viii - Im assuming when you say, 'this place' you are referring to the county - if its something to do with competitors with an 'uphill' finish , this suggests a race course - it cannt be Silverstone as you dont need stamina so Im going for Towcester Racecourse - no idea if it has any 'slopes' - Im assuming it does.

ii - "Aussie Rich" - isnt he the bloke that runs the Thomas a Becket pub? - Im assuming that something happened in 1164 with Thomas Becket - no idea about the reference to a Marina?

vi: Kettering? King Arthur and Lady of the Lake are the two locomotives at Wicksteed Park, and the town has previously been known for Worsted weaving and the manufacture of boots & shoes.

As for the rainwear I think that Aquascutum has a factory there.

Danetre - Daventry.

The danes planted a tree on what is now called Borough Hill. The red nosed innkeeper of Daintree is a line from said play and the town was garrison to royalist forces before the battle of Naseby (1645).

It is said that King Charles was visited by the ghost of Thomas Wenworth during this time. The ghost gave him advice that he could not win the forthcoming battle

iv: This is all to do with the Abington estate. Shakespeare's only granddaughter: Elizabeth, owned the Abington Manor (what is now the museum) for a while. She was the last of the line because she died childless.

Later on, the estate came into the possession of Lady Wantage - who presented the Manor and Abington Park to the Corporation of Northampton. Wantage Road is named in her honour and that is the address of the County Ground - where the Steelbacks play.

Finally, one of the Earls of Thomond owned Billing Hall. As far as I can tell, they never owned the Abington Estate - but when Billing Hall was demolished a window from it depicting the Thomond arms was installed in Abington Manor.

Sarge, do you know where Billing Hall was situated? - just curios as I didnt know such a place evr existed..

It was stormed by the militant bargees of the Nene collective in the great revolution of 1999 that established the Peoples Republic of Little Billing.

Clare was born in a cottage in Woodgate in the village of Helpston.

That cottage is now the HQ of the Clare Cottage Trust, and from its website I found that in 1817 John Clare worked as a lime-burner in Rutland - which is where he met his wife.

I think that leaves just i and vii to deduce, and I have no idea about either of them at the moment.

Yep just checked, they spent two seasons in the old Div Two. Promoted and end of 62/63 season they spent 63/64 and 64/65 in D2 before taking their brief spot with the big boys in 65/66.

Exactly St M - i was watching this with some amusement as they tracked down the answers from google link to another google link !!!

Google or no Google, still an excellent quiz - learnt a lot.

Likewise and I dont think Idve got the link - I never knew the hart in heraldry symbolised a royal forest though it does make sense

you have to be careful with heraldry - kings and a lot of yer major nobles in the middle ages onwards had not only a coat of arms but would also have a badge. The latter might be on their banners but also on the clothing of their retainers

For example Richard III would have born the royal arms of England 3 lions passant gardent - or on gules quatered with the lillies of france. but his badge was a boar.

Richard II to name another not so clever dick - had as his badge a white hart - hence a lot of pubs called that.

Sometimes if the badge was beast it was also incorporated in the arms as one of the supporters. Henry Tudors dragon badge was so incorporated by his successor Tudors. . But badges were not always beasts - They could be a knot , a sheaf of corn - or perhaps the best known the tudor rose.

PS. none of the above was googled i read it years ago in one of them book thingies - it has been processed and stored in a unique super computer called my brain. Although as it gets older access is not always gauranteed.

Of course questionmasters are all like Stephen Fry and know everything without resorting to search engines...

Chris - i do use wikipedia etc but only check on things i think i know - like I was going to ask a to question about which was the odd one out from a list of composers - the answer was going to be that X never wrote an opera.

But I thought i had better check it - and @#$%& me he did - so did loads of them - you would never have heard of the operas so obscure were they - and the only ones who didnt write an opera were also mostly obscure and unheard of.
