ExTeddChief looks back at the Chiefs win on Saturday

Messy but never count us out!!

So...wake up, hit the pool with Dad...breakfast at Costa’s and various bits and pieces later and we settled down to watch England vs the All Blacks.

Well what can I say about that contest that hasn’t already been said? They say the All Blacks had norovirus! Well I couldn’t care less if someone had stolen their supply of Flat White! The men in white knocked them flat in the most impressive performance I’ve seen from an England side in years!

And then I had to get a couple of layers on before Dad gave me a lift to Sandy Park on what was a bloody cold day. Despite having gotten tickets for this one the evening after the Ospreys match I was at one point thinking of changing plans due to my best mate from school’s 30th birthday. It was a no-lose situation though and I wasn’t able to pass on the other ticket particularly quickly.

So, I got dropped off...eventually meet up with my grandfather and we hit the toilet and grabbed a coffee. I wasn’t feeling 100% but the show goes on right? He had just come in from Sidmouth and hadn’t heard a thing about the England match...well he was absolutely stunned about that of course. 10 minutes to go and we’re in the SW Comms stand ready to roll!

Well the Chiefs had the first attack of the match and Steeno slotted a pen. Lee Thomas levelled the scores for Wasps soon afterwards though. Steeno wasn’t done though and slotted another kick to put the Chiefs back in the lead.

After that though it got ugly. I’m not quite sure what was up with the Chiefs but Wasps soon forced our backs against the wall and eventually our defence gave way, Elliot Daly getting the first try of the game, Thomas converting before slotting another pen. The Chiefs tried to reply but our initial surge forward ran into a dead end. We kept at it though, Joe Simpson getting binned helped and finally our pack steamrollered over the tryline – Whitehead claiming the score. Steeno converting. Once again though we found ourselves with our backs against the wall but when Wasps broke through again ... well ..”forward pass” was the cry. Dumb refs get everywhere. Tom Varndell claimed the try, Thomas converted.

The Chiefs quickly surged forwards again and nerves were starting to set in while we won a series of scrums at the SW Cooms end. We really needed to draw level before half time...and the cheers when Haydn ran through included an element of relief. Steeno converting.

Half time. It’s crazy. Wasps are one of the traditional powers of English rugby yet we’re on much better form than them and we were on our turf. Therefore I was slightly disappointed by what I’d seen from the Chiefs so far. Anyway, my grandfather and I split a pasty then headed back to our seats just as the match was starting again.

The Chiefs were the team on the attack early on, earning ourselves two pens. The first one Steeno missed, the other he hit.
Then came the rain. Then came the rain blowing in our direction – annoying given that the SW Comms stand is meant to be under cover. Another Wasp got himself binned in the meantime and then we got ourselves another try...Dollman collecting smoothly to touch down. Steeno converted. Despite everything it was now our game to lose.

After that, well that looked to be pretty much that. The stubbornness of the Wasps defence preventing us from getting a WBP and as long as we didn’t give the likes of Christian Wade too much space, the visitors looked unlikely to score either. Right at the end Tommy Bell slotted a pen to give the visitors a well earned LBP! The win was still ours though.
