The South Wales Scorpions had to settle for a bonus point as they slipped to another home defeat on Sunday afternoon. In a tight contest, the unbeaten Oldham Roughyeds bagged a 22-16 win at the Gnoll to maintain their promotion challenge and heap disappointment on the league's newest outfit.

After the hefty defeat against Hunslet, many fans feared another disappointing afternoon as the unbeaten Roughyeds visited the Gnoll.

However, the Scorpions produced a much improved display and could consider themselves unlucky to only pick up a bonus point after a battling comeback against the Lancashire club.

Lucas Onyango's early try gave the visitors the lead - though the sizeable away following will have been disappointed that Oldham didn't add further early scores as they bossed the opening period.

The Scorpions soon settled their early nerves and drew level through the in-form Steve Parry, but Oldham quickly regained their advantage with Danny Whitmore breaking through to score.

Oldham extended their lead yet further with Michael Fogerty scoring on the flank as Oldham bagged an 18-6 half-time advantage.

Oldham went 22-6 up thanks to Neil Roden's second-half try, but the under-pressure Scorpions kept fighting and staged an impressive late fightback to gain a bonus point.

The arrears were reduced with 18 minutes left as Christiaan Roets scored another fantastic try. The former Bridgend Blue Bull charged home after Jamie Murphy's superb run and lay-off.

A hugely exciting finish was then set up as Craig Richards scored the Scorpions' third try of the afternoon - but there was to be no fairytale ending for the home side.

But we should get into the play offs if we play like that?

Bonus points will be vital come September...

Its dissappointing considering the way the team came back in the second half was very encouraging and they could have snatched it at the end , some basic errors (basic!) in the first half when they got two quick tries .Slowly getting used to the players style of play now myself as im sure they have with each other , though Parry wearing the number 2 shirt for the first try was a bit perplexing at the time. Roll on Swinton !
