Victory over Leeds Tykes - The Fans View

"Smudger’s a happy bunny!" according to Maverick. And he’s not the only one. On the day that England become world champions, the Saints beat Leeds on the hallowed, if not a little wet FG turf.

Well today hasn't been too bad has it

Here follows a selection of your Saints related joy…..

The 70 or so minutes…..

Well today hasn't been too bad has it?  Maverick

Well done to all the team - and again BRUCE was fantastic - JH was passing quickly and mostly accurately - the forwards as a whole got in thier faces - drove them back and scrapped for ball.  SHANE - was superb - that try was the best of the day - anywhere in the world
and we're currently second   Well done to all concerned  Old Pete

Yes top performance all round there, good to see Tom Smith back. Well played Leeds for competing right up to the last minute.  James Simons-Boswell

Once we got into our stride there was some very good rugby played. Even when we copied the weather and eased up a bit in the second half, we stayed handily in control and snuffed out the threat of Tykes bonus points. Oddshapedballs

It was also good to have all the tries scored by backs and all of them being well constructed and taken. For me it was great to see Tucks back. Was his absence a factor in the two defeats?
Moment of the match was Grant, I think, sliding into the in-goal area just after Bruce scored his second try. It was one of those Corporal Jones moments. Perhaps he just likes the mud.  Laurie

Four tries down "B" block end of the terrace before half time, unheard of! Maverick

That first 10 minutes….

Great 70 minutes boys but could you do me a favour and come out for the first 10 so that my Dad doesn't get his opportunity to disappear into a slough of despair!   Claire Jones

Yes Claire, why is it that we seem to insist on giving our visitors a head start by not firing on all cylinders for the first 5 or 10 minutes of a game?  I know it's a very sporting thing to do but it doesn't do our blood pressure any good. And after the morning match yesterday the old arteries were fit to burst   MT

but all in all after a ten point start - we really came out with all guns firing today Old Pete

funny thing, sport.  shane was a complete liability until he got his try. after that, all smiles. broonie

The front row

major difference today - tam.  how we have needed a tight forward with the strength to stand up, not go to ground, and act as a focal point for the pack to drive .
with wally coming back, that will be another in afortnight's time, maybe , but as far as i know, jarjar, larry and ben don't play in the tight five forwards. broonie

Virtually the first time this season that we have relished the battle in the scrum - looking to take a scrummage for a free kick offence in opposition territory. And I'm sure Danny Boy was wanting another go at them at 14 - 10 when we and an injury took an age to come to the decision to let Shane kick the points.
The scrum was safe and secure and as a result we are able to talk more about our half backs than our back row. A top performance from little Johnny and the wee Drahm had time and space to control the show.  Oddshapedballs

Maybe not in the top 6, but good to see Robbie getting back to form. x block pete

Comments for MOTM

Little Johnny - he finally got a good platform from which to perform and the backs ran in 6 tries.
Wee Drahm - hardly wasted a scrap of possession; excellent in running the show.
Bruce - calm authority and (another) 2 tries.
Wee Tam - it can't be a coincidence that the scrum suddenly became a source of strength rather than a potential weakness.
Danny Boy - solid in everything he did, he really seemed to relish the contest.
Lionel - when hard yards were required, he provided them. Oddshapedballs

Same as Oddshapballs, how anyone can leave out Jonny Howard from their list I don't know!! John Rickerd

Mine would be in order of performance:
Johnny Howard for his best performance in a Saints shirt.
Tam for his presence and class. One of our best backs if he'd been born with a different shape.
Shane for all round control from unlikely beginnings.
Lionel because he played well and it's good to see him there.
Foxy for his tackling.
Bruce for his tries and assists but give others a go.  Laurie
