Little Tommy Hawkk looks back on the Chiefs victory at Sale
CHIEFS FAITHFUL DEMAND NEW COACH. (Transport, not RB!)
So after an 8am start, a lot of toilet talk, a slow sluggish drive to Cullompton to try to shift gears into place, and followed by a wonder up to Tiverton, we were forced to await a new coach. Many of the Chiefs faithful were wondering if this was just the beginning of a bad day. As some may remember, last time we paid a visit to Sale Sharks, the coach was forced to turn around due to an incident at Bristol. But not this time, as we trundled on in the new coach, to arrive at the ground at 2pm, after partaking in raffles, quiz’s and the prestigious Away supporters moment of the season. Inside the ground drinks were flowing, and the sun shining. After a loud sending off for the Chiefs with the usual Tomahawk Chop it was 3pm, and time for kick off.
The day started well for the Chiefs, as Argentinian fly half Ignacio Mieres slotted his first penalty of the day to make it 0 – 3 to the Chiefs. After some huge defence by the visitors, they began their attack, which eventually led to Nic Sesterat dotting down to put the team 0 – 10 up. But in the 31st minute Charlie Hodgson slotted his penalty, and some great attack from the Sharks saw centre Chris Bell run over for his team, with Hodgson converting. Half time: 10 – 10
The Chiefs were off to a good start, when just 3 minutes into the 2nd half, Mieres slotted his first kick of the half to make it 10 -13. Huge hits and defence from the Chiefs eventually lead to a knock on by Bell just inside the Exeter half, and enabled winger Matt Jess to pick up the loose ball and charge the length of the pitch to secure the Chiefs 2nd try of the afternoon. Meires again converting. However, pressure from the home team lead to Sale lock Wame Lewaravu to charge through the Chiefs defence, 5 metres out and score Sharks 2nd try which again Charlie Hodgson converted. Chiefs replacement Gareth Steenson slotted another penalty for the Chiefs after a powerful scrum, to widen the score a little. Both the home attack and the visitor’s defence was huge, and neither team wanted to be the one to lose, but the Chiefs stole a turnover which replacement scrum half Junior Poluleuligaga snapped up and a simple offload to Chiefs captain Tommy Hayes lead to a superb run to the line and 3rd try for the Chiefs, Steenson converted and the away tribe celebrated in usual style – noisy. A late try from Sale winger Addison was converted and it was just enough for the Sharks to snatch a LBP. But the only people celebrating was the tribe, after another superb game which the Chiefs had won 24 – 30.
But this was not the end of the celebrations – the Away Supporters Player of the Season; Tom Johnson, Away moment of the season; Brett Sturgess for his try and the carrying of David Strettle over the line at Sarries and a special award to Rob Baxter was still to be given out.
