Super Cru secure home win against RL giants Wigan

The Celtic Crusaders claimed their second Super League win on Saturday evening amid historic scenes at the Brewery Field. For the second time this season, one of the sport’s most famous names were put to the sword as John Dixon’s men secured a 22-16 win over the Wigan Warriors.

Wigan's players looked dismayed, embarrassed and horrified as the horn blew shortly after half-past seven on Saturday evening.

By contrast, Cru players and fans alike were delighted as the Saders claimed their second Super League win and their first at the Brewery Field in Bridgend.

The Crusaders secured a huge and fully-deserved 22-16 win over the Wigan Warriors as Rugby League in South Wales took another huge stride forward.

Since the amazing win at Odsal, Cru have suffered convincing losses against Catalans, Wakefield and the Harlequins. For that reason, Wigan came to South Wales expecting an easy win but were left shell-shocked as some dogged defence and clinical finishing sealed maximum points for the mighty Saders.

A heavy away following from Lancashire swelled the attendance to 5,253, and though Cru were arguably outnumbered on the terraces - hopefully the home support will now swell for next weekend's encounter with Hull Kingston Rovers at the Brewery Field.

The away side wasted early opportunities and proved sloppy in possession and Cru took advantage of their wastefulness with the opening try of the match. Jace Van Dijk latched onto Peter Lupton's pass and steamed over the line before Lennon booted over the extras.

The visitors restored parity through Harrison Hansen; but Cru sealed a 12-6 half-time advantage with Van Dijk turning provider and Lupton scorer for Cru's second try of the match. Loose-forward Lupton latched onto a huge cross-field kick from his skipper and the extras were duly converted.

Cru extended their lead to a sensational ten points through Mark Dalle Cort; but Lennon's missed conversion sparked a Wigan fightback despite some stubborn Saders defending. Wigan's support were celebrating tries from Cameron Phelps and Amos Roberts which left the score deadlocked at sixteen each to set-up a tense finale.

Cru, however, had the last laugh. A Wigan knock-on gave the hosts a late set of six and Lupton stormed over with Lennon converting. Bruises and bumps were ignored at the death as Cru's firm backline held strong to secure a massive win for the club and the sport in the South Wales region.

Superb. Get in Cru! Let's build on this. Rugby league has a real future here and the people of South Wales have an elite sports team to be genuinely proud of.
