Four forwards named in training squad after open trial

Forward quartet Tylan Mafi, Dan Crimmins, Christopher Strick and Izaac Duffy all impressed during a recent trial and have been handed the opportunity to join the South Wales Scorpions training squad.

Scorpions Head Coach Aled James has confirmed that the four players will link-up with the squad for an "extensive training" programme in the New Year - and hopes all four earn full-time contracts.

28-year-old Mafi is arguably the most intriguing addition.  The Bridgend Blue Bulls man has caps for Tonga rugby union at under-24 level, played for the Celtic Crusaders in a friendly and has represented the Welsh Dragonhearts in RL.

Duffy has impressed with UWIC, Strick is a Union player with Felinfoel and Newport Titans youngster Crimmins has represented Wales and Great Britain Community Lions at under-18 level.

All four will be targeting a place in the Scorpions XIII for the opening league game of the season at Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium.

No surprise on Dan Crimmins, good to hear about Mafi too who's been on the scene a while and has a quality heritage. I was just wondering whether these four include taking on some of the U18 boys who performed admirably recently outside the likes of Davies and Carter who were offered full contracts?

Hopefully Mafi can impress during training. Definetly an interesting addition to the initial squad. Good luck to all four.
