EIGHT-TRY Coventry eased through their first pre-season test in promising fashion with a 52-0 win at Stourbridge last night. Hosts Stourbridge, one division below Cov in National One, were on the back foot for large portions of the game and rugby director Phil Maynard was happy with his first look at his rebuilt squad in action. “I learned a lot and there were glimpses of what we are

capable of,” said Maynard.

“It highlighted that we have got a great deal of competition for places, particularly in the pack this year and it was a good work out.”

Fly-half George Cook claimed the opening try in the fourth minute and converted before then improving a Henno Venter score from a driving maul for 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Prop James Hall provided the only addition in a more even second period before Venter again and prop Rob Dugard stretched the score to 33-0 after 60 minutes ,

Chris Lewis adding two conversions.

Ollie Winter touched down a minute into the final quarter and was followed over the line by trial winger Simon Frewin and second row Louis McGowan, two of the tries converted by Tommy Hayes.

Good to see the guys get off to a roaring start in their first game of the season. Hope they can maintain their momentum and not get too full of themselves with this win.

Question......what is the elephant with the castle stand for, and does the Coventry team have a "Name" other than the Coventry Rugby Football Club."
Thanks, new fan and proud father (No.8)
Ken.
