First game of the season, thankfully we played early enough in the season @ Walsall to avoid getting stuck in a muddy forward battle. The playing surface provided by Walsall 1st 15 was excellent.
First game of the season, thankfully we played early enough in the season @ Walsall to avoid getting stuck in a muddy forward battle. The playing surface provided by Walsall 1st 15 was excellent. Absences included Danny and Chris with Warwickshire, Bones with work commitments and Sam Moore with injury. The fixture was 17/18's game and was played in three 25 mins sessions with rolling subs.
Bees ran out more than comfortable winners scoring 10 tries in a 62-5 points win. In reality the score didn't really reflect the effort Walsall put in up front but everytime Bees strung a few passes or phases together they looked like scoring. Luke Smith (Skids) new captain for the season led the way with a hat-trick inside the first 25 mins. The other scores I can remember came from Paul, Sam Millichap, Rich B. and James on the wing (apologies for those I forgot!).
Pluses included:
general level of fitness in the forwards, some of whom have clearly benefited from pre-season training, special mention for Liam
great 2nd row debut for former fullback Bruce
gutsy performances from the U-17's, Steve looked completely at home, Phil was strong and physical while James scored a try on his debut
opportunity to try out all players in variety of positions e.g. Cappers @scrumhalf, Andy @ backrow and Motters @ no.8 (please practice binding this week!)
Minuses included:
poor level of discipline from some senior players, particularly in first 25 mins
lineout didn't function as well as it can
too many dropped passes in the backs
Motters poor binding at No.8
Overall about 4/5 out of 10, can do much better!
Next week Banbury away, please meet @ ShX 11.15am, kick-off Banbury 1.30pm, full Colts fixture.
Training next Tuesday 6pm ShX.
