RUGBY LIONS powered their way to a first win of the season as they saw off the Preston Grasshoppers with a spirited display. Jeff Gregson signalled the Lions’ intent inside the first minute when he bulldozed his way through for a try, which Lloyd Warner converted. Preston retaliated through the boot of Mark Edwards, and the Lions held firm under some intense pressure shortly after.

Gregson then scored again before the interval and Warner once again kicked the conversion as Lions went in 17-3 ahead.

And Gregson grabbed his third of the match after the re-start, when he displayed a wonderful pair of hands to go over with 46 minutes gone.

Richard Morton pulled a try back for the Grasshoppers following another spate of intense pressure, and they looked to be within touching distance of a spectacular comeback when Darren Wilson’s breakaway made it 22-17. But Gregson capped off a fine personal performance with his fourth try in the final minute to seal a bonus point.
