Quins Ladies Take The Navy by Storm

(Harlequin Ladies 34 – Navy Ladies 0) Saturday morning saw the Harlequin Ladies face the Navy, for the Sue Moloney Memorial Cup game, in memory of their team-mate who died from meningitis two years ago, writes Jo Everett.

With the Navy’s kick-off failing to make ten, the MKI-sponsored Quins Ladies were to put in at the first scrum. The Navy won the ball against the head, proving the strength in their forwards’ game. Despite this strength, Quins were to dominate possession and quickly opened the scoring with prop, Louise Clancy, powering through the Navy defence. The Harlequins gained an additional advantage when one of the Navy pack received a yellow card, and more tries followed for Alex Burbidge, Harriet Slynn and Anna McLaughlin. When another Navy forward was sent off for stamping in the ruck, Quins were to retain their advantage for the whole game.

Despite this, the Navy fought back well in the second half, repeatedly testing the Harlequins defence. Quins kept the Navy from crossing the line, and thanks to their strong running game and close-support play, two more tries followed for Quins, with Burbidge and McLaughlin both scoring for a second time. With Slynn’s two conversions taking the final score to 34-0, it was a well-earned victory for the Harlequin Ladies.

With over £150 raised for the Meningitis Research Fund, and the much-appreciated support from members of the Harlequins Supporters and Amateur Clubs, it was a memorable and successful day for the Harlequin Ladies.
