Coventry deducted 15 points

By Dave Barton, National Media Manager
December 16 2009

THE Rugby Football Union's Management Board today confirmed a 15-point deduction for Coventry RFC following notification on December 4 that the club had been placed into administration. Under the RFU's General Administrative Regulation 3.6, an insolvency event occurring during the season at a Guinness Premiership, Championship or National League club carries this level of penalty.

The RFU Management Board group delegated to deal with the Coventry situation continues to be in regular, and productive, dialogue with the administrators Begbie Taylor and the Union remains keen to support them as far as is possible.

Note to desks

* If an insolvency event such as liquidation or administration occurs at a club during the season the first team of a club playing in the Guinness Premiership, Championship or National Leagues shall suffer a deduction of 15 points. e.g Birmingham & Solihull RFC and Coventry RFC

* If an insolvency event such occurs at a club out of season the club may not commence playing in any competition without the approval of the RFU, who may at its discretion impose a deduction of league points in the following season e.g London Welsh (five points)

I really do not understand the logic or purpose of this deduction. You get into difficulties and you are promptly slapped with a wet piece of haddock. Why kick someone when they are down. This should be about performance on the field not on the balance sheet. No one can suggest that Cov have bought unfair advantage in pursuit of success. But at the present rate it won't really matter, with 3 Championship sides penalised already and probably more to come. Everyone back to square one? One lesson to be learned, is to go belly up in between season, that way you only get a discretionary 5 point reduction not a whopping 15. Who thought that one up.
