Can’t understand why we are going that strong risking unnecessary injuries to the likes of Frost etc.. when a World Cup winning u20 international lock in Joe Bailey is not even getting a look in from the bench. So so disappointed for him and others. How are our younger academy players ever going to get any experience?
Unless injured this is a game Hammersley should be playing in rather than the premiership all a bit odd but that’s the norm re selection this season.
I think it must be get a home quarterfinal as the priority as a club as we are so desperate for the cash from a progression game?
A total mismatch on paper but if wet may keep the score down.

Shame that so much of our U20s talent is being starved of minutes but with our Premiership ambitions all but dead, I understand throwing everything at the Cup.

3 progression games = close to £1million in gate receipts plus, presumably, some TV money.

For years other clubs put out their firsts whilst we used it as a development competition. For years pther clubs (particuarly Bath) sabotaged the A League with non-available frot row players. There is no second XV competition any more so keep the firsts playing. We're not going to make the playoffs unless 6 clubs go bust before the end of the season so the status of the games that are played is irrelevant.

This selection makes no sense to me. Almost a Peem side with the youngsters not being given a look. Are we trying to force our England U20 players out by ignoring them.

Are you joking? Exeter are infamous for putting out stronger teams in this competition than any other Prem club. This year takes it to a whole new level, but remember the days of Moray Low and Greg Holmes in your front row?

Look at the XV Bath are fielding (and winning heavily with) if you want an example of what this club is meant for.

Will it really make that much of a difference money wise? The prem cup games don't draw big crowds, and if not part of the season ticket I can see plenty of season ticket holders not spending the extra to attend these, especially those in the higher priced areas of the ground. I wonder how many we'd need through the gate to break even on progression prem cup fixtures?
Don't think there's any TV money unless you get to the final (assuming that's being shown).

I dont have a problem with selection.

Critics can't have it both ways. On the one hand many insist that these players either aren't ready for the Premiership, or aren't Premiership quality to begin with. On the other hand its embarrassing for them to be playing in the lower competition.

As Exeforever says, virtually every other Premiership club has put out their strongest team in previous years an attempt to win silverware and in many of those seasons we didn't. The rules are the rules. If it is designed to be a tournament for younger players then the framework of the competition should ensure that.

There are some obvious positives imo.

Firstly the players need to get back used to winning ways. Most agree that confidence has been low. A good result in this competition can only help.

Secondly,experience. Over and above confidence, these players need the experience of competing in knock out matches and it will pay dividends next year.

Thirdly coaching. Letting Pellow and Thomas compete with the same players does provide some insight into the coaching hierarchy, or at least what it should be.

Fourthly, silverware. Some say that this doesn't matter. Well I van guarantee that it matters to the players and winning it is certainly better than not winning it.

Fifthly, money. Every pound spent at the ground matters and getting to the progression stages is important for the club.

Finally, anything that @#$%& off Ballsup has to be a good thing...😀🤣😇

If they make it through to the final they'll have a mere two week rest between group stages and QF, but other than that it's a game a week til the beginning of April and the European break.

Completely agree with NMs comments (18:12 today). This is as much about money as anything else. We desperately need another home game. If that's £1m or £500k in the bank it's the difference between profit and loss on the last financial statement. It's a shame, but given we don't have a financial sugar daddy to rely on (unlike a certain trolls apparent club) we have to grab what we can to ensure there's a club here to debate next season. If we were challenging the top of the table, I'm confident things would look very different.

Exeterfan i think the club would pull 6000 fans and at £25.00 a ticket average thats £150000 plus bar and food so a nice earner which of course would help towards a decent player. Every little helps in these torrid times.

I certainly hope so. If they price the games taking into consideration its not League/Europe level then that'd be a fantastic move.

Gloucester couldn’t buy a win in the Premiership last season so concentrated their efforts on this competition, seems to have paid off this season.
Agreed it would have nice to see some of our youngsters but 4 of them are currently away with the U/20s!

Hartbury 7 Chiefs 80. Exeter oicked a complete first team and Hartpury picked a complete second XV. Understand the logic but Chiefs were the first to bemoan the demise of the A league and opportunity for younger players so other clubs appear to be using this as a stepping stone. In 4 games from recollection not one player been introduced. Surely integrating a few against either Hartbury of Pirates would have no effect on the outcome!!

Yet again rugby's governing bodies are not supporting their clubs nor the sport.
Without some rules of engagement the premiership clubs are going to use the PRC just for their own particular, selfish, reasons. Also the invitation to the championship sides will soon become meaningless to the clubs, and just as important their fans and spectators.

Like the vast majority of others on this forum I would have preferred a different team, certainly up front, the likes of Roots and Frost could have been rested. I can understand a full selection if we try out loads of new attacking plays. If we revert to type and use forward power to bash it up, we'll have learnt nothing and possibly injured/tired out some players.
With regards to the wider competition without some rules this type of selection will always happen, we've been on the recieving end a few times. Although Championship teams will struggle to compete, I'm not sure it puts spectators off. If I was a championship fan I'd want to see internationals playing at my club, rather than loads of people I don't know.

I don’t see the reasoning, hope the coaches know what they’re doing.
