Coventry Left to Rue Late Tries as Exeter Edge Butts Park Thriller

Coventry RFC’s pre-season preparations suffered a narrow setback on Saturday as Exeter Chiefs snatched a 40–35 victory at Butts Park Arena, despite a performance full of enterprise and heart from the home side.

The Blue-and-Whites started brightly, the pack asserting itself in the early exchanges. A powerful rolling maul allowed Aristot Benz-Salomon to crash over for the opening score, and when Morgan Adderly-Jones dotted down under the posts after Sam Maunder’s clever grubber, the home support sensed an upset might be on the cards.

Exeter, however, brought plenty of bite, and their young side hit back with tries of their own to level matters at 14–14 by half-time.

Coventry came out after the break with renewed purpose. Hooker Suva Ma’asi powered over to reclaim the lead, while scrum-half Dan Green showed sharp instincts with a quick tap-and-go score. When replacement Josh Barton added another try, Butts Park rocked with noise and Coventry looked to be pulling clear.

But Exeter had other ideas. As legs tired, the visitors found space out wide, and young flyer Sol Moody produced a devastating second-half hat-trick. His final try, deep into the closing stages, proved the dagger blow, giving the Chiefs a five-point cushion that Coventry, for all their endeavour, could not overturn.

Head coach Alex Rae admitted the defeat was “a tough one to take” but struck a positive tone:

“We showed plenty of character and quality against a very sharp Exeter side. There are things we need to tighten up, but as a workout it was exactly what we needed. We’ll learn from it.”

 

Looking Ahead

For all the sting of defeat, Coventry fans left Butts Park with reasons to be optimistic. The maul remains a formidable weapon, young backs like Adderly-Jones continue to grow in confidence, and the team created tries through invention as well as power.

Defensive lapses late on will be a focus in training over the next fortnight, especially with the trip to Sixways looming. Tightening up in those final 20 minutes — when Exeter found most of their joy — will be crucial if Coventry are to turn competitive performances into winning ones.

The message from both players and fans was clear: the building blocks are there. With more polish and discipline, this Coventry side has every chance of delivering an exciting campaign.
