Coventry RFC go back to basics for fitness training

PHIL Maynard has revealed the cancellation of Saturday’s National One game with Rosslyn Park allowed him to put the Coventry players through their paces.Once the club declared the Butts Park Arena pitch unfit for use, Maynard and his improving squad headed indoors to Woodlands School sports centre where they were all fitness tested. And the rugby director said the session provided some intriguing findings that have led to the coaching staff redrawing their training plans for the coming weeks.

“It threw up some interesting results, we are probably ten per cent down on where we should be and we need to address that on an individual basis,” Maynard admitted.

“We will be working this week on tailored programmes so that we can get back to the fitness levels we had before the start of the season.”

With the cold weather unlikely to abate in the next few days, the club are using their connections with the Coventry Sports Foundation to find as many suitable indoor facilities as possible.

They hope to use the Alan Higgs Centre today and perhaps Centre AT7 later in the week to ensure their preparations for Saturday’s trip to Redruth go as smoothly as possible.
