Mike Denbee Joins London Welsh

By Dragons' Den
April 30 2011

The first confirmed new signing of 2011/12 is back row Mike Denbee. Mike joins Welsh after a season at Birmingham and Solihull where, in January 2011, he was made captain.

The squad for 2011/12 starts to take shape with back row Mike Denbee the first confirmed new signing. The 26 year old has won honours with England Students and England Counties and spent a season in Spain before moving to Bees for 2010/11. Mike played for Plymouth Albion in 2008 and was voted Young Player of the Year the same season.

London Welsh Head Coach Phil Greening welcomes the new signing:  "Mike is a typical rugged West Country Back Row Player. If I played against him in my time he would have irritated me no end. Thats what a Back Row is all about, I am looking forward to working with him and certainly feel he can go further by playing in the Premiership hopefully with London Welsh."

Bloody good signing I say.
All the best Mike but not against Albion(Sm22)
Remember seeing him be creamed by Dragons defence at Old Deer Park before I moved to New Zealand in the last game of the season. The trip home was not so clear.
Anyway a good signing

This week's Rugby Times suggests that Jon Fisher will be joining on a permanent basis next season, and will be joined by Doncaster's former Bath No.8 Ed Jackson, with whom we were linked in the winter. And England 7s winger Dan Norton, who scored four tries against us for Moseley at Esher two years ago today, is rumoured to be joining from Bristol - presumably a straight replacement for Josh.

Was rumoured that we were trying to sign Mark Bright, Redruth's captain but I guess it didn't come off. Good job really as I enjoy my vists to Redruth too much to upset them by nicking a player!

We seem to have struggled to settle on a regular number 8 this season, injuries haven't helped.

Yes, those 10 minute breaks Epi needs to fix his weary bones have really upset us!

Good to hear that we can still attract signings of this calibre.

Hope we can hold onto some of the key personnel from this season, also.

And some of the key supporters! (How can we sign some more of those?)

He's signed for Bedford.

As has other LI loan player Jamie Lennard.

PS - Mark, stop talking to yourself!

I notice that Mike Denbee is represented by an agent. Is this par for players at Championship level or is it a growing trend? I hope rugby does not get soiled by the same capers as happen in pro football.

Most if not all pro players have agents now.

Feared so - I hope all concerned realise that if the sharks take 10$ or whatever, that's a deadweight on the business model of Championship rugby. I just hope we don't start getting transfer fees, with all the skulduggery involved. Can anyone cast light on roughly what terms these agents charge?

Transfer fees are already in the game. If a club signs a player who is contracted to another then some kind of compensation would be paid in the professional game.
