Steve 'Pirate' Parrett takes a look forward to Saturdays visit of Bath to take on Exeter Chiefs
Can Chiefs kill the Bath Duck?

The stewards at Sandy Park are going to have their work cut out next Saturday. Another full house at the expanded ground is going to mean lots of newly made acquaintances on the terraces just through sheer proximity. However, it's going to worth the close encounters of the Chiefs kind to be present at what promises to be a tasty match-up between Exeter and Bath Rugby.
Somewhat puzzlingly described as 'a derby' - it's almost exactly 100 miles by road from the Rec to Sandy Park so not exactly Liverpool/Everton across Stanley Park - this game is all about the play-off places. Bath are second with 47 points and Chiefs fourth with 44. A win for the latter will probably, bearing bonus points in mind, result in a switch in the relative rankings.
Does a look at recent form help work out who is going to come out on top? Here are the last six Premiership matches:
Bath WWLWLL
Exeter LLLLWW
At first glance the last two games for each club would suggest Chiefs have the upper hand. Not so, Chiefs beat teams in 9th and 10th place, Bath lost to teams in 1st and 3rd. So no real clues there.
How about matches between the two sides over the years to give us a clue to the winner? Hmmmm, time to get behind the sofas Chiefs' fans: in every Premiership encounter between the two there has only been one winner. And it wasn't Chiefs. Indeed, at the reverse fixture at The Rec in December Bath gave Chiefs their one comprehensive beating of the season scoring 4 tries to 2 and running out 31-14 winners.
Gloom and despondency for Exeter then? Don't be silly. With England only wanting Jack Nowell, the Chiefs will be able to field a settled side including Premiership top scorer Thomas Waldrom, in-form centre Sam Hill, the force of nature that is Dave Ewers and, most importantly, the mercurial Henry Slade who, after a slightly shaky start at Quins on Saturday, proceeded to boss the game and collect 27 points.

Enough of us, what about Bath? Bath's first choice backs are a delight to watch. England's current 10 George Ford, Eastmond proving that big isn't always beautiful; Watson the silky runner; Joseph the current media darling (rightly so); Woodburn who is quite clearly an intelligent player; Homer thrown straight into action having impressed at Irish. There's just one unknown, about whom I know little, a chap called Burgess. Joking aside, sooner or later, the latent talent that sits inside Sam Burgess is going to explode. Let's just hope it is later than Saturday. On balance, the three Bath England call-ups may just count against them in the backs division
Up-front? Very even contest, with neither side likely to dominate. The back row battle will be fascinating and I fully expect Dave Ewers to continue to add to his reputation with fellow players and spectators alike. The Desso pitch will ensure a fair battle between the front five, with the footing remaining sure despite the likely squalls coming in this week.

A prediction? It will be noisy. Bath fans tend to travel to Sandy Park in big numbers (they enjoy being under cover) and the Library may just get their heads out of their books for enough time to raise the occasional huzzah. If Big Chief realises he needs to be at the middle of the pitch several minutes before kick-off he may even get the whole ground wound up.

Result prediction? Chiefs to finally win against their bogey team. It will be close though and the buttock clenching that Chiefs's supporters are habitually used to exercising will, I think, be in evidence again.
Last prediction? I will be enjoying a glass or two of Wolftrap (supplied by Tivoli Wines -yes indeed, disgraceful product placement) by 19:30 on Saturday. Win OR lose.

Missing James, Catt, Wilson, Thomas, Attwood, Ford, Joseph, Banahan and Agulla.
If you don't win this weekend serious questions should be asked.

Yes indeed. I'll be asking what grape variety is in that WolfTrap. Some things are more important than a game of rugby.

At home with Bath losing nine players to international call-up and injury, we will never have a better opportunity to break our duck! However, they be smarting after two losses so we will have to be on top form!

We should have beaten Bath years ago, only poor ref decisions costing/gifting games.
As for the present, Bath are spending big, and are favourites to get a home semi. They have strength in depth, far more than ourselves, their front row may be weaker than usual, but every where else on the field they still have quality.

Not sure what's so funny, just saying we're missing four props, three England players and our first choice wingers. Chiefs overwhelming favourites to win and probably win well.

I think that is somewhat false pessimism from ballsout. Just because Bath are missing some front-line players doesn't in itself make Exeter favourites IMHO. Bath have superb strength in depth, perhaps the best in the league, and the players coming in are close to, if not as every bit as good as those missing. We may on paper be the 'form' team but Bath's losses have come away at Sarries and home to top of the table Saints. Perhaps Ford has been a important loss but I would argue that Nowell has been our best player in the last few games - setting the tempo, aggressive in defence, incisive in attack. Not forgetting we haven't beaten Bath in 9 league attempts. To me it adds up to a tight affair.
As often is the case whoever gets the better at the set-piece, the break-down and the tactical kicking game will go a long way to winning the match. So a closer look...
The scrum - Bath's strongest asset for the most of the season, but with Bath missing a few front-line props and with Exeter without Moon it could go either way. But it's not all about the fat boys, don't forget the men pushing behind, and Bath have a couple of lumps! Verdict: Honours even
Line-out - Exeter has suffered at the line-out recently whilst it remains another of Bath's stronger points even without Attwood to marshall. Yeandle may get a start ahead of LCD this weekend because of this. Verdict: Slight Bath advantage
Break-down - Exeter will be up against the world-class Louw. Saints got the better of Bath in this department last week but I can't see this happening two weeks in a row. Saying that Exeter's back row were imperious last week tackling and harrying anything that moved, winning at least 4 turn-overs in the process. Bath's bigger more mobile back-row may be a different challenge though. Verdict: Honours even
Tactical kicking - Bath will again miss Ford's supremacy in this department and despite Devoto's undoubted talent he perhaps hasn't had the experience of controlling games in the 10 shirt. Meanwhile, with Nowell out it is possible that Steenson will come back in at 10 and the in-form Slade move back to 13, giving Exeter plenty of options, and indeed much accuracy. Verdict: Exeter advantage
So with bath possibly winning more set-piece ball and Exeter gaining metres in the air it may well come down to who can look after the ball in possession better. I for one am expecting a close game!

Bath fans trying to wear the underdog hat doesn't sit well with me. Smacks of getting your excuses in early and I'm reminded of a Plains Proverb: Make my enemy brave and strong, so that if defeated, I will not be ashamed.
Personally, the highlight for me will be welcoming the 'delightful' Bath fans onto our Board once more. In particular, Pluko, whining about the plight of Native Americans and Otto-7 trolling for all his worth.

We've also got the smallest squad in the league and are missing four props. Ford is also a huge loss, we struggle badly without him. Not inviting any sympathy just saying that I would be amazed if Chiefs lost this weekend with so many of our team missing.

Ballsout...
If your team has any asperations of winning this title than i`m afraid you should be putting us to the sword even with a depleted squad.
Thats the way it goes every year;players get called up/injured.The BETTER teams deal with it.
Game too close to call imo.

I appreciate what you're saying and agree if we do have aspirations of being more than the nearly men we shouldn't be affected by call ups and injuries, but I think any team would struggle with 4 props missing and the best 10 in the country away. Unfortunately 10 is somewhere we are very short this season (Poor management IMO).
I still predict a close game but a Chiefs win. First trip to Sandy Park for me so looking forward to your hospitality!

To be fair,if we are serious about finishing in the top 4 then this is a game we SHOULD expect to win even if we have this monkey on our back.
We certainly should have beaten Bath at home last year and this is a Bath team missing lots of the team that day and we have improved. That doesn`t mean a lot if you don`t turn up on the day though and Bath have strength in depth and with quality players such as Louw and individual brilliance in the back line to win games without a lot of ball so we will have to play at or somewhere near our best. If not the monkey continues his free ride....

On form, even without missing players (and this is not an excuse), as I have had the privilege of watching both sides live this season, Exeter will win at a canter- by 15-20 points.
Would be cock a hoop if Bath did win but just cannot see it. Exeter carry too much fire power in many positions and are playing with confidence and power. Henry Slade at 10 has really opened up your game, and even missing Jack Nowell, you will get too much ball and you chase and harry well, and your back row are faster and bigger than Bath's.
Devoto may be talented but he is definitely not an AP 10 yet and it has shown in the last 3 games. Henson's immediate going to Bristol may have been a management mistake as we really have struggled without George Ford. Also our scrum half, Mickey Young is poor compared to young Cook who is coming back from injury. Am surprised Stringer is not starting but possibly cannot play for a long period.
Rokoduguni has also lost his mojo since hip injury and is fighting his way back to full fitness, and we miss the injured Banahan who has been excellent this season. You guys will see what a good player Ollie Woodburn is and how we will miss him.
Also our scrum lacks power without Attwood and our lineout has been very poor, and was taken apart by both Sarries and Saints. Young Auterac has been the find of our season but we miss Wilson and now Henry Thomas who has been revitalised this season coming from Sale and is our form prop.
Webber does not deserve his hooking place and Batty has been a revelation but is poor at throwing in. Very surprised Fearns starts over Garvey who again is carrying an ankle problem and probably is just filling the bench.
Will be at the game shouting my head off for the Blue, Black & Whites. I only hope it is not a cakewalk for Exeter.

I have and always will be a Bath fan and just go to watch the Chiefs with many friends who are Chiefs fans when Bath are not playing or I cannot travel to long distance away games. It is great being a mutual observer and I certainly like the way their club is run and how they aspire to be a top side, plus their young player development.
I will be exhorting Bath to win as I have done for over 30 years (as can be confirmed by those who have sat around me in that time) but cannot, regretfully, see us do it this time with the side we have available.
What score are you predicting BathRugby RM? Lets see what happens on the day.

Bath don't have the smallest squad in the league. Their website just separates the first team squad and the 12 or so academy players. When both merged the bath squad is a similar size to the rest.
Game going to be extremely tight imo
