The Joy of Six? Play Off Fixtures Confirmed

The next six rounds of the Championship will determine whether the season has been a success for many of the teams. In the promotion pools the season will come to an abrupt end for those that fail to reach finish in the top two of the mini-leagues and the relegation pool is about not finishing last. Will Worcester finish top? Can Bees escape again? We have the full fixture list for the play offs.

Love them or loath them the play offs will ensure that the final weeks of the Championship are exciting. Worcester start as firm favourites for promotion and Bees the most likely to face the drop to Division One but you only need to look at the fortunes of Coventry and Bristol in last season’s fixtures to see that anything can happen.

London Welsh start and finish their play off campaign against Nottingham with Worcester and Bristol completing the line-up in Pool A.

The Yorkshire teams are both placed in Pool B with Pirates having to make two 750 mile round trips to fulfil these away fixtures.  Bedford’s second place in the league gives them top seeding in this group.

For the bottom four (Bees, Esher, Moseley and Plymouth) failure at this stage means automatic relegation to National League One and a huge drop in RFU funding. Bees were in the same position in 2009/10 and turned their season around in the final six weeks. Will their previous experience help them do the same this time?

According to the Notts site, "Word has it that our play off visit to ODP will be on Sky" and "LW play-off is expected to be on Saturday 12th March at noon thanks to the power of Sky."

Gee thanks, fixture-fixers, that's a performance of Magic Flute I'll have to miss (or miss a key match) and a possibly overnighter in Bristol if I am to be tucked up in bed before midnight. And a lunchless midday match on another fixture.

My girth can possibly survive the latter but who thought up 7.45 p.m. on a Friday evening?

Publicising this dog's dinner will be important if the players are to have more than a cricket net as spectators.

So they have moved the finals to Saturdays?

Originally scheduled for Wednesdays 18th and 25th May.

Presumably no Sky coverage on those new dates?

Oddly enough I misquoted that in exactly the same way earlier. It was pointed out that it actually says 'Now it starts to get serious'.

So when does it finally get really serious? Have the games since September been just a bit of fun? Did we not take the cup seriously?

Confirmed by RFU press release as:


• final May 11 & 18 - the team with the best playing record in Stage 2 will have the choice of whether to be at home for the first leg or the second leg of the Championship final

Also shows our away match against Notts as being on SATURDAY 16th not Sunday as advertised by Nottingham and LW.

Now it starts to get serious?

Just so we all know:
* the 1st ranked team in each pool will start the Play-Offs with three points, the 2nd two, the 3rd one and the 4th none

* 4 points for a win, 2 for a draw, 1 bonus point for either a) scoring 4 or more tries or b) losing by 7 points or less

* after 6 pool matches, top 2 teams from Pools A & B progress to semi final and then the winners to the final

so we start 1 point behind Worcester and respectively 1 and 2 points ahead of Nottingham and Bristol. The rest is up to the team. These brought forward points could be crucial

So on the last day of the league 2 stage phase of the competition, something makes sense?

I never fully believed that it was a Sunday game that weekend when all finished on a Saturday last season.

Notts County also at home that day with a 3pm ko. Could get confusing on the pitch!
