News: Eagles Lock heads for Saints

Northampton Saints today announced the signing of US Eagles forward Samu Manoa ahead of the 2011/12 season. Twenty-six-year-old Manoa stands at 6 feet 6 inches and weighs in at 122kgs. He has one international cap to his name, won against Georgia last November, but has played for the Eagles in a number of non-cap matches, including against Saracens in September 2010. He comes from Concord, California, and plays for San Francisco Golden Gate RFC, winning the National Super League Championships. Manoa, who can also play lock and in the back row, has also played club rugby in New Zealand and last October scored the winning try for the Eagles in their win over Tonga ‘A’, his ancestral home, and followed that up with a score against Argentina Jaguars five days later. Director of rugby Jim Mallinder says that while not many people may have heard of Manoa at the moment he had the potential to impress next season. “We have been impressed by what we have seen of Samu,” he said. “He is physical, has good ball skills and an outstanding turn of pace for a big man. He is also eager to make the most of his opportunity in England and wants to succeed in the Premiership. We’re looking forward to seeing what he can do in the Saints environment.”

The U.S. squad that went to Georgia wasn't exactly experimental, but it wasn't quite full strength either. He's on the fringes, but 50/50 as to whether he gets to face Artemiev down in Nelson...

I would hasten to bet that we're banking on him not going to the World Cup, and maybe see him as cover for Courtney in terms of power and bulk, as well as work-rate since he is a Sevens player.
Good signing, if he's anywhere near as good as Hayden Smith has been this season at Sarries, then I'll be happy with this signing. Welcome Samu!

Rumours would suggest that Dreyer, Powell, Geraghty, Downey and Reihana may also be leaving. The last three names there are huge losses if true, so lets hope the new signings can step up!

As I recall things - you're not "foreign" if you hold an EU passport, or from a country there's an EU agreement with - basically, South Africa and the Pacific islands.
IIRC John Leslie was a "foreign" player as he was a NZ passport holder, despite being capped for Scotland!

1. Your from the British Isles.. or
2. Your from the EU.. or
3. Your country has a trade agreement under Kolpack.. or
4. You can produce a relevant grandparent.. or
5. You live here for a while
So basically - the only foreign player in the entire AP is a Mongolian prop in the Newcastle academy.. or something like that
