Clash against arch rivals is point of no return for Cov

RUGBY director Phil Maynard admits that Coventry face an uphill fight to avoid relegation after their home defeat by Birmingham & Solihull in the second round of Championship play-off games. The 22-18 loss sets up a do-or-die clash with arch rivals Moseley – who have also lost both their relegation pool games – at the Butts Park Arena on Saturday.
“This will be the defining moment,” said Maynard after seeing his side pass up a number of match-winning opportunities in the final quarter. “We have got to pick ourselves up and make sure we beat Moseley because our chances are running out.”
Cov were always chasing the game against a resurgent Bees, who have now won both their play-off games after going through the entire 22-game regular season without a single victory, and it was a bitterly disappointing outcome for Maynard against his former club.
“We had that many chances to win the game and shanked every one,” he said. “There was no shortage of effort again out there, but we made a lot of mistakes, left a few gaps early on, and when we needed a cool head in particular areas of the game, it wasn’t there.
“All the obvious things that you see we should do, we didn’t, and our key decision making was lacking.
“It makes it very difficult for us, but we are still in there fighting and can turn it around.”
