Brenton back to lift Cov

CAPTAIN Arthur Brenton could put his stuttering start to his Coventry career behind him at Doncaster this weekend. The athletic lock has recovered from the neck injury that has kept him out of the last three matches and will challenge Sam Herrington and Louis McGowan for a starting berth at Castle Park.
And rugby director Phil Maynard is pleased the former Plymouth and Bedford forward is available again having missed his guiding hand in last Friday’s galling loss to Moseley.
Indeed Brenton has not played since the heavy defeat at Goldington Road in the second game of the season.
“Arthur is feeling fit and is raring to go. He really is champing at the bit,” Maynard said.
“By his own admission, he has not been 100 per cent fit so he is keen to get back into it and really have an influence on proceedings.”
Maynard feels the 28-year-old’s absence was most keenly felt in last week’s local derby when Coventry had an 11-point lead going into the 75th minute but still lost.
While the controversy surrounding the end of that game has been put to bed, what lingers with Maynard is his team’s failure to convert a winning position into something tangible.
“To be fair, we have missed him,” Maynard continued.
“He brings a lot of experience which I felt we lacked in the last four minutes against Moseley.
“We ended that game with two young half backs and a No 8 who is very good but who has only played a couple of times in this country.
“With Arthur in the side, we might have managed the closing stages a little bit better and that’s the difference between winning and losing.”
That could mean one of Herrington, McGowan or Benjamin Dechartres will drop out of the squad altogether for what is a crucial match.
While Coventry have won just once this term, they can at least claim to have been close to a second win on at least two other occasions.
Doncaster have yet to break their duck and sit below beleaguered Birmingham & Solihull in the Championship table.
“With the league structured the way it is, the must-win territory comes at the end of the season,” Maynard said.
“We have a long-term plan for this club to still be in the league next season so we can take the next step.
“This league is always going to be difficult but we have taken a quantum leap forward in some of our performances and we’ll look to do that again against Doncaster.”
