COVENTRY AND BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL

Wednesday May 26, 2010 Issued by Dave Barton The Rugby Football Union (RFU) Management Board today accepted the three-year business plans submitted by Birmingham & Solihull RC and Coventry Rugby Limited. As such, both clubs have been granted full membership of the RFU and will play at their respective levels next season - Birmingham & Solihull in the RFU Championship and Coventry
in National One.
The relegation of Coventry from the RFU Championship to National One and the promotion of Esher to replace them is now confirmed.
RFU Management Board Chairman Martyn Thomas said: "As both clubs went into administration this season and re-emerged as new legal entities or 'phoenix companies' it was important that they satisfied us that they had the money, resources and assets, including access to an appropriate ground at which to play their games, required for a club at their level.
"We therefore asked both clubs for comprehensive business plans that were validated and supported by required legal guarantees where appropriate. Both clubs provided these plans well within the required timescale and the RFU has done all the due diligence possible to ensure that those plans are robust and sustainable. The Management Board today decided that was the case and so these two great names of English rugby will now play as full members of the RFU."

Two great names in English Rugby? How long has Birmingham and Solihull existed under that name? One would think that some degree of longevity is required to be described as a great name. Yes I do know that they are still in the Championship. Next season might prove a challenge for them, as does the prospect of promotion for Cov

Quite agree. 'Great names' for Birmingham / Solihull (Pertemps whatever) hardly seems appropriate.

I agree, the only great over in Brum was and remains Moseley.
The Cov and Mose games over the years have been true local derbies.....Bees/ Birm Solihull or whatever they call themselves were just a junior club then and are of no account now.
They have no ground worth the name and support is dire, we will see them again after next season, maybe, or we could swap places.

i'll miss the MOS games next season but NOT the bees lets hope we do swop places with them that'll be a result,,, i've been thinking very hard over the last couple of weeks about what i'd be doing next season, at one point i'd said i wouldn't be going to watch COV, now after we know where we are and what we have to do i'm going to renew our season tickets and give the club all the support i can, i hope most of the supporters will do the same, get behind our team and be that 16th man, who knows we might even go straight back up, but without the support we won't, so i ask you all to forget whats happen and look towards next season and get to as many games as you can

i dont think we can forget what happened but suggest we need to put it behind us,. i intend to renew my season ticket , but want to see what the player recruitment policy, coaching set up etc is first-perhaps some statements will be made at next weeks open forum.

well said hipflask i also intend to renew as will my sister and also one for her indoors(although she rarely attends).

Anyone is entitled to post on your site and inter communication between clubs is generally acceptable and welcome. We receive postings from most of the Championship sides, and others besides,some welcome, some not, but at least have the decency to respond without becoming obnoxious.

I am not being obnoxious, but i am frustrated at reading silly remarks from our near neighbours which has gone beyond banter.
I accept the fact that other rugby fans come on here to comment, and I do to others, but I am always positive and constructive with my comments when a guest on another message board.
If someone doesn't like what they read here, they can easily switch to another site.

Joe Mac. You upbraid Cov Kid for obnoxious remarks, but do the same yourself. It is a fact that there is bad blood between the 2 clubs and that is colouring the current posts. There has been some veiled patronising from some at your end, so it is not surprising that there should be a negative reaction.

Nobody wants to be relegated but the consolation is that you will meet some great Clubs, real rugby people, that might just restore your faith and allow you to enjoy watching your team again (saturdays?).

Thanks for that Dave, I do get the hump at people making snide remarks on this message board and I think sometimes they think we cant read between the lines.
I react sometimes with humour or sarcasm and other times with blunt or silly remarks, but that is part of the banter.
In all honesty, when I post on other clubs message boards, I try to be polite and never "slag" them off in their own back yard, so to speak.

I actually paused to check I had logged into the cov rugby forum, not a CCFC forum.
Lads.. Rugby is a gentleman's sport. You get whacked on the pitch and its forgotten by the time you get to the bar. If it isnt you shake hands and wish one another a safe journey home.
We are where we are, everyone has their bugbears but there's absolutely no point burning bridges because this isn't football, and one day these two teams will meet again on the pitch.

Rugby is not know a gentleman's game. The introduction of professionalism has changed the game for ever. It is only natural that there is a negative reaction if someone posts with unfriendly intent. Gentlemen would not be constantly looking, for potential infractions of others, as has happened frequently with more than one club in recent times. Such things leave a sour taste in the mouth and can lead to bad blood.

I think times have changed the gentlemen have left the house.
Professional rugby changed everything, we at Cov tried to preserve what was good about the amateur game but as a result missed the boat.
Its a mistake made in the dim and distant past that we are still paying for today.
p.s. My sympathy to all in Cumbria affected by the terrible events of today.

i do not consider anyone's posts to be outrageous, just unnecessary. i have given no over reaction, by saying i'm upset, i'm talking about the relegation, not the words used. I just think the insults are unnecessary from BOTH sets of supporters. no more, no less.
i simply think its best as Hipflask said to leave things be. local rivalry is one thing but i believe as rugby fans we are all bigger and better than this.

To BJB. I too consider myself old school, but as I look around me, I can see that my world as I knew it, no longer exists and I have to deal with the world s it is now. I also grew up in Coventry's industrial world,where exchanges could be quite robust, but at least you know where you stood. Its gone mate and there is no going back.

Interesting comments Roger Fox and BJB. Good manners and being pleasant to one another are getting rare these days. Words that are written in the media and on message boards can offend some people. In this age of political correctness you do not know sometimes if talking to someone you are offending others. For example during a recent visit to town i was sitting on a bench but stood up to give my seat to an elderly Asian lady. Much to the disgust of another elderly white man on the same bench. Samaritans and cyrenians spring to mind during occasions like this. I hope and pray that i can continue the values that I was brought up with God willing.

sport is an emotional business. Sometimes, feelings run high and are expressed. All to the good, I say, as long as it does not tip over into overly aggressive or offensive behaviour.
I find Wimbledonesque politeness contrived and a bit self-regarding.
Cov rugby support, being slightly more blue collar than some English rugby clubs, has always had a plain-speaking, humorous character, which is one of things I like about the club.
