Phil Maynard proud as Coventry kids take points home

RUGBY director Phil Maynard applauded his young guns after Coventry made a winning return to the Butts Park Arena with a 45-32 victory over Midlands rivals Stourbridge. Flanker Brett Daynes claimed two of Cov’s seven touchdowns in a 12-try thriller to get them off the mark in National League One on a day when the resurgent club
also announced a new major sponsorship link with Unipart Logistics.
“It’s a great result at home to prove to everyone that Cov are still here after all the troubles of last season, have a good team and are a credible threat,” said Maynard, whose starting side included 12 players making their home debuts. It’s a learning curve for everyone at the moment, and it’s great to see the way these players are stepping up.
“They listen to what they are told and you could see today that they have been well drilled by the coaches. We played some good rugby with great variety.
“Defensively we were a bit loose in the second half, but it was good to see that when it wasn’t going well for us towards the end we were professional enough to tighten up our game, tie the ball in and kick it off the park for the whistle.
“It’s too early to say what we can do this season, we’ve won one and lost one, but this group trains well, listens and plays well together, so who knows where they can go?”

OUr young guns were better than their younger guns,it seems.
PM..... when are you going to come out and appologise for last season and what you see as the way forward for this season ?
We as supporters don't want or ask for glib statements, we want to hear some fighting talk, some passion, what the team needs to do.... etc; etc;

Sound to me like they'd be nearly as negative and destructive as your postings. Try looking forwards, rather than harping back to a bad past.

totaly agree, and from what i watch he seems to have got a bunch of lads who will do use proud, so hats off to PM for sticking with it and trying to make amends for what must have been a very hard season for him, right its gone lets just have post with reference to this seasons performances,ok some will be a bit on the down side as like the 1st game at Tynedale, but possitives came out off that game and it looked like the coaches got the players to take it on board, the thing that stood out to me, was that with every score the lads really got a buzz, and at the end showed some real appreciation for the support given by the fans,and i ain't seen that in a good few seasons, even the last home games of the seasons the team never applauded those fans on the far side, just the odd one did, well done to the whole of the playing/coaching staff, onwards and upwards

You are both absolutely right of course, I am bitter and twisted about the way we went down last season.
Somebody should have paid for that failure......
I am pleased there are some good young lads pulling on the blue and white this season, but it will be a bumpy ride because results will always be erratic with youth.
PM needs to use all that experience he says he's got, to develop these players as quickly as he can and to pick a team to do a job on the stronger teams away from home.
I hope lessons such as Tynedale will be used as a benchmark for the rest of the season.

Along with an awful lot of supporters I was extremely upset when we were relegated. But, as mentioned several times on this board that is now in the past! We now have a new vibrant squad with a far superior attitude towards playing for Cov. After witnessing Saturday’s display I am full of excitement and enthusiasm, and may I hasten to add that I have not felt like this since the days of Hendry and Co. I’m now looking forward to supporting and watching this bunch of young guys grow into a fine team. I firmly believe there is a lot of potential, not only in the players but also with the new coaching structure.
Since being relegated I have spoken to Phil a few times (I have found him very approachable); he was and still is gutted about his team being relegated. He is working extremely hard behind the scenes, not just on the playing side of the business but also in the community. I firmly believe Phil and the board etc are slowly turning this club around.

I have to agree with the earlier posts. Last season is gone and dead, what happened happened and nothing will change that! The club has moved forward for sure and i think we are in a more stable situation now than we have been in for years! The players look like they have promise at this level and lets hope that PM has the ability to improve them along with his coaching staff. I believe now that Cov can rise once again but we must give it time, I'm sure we will be back in the Championship in a couple of years time? At this early stage of the season there is a buzz about the club that heas been lacking in recent seasons. Let us as supporters get behind the lads and hopefully they'll come good for us!

Hear, hear..... and I'm pleased to hear PM is working hard to make up for last season.
If he suceeds and does a stirling job, I will be pleased to change my views held over the last six months.
I will give credit where its due...... and I hope he makes me I eat my words.
