A Welsh side made up entirely of South Wales Scorpions RLFC players claimed a bronze medal in the inaugurial Rugby League Commonwealth Championship, an Under-19s nines tournament.

In a hard-fought contest in in North Lanarkshire, the Scorpions players secured third place in the tournament with a 20-8 victory over Canada.

The tournament was arranged to showcase rugby league as an exhibition sport ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this year.

Rugby league was ratified as a category three sport by the Commonwealth Games General Assembly in November 2011; a move regarded as a progressive step in attempts to get the sport included in a future Games.

Victories over Scotland and Jamaica sealed Wales a place in the semi-finals, despite a Group A defeat against Australia. However, hopes of winning the competition were ended by Papa New Guinea at the semi-final stage.

The competition was ultimately won by PNG, who beat Australia in the final 22-8.
