A Christmas message to you!

As I write this year’s Christmas message I frequently take a few seconds to look out of my front window and view the beautiful scenery of snow and ice, for many a year I have wished and hoped for a white Christmas, this year my wishes have been answered.

Whilst I’m talking of wishes; I certainly had a few when we were relegated at the end of last season.  The majority of last season’s players decided to jump ship and head for pastures new, the likes of Mike, Sam and Ben decided to stay and fight for our club.  Supporters were rightly disappointed and upset with the thought of relegation and watching third tier rugby.

After the trials and tribulations of administration during last year’s winter months, the reality of relegation was the straw that broke the camel’s back.  As a club we were broke and downbeat, our playing budget for the coming season would be a pittance compared to previous years.  As mentioned, players had jumped ship, and as a consequence the club made the decision to go with youth, to enrol young players that had never played at ND1 level.  It was a big gamble, but an educated gamble.

We know our players lack experience, we know they have and will make mistakes; it is a learning process for them and us.  But they passionately want to play for Coventry; they have shown pride and passion in the shirt every time they enter the arena, which was not evident last year.  I firmly believe they have the full backing of the supporters.  After all, we are quite simple folk; we only ask for 100% effort and commitment, our lads have delivered both in abundance.

Let’s remember this season is a season for consolidation.  Behind the scenes, the board are trying their utmost to generate monies to stabilise and strengthen our club. They have managed to get on board Unipart and the Council.  Unipart have kindly offered sponsorship for the season whilst the Council have been brilliant with the lease/rent.  There are many other groups to thank, all I’ll say is “you know who you are”, and from the supporters I say a sincere “Thank you, for your time and patience."

I now concede relegation was a blessing in disguise, it has given us the opportunity to take a good look at ourselves and put in place the tools to move our club forward.  To prove a point, I have copied the last paragraph from last year’s Christmas message:

‘I sincerely hope that I will be able to write a Christmas message this time next year.  Unfortunately, I do not possess the ability to see into the future, but I know the Coventry and rugby public will do their utmost to make my hope, my dreams come true.’

Thankfully with your help we survived, and my dreams came true!

Have a wonderful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Nice message Dave, thanks.
Thanks too, as hipflask says, to the cricket team in Oz who are giving us not only a game to follow in lovely conditions whilst we're stuck with nowt to do, but are drumming the bu**ers into submission. Makes Christmas all the more enjoyable, doesn't it?
Happy New Year to all, even, in my generous and blurred haze, to old Statler too.

Decent innings last night too (notwithstanding Belly's generosity).
Oh I do love to watch England beat the Aussies - at anything...
I just hope we haven't put the hex on things now (Sm123)
