Dave Addleton's praise for Sam Herrington

FORWARDS coach Dave Addleton has praised Sam Herrington after the talismanic second row scored the try that brought Coventry a third successive league win.Only five minutes remained and his side trailed 16-10 when the big lock was shunted over for a seventh touch-down of the season that not only defeated high-flying Blackheath but also kept him near the top of the National One scoring charts.

Among the forwards, only Blackheath back rower Dave Allen has crossed the opposition line more times than Herrington, as the 24-year-old has emerged as one of the most important players in the Blue and White pack.

But Addleton says it isn’t just Herrington’s scoring touch that is so vital. “He seems to turn up in the right place at the right time,” he said.

“Credit to him for that because he has been struggling with a broken toe but he has showed up really well with his lineout work and ball-carrying.

“He is being more proactive with his game, he his a big lad and he has started carrying hard and low, getting his off-loads going and getting us over the gain-line.

“He’s been a good target for the whole team and is playing really well."

In fact Addleton reckons the whole side has started performing at a much higher level than at the start of the season.

Lee Audis has slotted in well at scrum half – and kicked the crucial conversion last weekend – Mike Walls has shown his flexibility by filling in at full back and the Cov back row continues to operate as an effective unit.

All of which means Blackheath went the same was as Launceston and Wharfedale. “We performed well,” the former hooker said.

“The boys have put in a lot of hard work over the past month or so and that is paying dividends on the pitch. Our defence is definitely a lot better, we are winning set-piece ball and we are getting over the gain-line.

“That was the fewest points we have conceded for some time, which is very pleasing. We went behind a try but we kept our composure, went up the other end and kept plugging away at them.”

Agree the last thing Cov need is bigger clubs coming to watch one of our star men!! Think Nick Southern deserves praise as well, sets a high captain's standard for the rest of team!

Well done Sam!
