Blackpool steal the win in South Walian sunshine

The South Wales Scorpions put up a brave performance but suffered yet another narrow defeat on Bank Holiday Monday. Tries in the 67th and 69th minute proved crucial for Blackpool Panthers as they maintained their amazing run with a 28-24 win.


With stalwart clubs like Oldham and Hunslet plying their in Championship One, Blackpool Panthers may not be the most famous name in the division.

However, having won all six of their league fixtures to date and having dumped Whitehaven out of the Challenge Cup, the Lancastrian outfit were heavy favourites at the Gnoll on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Scorpions battled hard and, at times, looked likely to win the game - but poor defence proved costly as Blackpool continued their promotion charge with a 28-24 win in South Wales.

Anthony Seibold's men were helped by a host of sin bins from the visiting side as the Panthers were reduced to twelve men on three separate occasions. However, Blackpool still bagged the win with two tries in three minutes late on proving hugely important.

A brace from Craig Richards and tries from Steve Parry and Jamie Murphy meant the home side were always in contention but, ultimately, Blackpool had more guile and the Scorpions were guilty of some lacklustre defending.

The result condemns the Welsh outfit to a fourth successive defeat. Yet another bonus point is useful - but the Scorpions need to half this woeful run as hopes of a play-off finish get damaged by the week. Next up is the long, long trip to Gateshead.

Dirtiest side ive seen so far 3 yellow cards could have been at least 6or 7 we are still a bit nieve somtimes but are getting more of a rugby league side every game i think we need to ride this first season out and if we make the play offs great I think next year will be a differant thing alltogether

A better performance from the team. Not SoOooooo many mistakes this time round. However saying that, it seems the 'Teflon' tackle bags have been out in force during training!

I feel sorry for Andrew Gay, he'd done well up until being caught out of position for the winning try. Some of the movves were overplayed a little when going straight through would have been the more successful /strenuous option.I hope Geraint will be back in time for the Swinton home match


It was really frustrating watching from the stand, soo close yet again. South Wales now has two matches away against the two worst sides in the division statistically in Gateshead and London. They need to get two good wins from these, i think they should do it well on the back of recent performances

Agreed - on current form we should get max points on the road from the next two games.
