London Welsh v Doncaster Preview

By Mark W-J
February 1 2012

Following Sunday’s fixtures we now know which teams will be in the promotion play-offs, and which four will be fighting to avoid relegation.  Leaders Bristol have confirmed a top four finish and if results go their way this weekend they could guarantee top spot in the league table with two rounds still to play, while London Welsh’s quest for a top four place looks set to go to the final weekend.

This Saturday we entertain 7th-placed Doncaster at ODP (kick-off 2pm). The Knights have been solidly mid-table since late September, following defeats in the opening two rounds to Bristol and Pirates, the teams who currently occupy the top two places in the table, and while they’ve since established themselves in the top eight they’ve never really threatened to break into the top four. They beat Esher last weekend and their home wins over Bedford and Pirates suggest that they’re a match for the best teams in the league in their day, yet in December they lost at both Plymouth and Moseley either side of a 25-20 win at London Scottish. We won 21-10 at Castle Park in November thanks to second-half tries from Simon Whatling and Edd Thrower, Donny’s points including the first of four penalty tries that Welsh have conceded this season, while we also received three yellow cards and finished the game with two props in the bin.

Last season Welsh completed the first home-and-away double in the series since Doncaster won promotion to level two in 2005. The first meeting was a 27-27 draw at ODP, with Welsh claiming a try-bonus courtesy of Tim Holgate’s last-minute touchdown, although Lee Cholewa was unable to add the conversion which would have won the game, while in the corresponding fixture two seasons ago, despite having dispatched Bedford and the Pirates in our last two home games, we were comfortably beaten 20-9 as the wheels started to fall off the Saudex bandwagon. Most of the damage on the field that afternoon was inflicted by Matt Williams, who moved to Bristol in the summer, although a fairly muscular centre pairing of Bevon Armitage and Hudson Tonga’uiha created havoc in the home defence which the young winger was quick to exploit.

This has been an up-and-down season for Doncaster, with last Saturday’s win at Esher being only the second time that they’ve recorded back-to-back victories. They did manage four in a row in the early autumn, although that run of fixtures included home games against Moseley, London Scottish and Plymouth Albion, who have managed only three away wins between them all season - including, of course, Moseley’s win at ODP on New Year’s Eve. Their top scorer is Irish full-back David McIlwaine, who joined from Ulster in the summer, with 112, although former Pirates centre/ flanker Tom Luke has chipped-in with a further 67 points, while leading try-scorer is another summer signing from Ireland, ex-Leinster winger Michael Keating, with nine. Scottish winger/ full-back Dougie Flockhart scored 26 points against his former club last weekend, while erstwhile London Welsh full-back/ fly-half Mike Whitehead also returned to action after three months out; in his absence 39 year-old coach Brett Davey had to name himself on the bench for the game at London Scottish in December - am I getting older, or are the coaches getting younger?

Davey explained on the club’s website that he’s aiming to “play attractive rugby in a non-English style which is forwards-led, but where the forwards are capable of attacking all over the park.” This should be of interest to the London Welsh defensive masterminds, as of the 32 tries we’ve conceded this season only half have been scored by the opposing backs, the lowest proportion in the division, with 12 attributed directly to the forwards and four penalty tries awarded at scrums. The Pirates fans were very impressed with their team’s ability to snuff-out our attacking threat at source - many believed that it was their team’s best all-round performance of the season - but there’s a concern amongst the Welsh support that we’re far too predictable in the way that we build our attack in a series of pre-ordained plays, a fact possibly borne out by the drop-off in try scoring as the season has progressed and opposition coaches have become wise to our methods.

With just three rounds of fixtures left in the regular season (Doncaster have a rearranged game at Nottingham following a last-minute postponement a fortnight ago) it’s still all to play for at both ends of the table. Esher entertain both London Scottish and Plymouth Albion in their quest for victories; each win equates to one point carried-forward to the play-offs, so they’re currently scheduled to start at least four points adrift of the other three clubs in Pool C. Pirates still have to face Bristol and Rotherham, while Bedford’s last three games are all against clubs in the bottom half; after Saturday’s game we face a short journey round the corner to face London Scottish before finishing at home to in-form Leeds. The top eight and bottom four may be clear-cut, but the leagues within the league are as exciting as ever.

A final thought goes to Doncaster scrum-half Lee Audis who, as of the last reports two weeks ago had yet to regain consciousness following a car crash in late-November. We complain about the performances on the pitch and the nature in which our club is being run, but news like this puts our problems into perspective.

The Chippenham RFC site says of Lee (now located in the Frenchay area of Bristol):

"Lee is making small strides in his recovery. He is now more conscious and giving the beady eye to his visitors. It's still at the early stages and lots more small steps to come but his doctors are quite pleased. Knowing Lee I'm sure he's more comfortable with no so many northern accents around him." This is more promising. Our thoughts should be with him. his family and friends. Having been in an Intensive Care ward for head injuries and people in comas, though I was not there for either reason, I know how good the care staff can be.

Anyone know if there is any chance that this might be called off due to frozen pitch?

If so when do they inspect pitch given Doncaster have a long way to travel?

Any news welcome.

According to the official LW website there will be a pitch inspection today at 4pm. That doesn't IMO mean it won't still be called off tomorrow. Hope that it is played but what is of paramount importance is player safety. PADDYTAF. (Sm60)(Sm128)

May depend on how much grass cover has appeared in the last couple of milder weeks ??

Bristol, Rotherham and Bedford have already called off their home fixtures this weekend.

The 4 o/c inspection must be to meet requirement to make an assessment before the Doncaster team set out.

I could be wrong but IMO this game will be called off tomorrow. The temperature tonight is going to be well below freezing and will not rise above 2 degrees tomorrow.

We have had this situation in the past whereby some official has deemed the pitch safe to play only for the away team travelling down to ODP and then being told sorry the game is off.

If all of the other games have been postponed then there must be a real chance that the likely hood of any of those pitches being safe to play rugby being less than nil.

I really do hope this game is played. However, if i was coming from Doncaster and was then told tomorrow the game was off i would be nothing short of being bl**dy annoyed. Let's hope this official who ever he is does know what he is talking about. PADDYTAF. (Sm55)confused smiley

Donny had the same at Nottingham a few weeks back. Told by an RFU Official the pitch was probably going to be okay but on match day it clearly wasnt. I was in Richmond at lunchtime and the ground in the area I walked (no more than half a mile from ODP) was frozen hard. Odds must be no game. But with Donny already scheduled to play their delayed game at Notts next weekend, you can see why LW would want to try and get it to happen this.

If they make Donny travel, who picks up Donny costs if the game is then off?

Donny are responsible for their costs as it looks as if LW have followed the rules by getting the pitch inspected before they travel. A ref can make a decision any time until 11am tomorrow after which the captains decide.

Do wonder what the pitch was like at 2pm today as that's probably a better guide to the likely conditions at ko time tomorrow.

Wilbers If LONDON WELSH are responsible for the appointment of the RFU official inspecting the pitch and he deems it playable then revokes his decision the following day then either LONDON WELSH or the RFU should foot the bill for Donnys travelling expenses. This should not be born by Doncaster, but my bet is you will have to pay which is completely wrong. PADDYTAF. thumbs upthumbs up

From the club office:

London Welsh followed the pitch inspection procedure required by the RFU.
The pitch was inspected at 4pm and was passed playable by an RFU referee.
The referee is required to take into account the condition of the pitch when the inspection takes place, visiting teams travel plan and also the predicted weather forecast
Unless there is a big deterioration in the weather the game should go ahead.

My instinct for what it is worth, living in Acton W3, is that by kick-off several hours of nice sunshine should have made the top level playable. The snow will not come until late afternoon, I hope, and the journey back to Donny might not be fun (especially if nursing a defeat) but the match could be played in a chilly but possibly not biting cold. Wind would make it very unpleasant. The real question is whether below the immediate surface the ground is rock hard due to days of penetrating frost. I don't think there has been, but the referee must surely not be taking risks with player safety.

Over the years I've seen LW criticised for making decisions too early, too late and also when we had the most torrential downpour half hour before ko turning the pitch from very playable into a pond! It's the risk of a winter sport and it is not only the away team that loses money from a postponement.

Recently Doncaster pulled out of their away game at Nottingham game minutes before ko due to icy patches in the deadball area (as they are fully entitled to do according to the rules). My main sympathies are always for the away supporters that either spend time travelling or have wasted train tickets/hotel costs etc when a game is postponed.

The trouble is we always remember the games that are called off and not the ones that go ahead against the odds when there were pre-match doubts about the pitch conditions!

Pitch covers are not always the answer. Esher, Bedford, Rotherham (and possibly others) all had their pitches covered this week and all failed inspections by a referee.

Finally, some futher clarification from the club office:

On pitch conditions -

The home club are required to do all they can to make the pitch playable.
The home club are not involved in anyway with in decision making process as to whether the pitch is playable or not.

On the match day -

If the match referee feels on when he arrives at the ground that there may be some doubt about the condition of the pitch the team captains are required to decide whether it is playable.
If the captains can not come to an agreement the ref will decide.

Interestingly, this site (which gives a more optimistic forecast for W3 barely 4 miles away by the crow) suggests cloud cover now @20% but I am only seeing clear blue sky right now where I am, so if the weak sun can just warm the grass, all to the good, but if cloud cover builds by 11 am that goes out of the window and kick off will be at or about zero or worse. Roads back to Doncaster could be seriously blizzardly, and I'm not sure even trains back won't be held up. I'm looking forward to lunch in the Pagoda room but have doubts any match will follow - though as Nigel says we have often been surprised.

I telephoned the club bar at 10.20 and was told that the pitch was frozen. I was further told that the two Captains will decide today if the game can still go ahead.

Although a decision was made yesterday it would have been nice to know if the game was still definitely on. Just leaving the webpage as game on doesn't confirm the situation if you have to leave at least 2 hours before k/o.

How difficult would it have been to confirm this morning that nothing had changed and please still turn up. I won't be at the game today. PADDYTAF.

Sadly, while LW have done everything by the book, the decision of the RFU-appointed official at 4pm yesterday has left us looking like a bunch of Charlies. How he ever declared the pitch playable will forever mystify everyone who lives within 60 miles of Richmond. The fact that the game at Esher and the race meeting at Sandown were both postponed 24 hours in advance yet the pitch at ODP was deemed fit should surely have been questioned by someone at Twickenham. It's an embarrassment for the club, but unusually it's not one of our own making.

Re: London Welsh v Doncaster Preview
Posted by: DanFW3 (IP Logged)

The Doncaster coach (bus) had not arrived as at 12.15. Had they been there a bit longer they might have gone on the pitch and given it more of a try out and become more comfortable with it. In racing terms, I would have classed it Firm rather than Good to Firm, but not Firm to Hard. It was rather like a late summer pitch before the first autumn rains with a soft but thin cover of turf.

The ref tried out a scrum and thought again about forward safety in the light of Donny reluctance to play. And decided on the balance to call it off. The club has absolutely nothing to be blamed for, and I cannot see what other messages the club could have put out except "Game on, but keeping checking the website."

Nice lunch upstairs in the club house, but that's little compensation for no play. Rematch will possibly be midweek at a ground other than ours, so we lose out in more ways than this. But the crowd today would have been pitiful had the match proceeded given the uncertainty and cold, and slightly lacking in atmosphere, so perhaps there is some benefit from all this.

I cannot believe the amount of people on here who are blaming London Welsh. Shame on you for jumping to conclusions.(Sm102)

We have done NOTHING to be embarrassed about. There should be no 'apology' forthcoming.

Procedures were followed by LW. It was up to Doncaster if they wanted to play the match. They, like at Rotherham, decided not to play. I'm not blaming them but their criteria for determining whether a pitch is playable appears to be different to that of LW and Roth and several match officials.

Also, wasn't there a match which went ahead last year when all others in the area didn't?

I despair. I'm glad I wasn't able to make it today as if I had, some of you would have been feeling the sharp side of my tongue.

Just for clarity and to stop everyone guessing the Championship protocol for calling off games is quite straightforward.

On match day < 3 hours befor kick off the captains decide if they want to proceed. If they both say yes the ref will commence the game although he has the option to abandon at any time once kicked off.

If both say no .......he will not interfere with the decision.

If one says yes and one says no then the ref has to either say its playable or its not. The later is easy...game off however if he says it is playable then the team that dont want to play can still refuse but then its referred back to the RFU on Monday morning who may award the game to the team who wanted to play. The championship has a different protocol to the Premiership

The ref could not make any decision after 11.00am until both captains had made theirs.Either way he will be unpopular with one team or the other.......just the same as when he makes any decision in a match !!!

Great timing, NOT! The kick-off of Wales v Scotland is at 3 p.m. so the two matches overlap. No chance of a 1.00 p.m. kick-off is there? That way we could have as good a home crowd, what with London Scottish down the road, as for an England v Wales game.

From Nottingham's website:

"Following the postponement of every fixture in the RFU Championship at the weekend, the entire round of action has been rearranged for this week with Nottingham Rugby now scheduled to meet Leeds at Meadow Lane on Sunday, February 12 (3pm kick off).
For the Green and White this means that the rescheduled Leeds Carnegie game will replace Nottingham’s other weather affected match against Doncaster. The Round 18 Knights game will now be postponed until Wednesday, February 15 (7.45pm kick-off).
One of the major factors behind this decision is that London Welsh doesn’t have floodlights and by moving the Nottingham versus Doncaster game prevents a mid-week afternoon game, which will only disadvantage both sets of supporters and hurt the host club significantly.
Commenting on the decision Nottingham Rugby chief executive Simon Beatham said: “Nobody wants to have to play a game midweek. Having it played in the middle of the day means that fans just can’t get there.
"We were consulted on the plan, we considered it from all sides and from our fans perspective we still have the matches being played on the same dates at the same time. Doncaster contacted us and from their fans’ perspective, who bearing in mind had made the journey to Nottingham and London Welsh for the original games, they felt it gave them the opportunity to see both rescheduled games and so this was their preferred option and we supported this.”
Purchased tickets can be used at the respective rescheduled fixture and refunds can be claimed up to 5pm on the last working day before the match. Please contact the office on 0115 9070070 for further details."

Indeed and it's good to see. Just a great shame, as DanFW3 pointed out that we havent opted to move the game to a 1300 kick off, as 1400 is not set in stone.

It's curious there was time for DONCASTER to sound their supporters which match they wanted played this weekend, but not for WELSH to point out the clash with a WALES international in what may be a WALES grand slam year! And why not play on the Saturday with a 2pm kick off?

Oh dear, the forecast for Saturday at 2pm is -4degrees. Here we go again! Perhaps ODP will acquire a reputation as a restaurant and bar with a view of an empty rugby pitch attached. Soon the Doncaster team coach driver will know his way here blindfold, which should make the M1 even less safe than it already is.

I'm sure everyone wants the earliest correct decision possible but it is still down to the ref that carries out the pitch inspection. Local BBC forecast wasn't as bad as they had been predicting so you never know....

I can accept the need for squad rotation but why make changes when we didn't play last Saturday and are scheduled to meet the same opponents?

Davies at 10 and Thrower at 15 promised a different style of attack to one we would get from the above, yet within a week (without it even being tried) we go back to the more usual line-up.

According to their website, Doncaster have told the RFU that they are prepared to have this game rescheduled for Tues 21st Feb. Otherwise it would have to be the following week as they play Nottingham this Weds, Rotherham on Saturday (on Sky) and Bristol on Fri 24th.

Down to the RFU to get a date and time agreed. Would they allow us an afternoon ko or will we have to rent Sunbury or RAG for an evening game?

Can we now start complaining about the official/club/captains who rushed to the decision to cancel today's game

Re: London Welsh v Doncaster Preview
Posted by: nld (IP Logged)
Date: 11/02/2012 13:46

Following on from my post above, I'm hearing that whilst Donny want the game on the Tues this would cause us problems with the short turnaround after our match at LS on the Sunday. Therefore we have a preference for the Weds if the game has to be played that week. The RFU have expressed a desire for all postponed games to played by the 25th but just two days between matches must bring some risks to player welfare. Apparently the ideal situation for both clubs would be permission to play on Weds 29th Feb or Sat 3rd March. If midweek then the RFU have previously agreed to allow 2pm ko for midweek league games at ODP but that's not a 100% guarantee they'll allow it this time!

Hopefully a decision by the RFU early in the coming week will allow both clubs and their supporters to make plans.

Why is all the talk of when Doncaster want to play the re-arranged fixture? Surely we get some say in the date? Paeticularly when last week it was Doncaster who elected not to play after LW and the Ref had deemed the pitch OK in the morning....Why should we have to play a game on a mid-week afternoon, and miss out on supporters, income etc becuase the oposition didnt like the cold last week....??!?!?!!?

Re: London Welsh v Doncaster Preview
Posted by: nld (IP Logged)
Date: 11/02/2012 14:06

I understand that the RFU ultimately decide the date with representations made by both teams. Whether Donny's views on a date have any influence is down to the Competitions Committee.

I believe that the four clubs involved with the games still to be arranged (LW, Doncaster, Nottingham and Leeds) have all made their views known to the RFU. It is just a matter of waiting for the RFU to let everyone know their decision!

Hopefully in the next day or two they'll come up with something acceptable but this is the RFU....

Re: London Welsh v Doncaster Preview

The fact that neither LW or Doncaster have announced this new date suggests that discussions may be ongoing despite the RFU releasing the date.

Less than 5 days notice of an afternoon fixture is hardly fair on supporters and the players will have less than 48hrs recovery after the LS match. Even if the game was played on Tues eve at a ground with floodlights then it would give an extra 5hrs or so for the team to get over the LS fixture and allow a few more supporters to make the game.

Sensibly, admission should be free, likewise stand seats, beer and soft drinks on a 2 for 1 offer between 1 and 1.30, and even better would be a free 3-course lunch upstairs (not lamb shank and mash, please). A huge publicity drive should begin right now as every extra 100 in the crowd can add atmosphere. Are local schools still on half-term?

As a matter of interest what is the lowest home gate we've ever scored for a league home fixture? The weather forecast is a 70% chance of 'precipitation' over the previous 24 hours or more but temperatures well clear of zero. We shall win, have no doubt of it, and against Leeds too, ending the first stage on an up.

As the club does not have a marketing team, it is the more important to ensure those tools that are used are timely and accurate. If the advertising is wrong then it loses its impact and value and evidently could prove to be counter-productive.

The same with the website - the pop-ups are good for communicating certain information, but sadly behind that we have multiple examples of out of date information on the front page and other examples further in.

Keeping the signage at ODP and the website up to date should not be onerous tasks.

Should the sub bench usually have 4 forwards and 3 backs or 5 and 2? I think I'd rather see the latter. After all, the backs just stand round watching the heavies do all the muscles work whilst preening their locks. A forward-heavy sub bench puts the frighteners on the oppo. Of course you have to have them to field them!

I'm feeling good about this match.

Millennium, old chap. No wonder you missed it.

Good game for Joe, although I thought him a tad lucky to be awarded MoM before he'd scored a try.

Good also to see Simon Whatling back, playing well, and Purdy had a good match in an unfamiliar position (6).

After our scrum problems of a couple of months back, we mullahed Donnie today. Was it 3 against the head? Plus more than our fair share of penalties. Such a contrast to the woes of last Sunday.

Irish scrum half Paul Hodgson is going to Worcester so they were probably there to see if Moates can step up to a full London Irish squad member.

On yesterdays showing I would say yes .He made quite a few breaks including the "try of the match from 60M breaking numerous tackle to score under the posts ...magic. Mind you behind the Welsh pack most srumhalfs would have been very happy !(Sm60)
