Supporters XV edged out by the truckers.

In their first run out of the new season the Yaks (the Saints Supporters XV) came up agonisingly short against Wincanton (the lorry people) in an entertaining encounter at the Obelisk Centre, Sunday afternoon.

The match started in bright sunshine but this soon made way for a heavy shower which resulted in your 'umble reporter (time-keeper and scorer) retreating to the bar for much needed sustenence. Upon my return I found that neither side had troubled the scorer but within a minute the Yaks scored their opening try of the season. I could tell you it was a blistering move a lá Rasperry Ripol or Glaws young find Marcel Marceau but the truth is, it was a scramble over the line following disarray in the Wincanton defence. The Yaks scored a further try in the first half (converted) whilst Wincanton replied with a solitary, solo, on his own type effort from a player who looked suspiciously like an Old Scout. Half time 12-5

All was looking good as the Yaks started where they had left off in the second half, scoring a further try. 17-5. Unfortunately, the Wincanton boys had other ideas. Four unanswered tries led to a score of 17-25 with only minutes left to play when the referee intervened. Sending a Wincanton player to the bin for 5 minutes for "excessively celebrating a try" the man in the blue sweat shirt offered the Yaks a life line.

Sadly, it was not to be. Wincanton crossed the white-wash once more to set an unassailable lead (17-30) even though their try scorer was again sent to the cooler for the same offence. With the two man advantage the Yaks gainfully attempted to get back into the game but two late tries (unconverted) were not quite good enough. Final score, Yaks 27- 30 Wincanton.

As always with these fixtures there was plenty of banter between the two teams, much laughter and a few beers after the game. Rugby, as always, was the winner.

P.S did I mention Beef was the ref?

(Terms and conditions apply. The names have been omitted to protect the innocent, the score I think is right, it definitely rained and there was some good rugby played)
