Chris Lewis aiming to be centre of attention at Cov

NEW boy Chris Lewis has set his sights on proving to the Coventry public why he was brought to Butts Park Arena in the summer. The 22-year-old started doing just that last Friday’s first game of the season when he scored a try on his debut and put in a solid display at inside centre. But he admits he arrives with Phil Maynard’s men as something of an unknown quantity having never played

rugby before.

The powerful midfielder comes in under the radar having played all of his competitive games for Cambridge University after a serious knee injury deprived him of the opportunity to play in national age group trials where most promising youngsters are picked up.

Which meant the 21-12 win over Rotherham has the first time he has appeared in anything other than student rugby – and the difference became immediately apparent.

But the double Blue, who graduated with a degree in History and Management Studies, acquitted himself well.

“I was a bit nervous pulling the shirt on for the first time with all the tradition and history behind it,” Lewis admitted.

“It was very important to me to step up and prove why I am at the club and why they picked me.

“Not many people know me here so I want to try and establish myself and get hold of the 12 shirt.

“And scoring the try was a nice moment. It wasn’t planned I was just in the right place at the right time.

“Tommy [Hayes] did all the hard work and I took the glory, it was a nice moment in my first match.”

The score, secured after Hayes made a break through midfield and Lewis appeared on his shoulder to barrel under the posts, could not have been better timed.

The hosts had made a sluggish start in their season opener and were trailing 5-0 when Lewis came up good.
