RUGBY Lions ended their season with a rousing win against Dings Crusaders to finish eighth in their first campaign in National League Three South. Lions, previously in National League Three North, began the match brightly, taking the lead with James Hawken’s penalty. Fine play by Rugby centre Matt Goode brought him an 11th-minute try converted by Hawken for 10-0. But Goode was then replaced

injured.

Lions had to struggle against a very experienced and uncompromising Dings side who were building up the pressure in Lions’ 22.

Dings’ pressure produced an Adam Westall penalty on 32 minutes, but Lions then dominated possession before half-time.

Rugby had a great start to the second half when Chris Murphy’s try was converted by Hawken for a 20-3 lead, but Dings pulled it back to 20-17 before two late tries gave Rugby the win.

Rugby Lions: tries Goode, Warner, Murphy, Reed; conversions Hawken (3); penalties Hawken; drop goal Warner.

Dings Crusaders: tries Wright-Hyder, Watkins; conversions Westall (2); penalty Westall.
