New RL show set for airwaves as club announce GTFM link-up

GTFM is to become the official radio station of the South Wales Scorpions for 2015, with a new rugby league show set for broadcast on the airwaves later in the year. 

Following the club's latest change of venue, a promising link-up with the Rhondda Cynon Taf station has been announced.

The new partnership was outlined by station bosses and the club on the air on Thursday afternoon.

GTFM's logo will feature on the Scorpions' jerseys, in a move the club will hope will give rugby league a much-needed shot in the arm locally.

As part of the partnership, a dedicated rugby league radio programme will launch on GTFM later in the year - possibly from May onwards.

Presently, Alun Jones - Pontypridd RFC's Supporters Club Secretary - hosts a Friday evening show about the Welsh Premiership club; and it was suggested the new league show would occupy that slot once the union campaign comes to an end.

The station, first established in 2002, regularly offers a platform to local sport, and the club now have an excellent opportunity to further promote RL to its listeners in Pontypridd, surrounding areas of RCT and further afield.

When the new show launches, it'd be great if long-standing (and long-suffering!) RL fans across South Wales make every effort to help the programme become a success.

How many people listen to this station on say a weekly or monthly basis?

I think there is quite a few lew i know its a very popular radio station around the rhondda valleys and up aberdare way which is what we need to be advertising in for the season

Officially, through the proper polls that these radio people do, it's the most listened to station in Pontypridd (Radio 1 is second) and among the market leaders in the rest of RCT. The Ponty Rugby Show is very popular and we'll be joining them before their season ends and taking over after that. Fan contributions as studio guests are very welcome.

Good thing about this, bar everything you've already read, is that in previous radio partnerships we've had to pay for ads and I don't think they've been overly effective. We don't have to pay a thing this time round.

It sounds positive, though I do have some thoughts on marketing the club as "the other sort of rubgy" in South Wales and by taking that slot this may be overly emphasised.

I guess at the end of the day it's (free?) publicity though so do not knock it.
