No Northern Rail but in the Challenge Cup next season!

The demise of Blackpool Panthers has meant that the South Wales Scorpions have elected to opt out of the coming seasons Northern Rail Cup to ensure that the number of competing teams is equal. The RFL were grateful for the gesture which leaves the team hoping to find some friendly fixtures ahead of the league season starting. Chairman Phil Davies summarised the position as follows:

"We are looking forward to an exciting second season at South Wales Scorpions," said Phil. "Our Championship One season will be starting in early March and we can't wait to play in the Carnegie Challenge Cup for the first time and be on the road to Wembley. We'll have news of some pre-season friendlies soon as well as a lot  more exciting developments for the club so watch this space."

If possible I think we should have taken part this year.

We finished with an average well above the 'break even' figure or so it seemed. What the actual facts of that are I'm not sure but if there was some spare cash then it could have maybe been used to fund a campaign in the NRC.

I don't know the finances however and know that it costs money to take part so if it is viewed the money wasn't available or could be used better elsewhere then I have faith in the owners (if only I could say that about Crusaders at any point in their history). I would have liked to have seen our lads test themselves against Championship opposition but we may get the chance in the Challenge Cup regardless.

hear what you say crucru but I'd rather the board keep a keen eye on all expenses. NRC doesn't give the club much funding and what funding there is gets used up in a couple of away games (phil davies mentioned this in a supporters club meeting). Also how many games were rescheduled with the bad weather last year?

A good call I say, as long as there are a couple of meaningful friendlies beforehand so the guys don't go into the competition cold.

I hear the draw for the Challenge cup 1st round is Dec 7th. Scorpions will come in at round 3 but I understand Cynon Valley Cougars are in 1st round draw.
