London Scottish v Coventry preview

This Saturday 20th November kick off 3pm Coventry travel away to The Athletic Ground, Richmond to face London Scottish. London Scottish were founded in 1878 four years after Coventry. They last played Coventry, home and away in the season 1997/8, with the home side winning.

Since the financial meltdown  London Scottish went through after 1998, they reformed at the bottom of the league structure, and 6 promotions in 9 years has seen them in NL1 where they finished last season, as runners up to promoted Esher. This season they are presently in 3rd position on 41 points closely behind leaders Barking and Cambridge.

Under full time Head Coach Simon Amor and Player Backs Coach James Brown, both of course known to Coventry supporters, they have 15 full time players and a playing budget reported to be more than some Championship clubs. Not surprisingly they started the season as firm favourites for promotion.

A blend of youth and experience, London Scottish started the season disappointingly with 3 straight losses, at home to Blackheath and Barking and a heavy away loss to Rosslyn Park.

However since then they have managed a winning streak of 8 games, including the last two over Cambridge and an away victory over the ubiquitous Macclesfield.

Fly-half player coach James Brown is leading point’s scorer, with leading try scorers wing David Howells and prop Alex Clarke.

Other players to note are new signings flanker Lewis Calder (Exeter), Josh Brown (Bristol), Andy Newman (Grenoble/Ospreys), Gary Trueman (Worcester) and flyhalf Lee Cholewa ex London Welsh.

A close encounter, but not short on tries is expected on Saturday with both sides buoyed by their recent runs. London Scottish will be looking to continue on their promotion push, whilst Coventry, after 3 straight wins will be confident of setting down a marker for the rest of the season.

Actually I think it was a draw at LS and a win for Cov at Coundon Road in the 1997/98 season. I seem to remember that Rob Hardwick and Alan Sharp, along with one of the LS props were sent off in the Coundon Road fixture. Let's hope things are calmer this time round.

will be very tuff, i'd settle for a bonus point or two, but L/S have started to pick it up after a very poor start to their season,,,

Reality tells us not to expect too much and a bonus point would be nice, but then these lads have confounded our expectations recently. I live in hope.

The secret is to come out of the blocks hard and fast, don't give them a chance to settle and then set up a decent platform from there.

Not saying we'll win but we might, and a BP would do.
