A short history of Ampthill Rugby Club from 1881 to the present day

In the small Bedfordshire town of Ampthill, the sound of rugby first echoed in 1881, when local lads gathered to try their hand at the sport. Those early matches were rough, spirited affairs, played on makeshift pitches, with the town’s identity already being stitched together by the game.

But as decades passed and war changed everything, rugby in Ampthill faded from view. It wasn’t until after World War II, in the 1950s, that the town’s passion for the game was reborn. Local enthusiasts banded together, and by 1959, Ampthill & District Rugby Club was officially founded, determined to build something lasting. 

At first, the players had no real home. They borrowed pitches in Ampthill Park and later on Station Road, changing in sheds or behind village halls. Then came a turning point: in 1958, the club scraped together enough to buy three acres of land at Dillingham Park for £300. The ground wasn’t fit to play on right away, but it was theirs — a foundation for the future. Over the years, more land was added, and eventually, a modest clubhouse rose up in 1980, later expanded as the club grew. 

The heartbeat of Ampthill, though, was always its people. In 1971, a Cub Scout leader asked if the club might help his troop earn their sports badge. That simple request sparked a mini and youth section, one of the first of its kind in England. What began with a handful of boys grew into hundreds of children running out in maroon and gold, soon joined by girls’ teams as well. For many families, Saturdays at Dillingham Park became a tradition.

The club also had an unusual chapter in the 1970s and 80s, when hundreds of young American servicemen from nearby RAF Chicksands discovered rugby through Ampthill. Many had never even seen the sport before, yet within days they were pulling on boots, playing fiercely for the team nicknamed The Extras.

Step by step, Ampthill climbed the English rugby pyramid. Local titles led to regional triumphs, then to national success. Their breakthrough came in 2015, when they defeated Bishop’s Stortford in a promotion playoff, earning a place among the semi-professional elite. Just a few years later, in 2019, Ampthill were crowned champions of National League 1, sealing a dream promotion to the Championship — the second tier of English rugby.

Suddenly, a club that had once struggled to field sides was welcoming giants like Newcastle Falcons and Saracens to Dillingham Park. The crowds swelled, the town buzzed, and the club published a book — From Tanqueray to the Championship — telling how a post-war dream in a hotel lounge had become a reality on the national stage. 

Even the pandemic, which cut short their debut Championship season, couldn’t dim Ampthill’s pride. They finished a remarkable fifth, proof that their spirit belonged at this level.

Today, Ampthill Rugby Club is a true community hub: hundreds of children, dozens of senior players, women’s and girls’ teams, veterans and newcomers all sharing the same pitches. A recent campaign raised funds to build dedicated facilities for their growing women’s squads — just the latest step in making sure rugby in Ampthill is for everyone.

From humble beginnings to hosting professional giants, Ampthill’s story is one of perseverance, community, and ambition. And as the maroon and gold run out at Dillingham Park each weekend, they carry with them not just the hopes of a town, but the legacy of everyone who believed rugby could thrive here.
