Emanueli the hero as Scorpions end 392-day wait for home win

On a memorable day for South Walian rugby league, a late drop goal from Paul Emanueli handed the Scorpions a 19-18 victory against London Skolars, watched by 486 at Cardiff Arms Park, the highest home gate this season.

With minutes remaining, Emanueli showed nerves of steel to convert a stunning, long-range drop goal and edge the Scorpions in front.

The win sealed the Scorpions' second victory of the season, having earlier in the campaign beaten Skolars on the road. The full-time whistle was met by scenes of jubilation from players, staff and supporters.

It was a determined and dogged display from the Scorpions, who were arguably a little unfortunate to only lead 12-6 at the break, having narrowly missed the line on a couple of occasions during the opening 40 minutes.

Phil Carleton broke the deadlock for the hosts, before ex-Scorpion Courtney Davies helped the visitors into the lead with a converted try.

However, Mike Grady's men ensured a narrow half-time advantage thanks to a converted try from Jordan Sheridan and an Emanueli penalty.

Skolars arguably looked the more polished outfit with Grady's men, at times, struggling to cope with the immense power, drive and physical presence of some of London's players. However, Scorpions showed admirable resistance and great spirit to force a late comeback.

Favourites London bagged the first two tries of the second-half, with many Scorpions fans feeling their team's chance of a rare win had faded. Ryan McDonald powered over the line as parity was restored, before Ben Williams' force clattered the visitors into a six-point lead.

Scorpions came roaring back, however, with a 40-20 from talisman Emanuel leading to the team's third try. Jack Pring broke through the Skolars backbone to the delight of an increasingly vocal home crowd.

With the scores level and the game edging towards its conclusion, a fantastic drop-goal settled the contest. Scorpions fans haven't seen too many one-pointers in the club's history, but few will forget Emanuelli's stunning effort on 76 minutes.

At Neath, Blackwood and Maesteg, Scorpions fans have endured eleven away defeats on the spin and waited well over one year for a home win. On Sunday, at the famous Cardiff Arms Park, the waiting came to an end.
