Scorpions set for Cardiff Arms Park test

Competitive rugby league returns to Cardiff Arms Park for the first time since 1998 on Sunday, with South Wales Scorpions entertaining London Skolars in the Welsh capital.

The Scorpions have played a friendly match against a Warrington youth XIII at the stadium once before, but Sunday's game marked the first competitive outing for the South Wales club at the iconic Arms Park.

London Skolars are the only team whom the Maesteg-based club have beaten this season, and long-suffering Scorpions fans will be hoping the change of venue will bring some new luck and ensure an unlikely double over the English expansion side.

The following letter was sent to the South Wales Echo this week. It remains to be seen how many supporters will make their way to CAP for this encounter - but, after some very low gates at Maesteg, hopefully a few intrigued Cardiffians will swell the attendance for Sunday's 3pm kick-off.

 

Dear Editor,

Rugby league returns to the Welsh capital on July 27th - and I'd urge anyone with an interest in this fantastic, fast-paced sport to get down to Cardiff Arms Park.

In the day's main event, South Wales Scorpions RLFC entertain London Skolars in a Championship One clash at 3pm. The game pits two clubs together that ply their trade many miles away from the sport's traditional heartland.

Scorpions haven't had too much success on the field this season - but, often in the face of adversity, have proudly flown the flag for South Wales rugby league since 2010, after the Celtic Crusaders and Super League were so cruelly prised away from the area.

July 27th marks the first time competitive rugby league has been played at CAP since 1998 - and this tiny piece of local sports history could provide excellent entertainment for anyone seeking a sporting summer fix.

Excellent letter Chris. Doubt those muppets at the Echo will use it though, they couldn't even find the space to print the match preview. Grrr.
