Coventry attract high-profile sponsorship

COVENTRY Rugby Club have secured a major sponsorship deal with a well-known worldwide brand. Club bosses are remaining tight-lipped about the identity of the heavyweight global company ahead of an official announcement before the season kicks off in September. But it is a massive boost for the new board, which is trying to rebuild the club after years of poor management.

And they are hoping that the high-profile deal will give other potential sponsors the confidence that the Butts Park Arena club now has a secure future.

Club chairman Peter Rossborough said: “This is absolutely fantastic news for the club, our sponsors, players and indeed the community of Coventry.

“We have attracted a global brand name as our sponsor and we could not be more excited as they share the same values as Coventry Rugby Club in terms of a commitment to the community and a real passion for sport.

“We believe this is a turning point in the fortunes of Coventry Rugby Club and we can now look forward with confidence and stability after several years of uncertainty.

“This tremendous sponsorship deal will send out a clear message to the world of rugby, our sponsors and to our existing and potential sponsors that Coventry Rugby Club has an exciting future.

“We will continue to respect and indeed cherish the club’s past glories but our commitment is to the future and to creating the ‘the new Coventry Rugby Club of the community. That is our mission.”.

The new board brought the club out of administration after former owner Andrew Green tried to put it into liquidation last year and are trying to reposition it as a community club.

Poor performances on the pitch in the second half of last season and a points deduction helped drag them into the relegation play-offs and Cov dropped out of the Championship into National League One.

Several of last year’s squad have left and rugby director Phil Maynard has added a lot of new faces as he rebuilds his squad to bounce back to the second tier.

Might it not be an idea to name the sponsor if they wish to attract other sponsors and perhaps attracting more supporters. Why have they not done so. Is it because this sponsor doesn't wish to be named just yet. If so fair enough.

Very quiet on this thread is it not. Throwing my hat into the ring I reckon that the sponsor will be announced on 21st August.

why would a sponsor want to delay being named? don't really get it and sincerely hope that it isn't a flash in the pan

Lets all hope it is a global player that has a few quid to spare!! Cov need some cash that's for sure! May be the club are waiting for others to come on board and will announce more than one sponsor, or maybe that's just wishful thinking? Either way hope there is money available and there is a long term plan to support the club.

1: Because they want to announce it on a day when a particular senior manager is around for press conferences or similar,

2: or alternatively, they don't want to be announcing it on a day when they're negotiating with someone saying that they are short of money,

3: or even just that although it's been decided that they will stump up the money, their internal financial governance procedures mean that they need to rubber stamp the cost before publicly announcing it,

4: or possibly, that they just don't want to - and as they're providing the money, that's their choice.
