Saders sport ‘Try Essai’ tops during Catalans defeat

Cru fan GH: 'Try Essai'

The Celtic Crusaders sported different jerseys for this weekend’s trip to France. More eagle-eyed Saders fans watching on the television, or those loyal souls that made the trip to Perpignan, will have noticed altered red jerseys with the words “Try Essai” emblazoned across the middle.

The shirt was still red, and produced by KooGa, but the badge was on the top-left hand side, the Welsh dragon was missing and some extra white stripes could be seen. They looked very similar to Llanelli Scarlets tops.

The reason that the Saders were forced to wear a temporary kit in France is due to the country's advertising laws. As the Welsh Rugby Union have discovered on numerous occasions in recent years, French laws prohibit the advertising of alcohol products during sporting events. Therefore, usual sponsor "Brains Beer" could not appear across the jerseys for this Super League fixture.

To combat this problem, as the WRU have done, the Saders had "Try Essai" across the shirts. The French word ‘Essai' translates as ‘try' in English - but, when spoken aloud, sneakily invites fans to try the company's famous bitter.

Sadly, as reported, the new shirts couldn't help inspire the Saders to victory on foreign soil. John Dixon's men were thumped 34-0 with the Dragons running over seven tries in the process. To read our match report, please click here.

The XIII looked more like Wales than ever! Shame about the performance which wasn't too clever either.

The sky sports commentator was very complimentary which was nice, but a nil is a nil!
