20 side and appeared at last year's IRB Junior World Championship in Argentina.

THE PROSTATE CANCER CHARITY NAMED OFFICIAL CHARITY OF EMIRATES AIRLINE LONDON SEVENS



The Prostate Cancer Charity has become the first Official Charity Partner of the Emirates Airline London Sevens.

The charity has teamed up with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) to raise awareness and vital funds to fight against the most common cancer among men.

The London leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series is hosted annually at Twickenham Stadium and features leading international teams, including England, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Fiji and Samoa.

The Prostate Cancer Charity will be promoting its cause at the Home of England Rugby and the RFU will donate £5 for every ticket sold by the charity to an event that was attended by more than 80,000 fans last year.

This year’s Emirates Airline London Sevens has a beach party theme, with fans encouraged to attend in fancy dress, and home supporters will be cheering on an England side currently top of the table and chasing down a first ever series title.

England Sevens head coach Ben Ryan said: "The Emirates Airline London Sevens is our home tournament and we’re delighted to welcome The Prostate Cancer Charity on board. All men need to be aware of the potential signs and symptoms, and increasing that awareness is important work."

The Prostate Cancer Charity is already closely aligned with rugby as the Official Charity of London-based rugby sevens and music festival RugbyRocks.

After being knocked out in the Adelaide Sevens semi finals, England need to win next month’s London Sevens to keep their hopes of an HSBC Sevens World Series title alive.

Having beaten Wales 17-12 in the quarter finals, England slipped to a 19-0 defeat against South Africa and now trail Adelaide winners New Zealand by 13 points with two tournaments remaining.
England 17 Wales 12

An Alex Cuthbert converted try for Wales opened the scoring, but touchdowns from Mat Turner and Dan Norton had Ben Ryan’s side back on track by half time as Ben Gollings added the extras to make it 14-7.

Wales replied quickly in the second half closing the gap to two points with a try from Jevon Groves but Ryan Jones missed the conversion before Ben Gollings slotted a penalty to close out the game and book a semi-final match against South Africa.
England 0 South Africa 19

England went into the game in search of a sixth successive World Series tournament Cup final, but South Africa, who have impressed at recent tournaments, had other plans and put down a marker after just 32 seconds when Branco du Preez touched down. A Sibusiso Sithole try bookended the first half with South African scores, leaving Ryan’s men with a 12-0 gap to bridge. Tshotsho Mbovane’s try, converted by Cecil Afrika, made it 19-0 and despite the second half introductions of Marcus Watson, Dan Caprice and Mark Odejobi England had no reply and suffered their first shut out of the 2011 World Series.
