Out Played Rhinos Stunned - Gibson Hatrick Not Enough

Hull KR: (8) 22
Tries: Webster, Dyer, Bauer
Goals: Morton 5

Leeds: (10) 20
Tries: Gibson 3, Smith
Goals: Sinfield 2

Justin Morgan's Hull KR made their way to the top at the Super League table for the first time ever after a hard faught match against Leeds Rhinos. A few minutes after the starting hooter, Jones-Buchanan was denied a early try after he accordingly knocked the ball on. However it was Rovers who saw the first points make their way onto the scoreboard after five minutes when Morton kicked a penalty after Silverwood judged the Rhinos as being not square in the tackle. 5 minutes later Diskin got us a penalty with a quick play on the ball which caught the marker unaware. Gibson jumped over the line right by the left hand corner flag to make the score 4-2. Sinfield kicked a brilliant conversion as the score went to 6-2. Donald and McGuire created a superb partnership but the great deffence from the rovers stopped us from reaching the line. Just before half time Webb collected his own grubber kick at the half way line and made a great pass to Burrow who passed once again to McGuire. McGuire then passed the ball which looked to travel forward to Lee Smith. The touch judge seemed to have thought it had been carried with momentum but Stevo disagreed. Of course the try was given as a new video replay rule came in at the start of this season which means that the video ref cannot contest a forward pass via the technoligy of the video screen. The Hull fans were not best pleased as our fans went riot in the temporary stand at Cravern Park. Sinfield failed though to back up the lucky try with a conversion. We led 10-8 at the half time break after we scored with Lee Smith and Ashley Gibson but Hull KR made a powerful start to the second half with Luke Dyer and Andreas Bauer extending their advantage. Ashley Gibson scored two more tries to seal his hatrick but this did not seal the win for us. Hull KR won this game on better preperation and a better kicking games as we scored more tries than them.
