Maynard calls for Coventry to 'grow up' after ND1 defeat.

PHIL Maynard has warned his young Coventry players they need to learn fast after poor decision-making condemned them to a fourth successive National One defeat. The Blue and Whites started slowly in their 34-27 loss to Rosslyn Park but managed to claw their way back into the match and with ten minutes remaining led 24-17.

But the choice to run a penalty from the Park 10m line, when a kick to the corner and sustained pressure would have been more advisable, resulted in a crucial turnover.

From there Park reeled off 17 points in eight minutes and while Maynard accepts it was another learning experience for his evolving side, he has told his squad they can’t keep making such important errors.

“We are a young side and young teams do that sort of thing – we just needed someone to run up, get hold of the ball and say ‘This is what we are going to do’,” the rugby director said.

“But we didn’t have that and while it is another learning curve for us we need to grow up quickly because we are in a very harsh environment where mistakes are punished.”

However, Maynard insists he is not concerned by Coventry’s slide back down the division.

Having started 2011 looking to break into the top six, the Butts Park outfit are now just three places and eight points from the relegation zone.

“I don’t even look at the table,” he said. “For us it’s just about concentrating on the next job in hand which is playing Barking on Saturday.

“That will be a difficult challenge but it’s also a real opportunity for us to make a step forward.

"We need someone who can run up and get hold of the ball and say this is what we are going to do". Is that not the captain's job. Is he not doing it? If he's not doing it replace him, or make sure that he is aware of his responsibilities, and if neccesary give him the appropriate guidance. One is tempted to think the D of R is failing in his responsibilities if what he is saying is true.

Yes I did fear the midnight knock on the door, so I was as tactful as possible with my words. You would hope that an honest non abusive comment would be acceptable and received in the right spirit.

The thing that concerns me about this article is that he intentionally signed a young inexperienced squad, now he is telling them to grow up! Not too fair on the players me thinks.

I just hope that the lads have enough to stay in this league

Maynard says he dont look at the tables. Well he bloody well should. Maybe thats why he managed to get us relegated, because he dont look at whats going on around him. What an absolute tool he is.
Never mind though, its all good, he knows what he is doing, ask him he will tell you how good he is.

It will be interesting to see what the result will be on Saturday after more words of wisdom!!
For our players it must be like playing premiership teams every week. We need to survive this season and strengthen for next season.
I feel cheesed off when they lose at home. Do long passes, kick the ball straight to the opposition, overlapping and easy conversions missed.
I will always support Coventry and watch them.

The club captain hasn't played for three weeks, first due to 'flu, and then due to his wife having just had a baby. I'd expect he'll be back this week, particularly as the stand-in captain played most of last week's match with a very obvious injury and may well be out this week.

experience is only gained from making mistakes, and then learning from them, we're making them week in week out, but not learning from them, i actualy think this is a player problem, not being able to cope in the heat of battle, how/who to solve this, answers on a postcard please

Captain or Vice-Captain, it is still his responsibility to make the decisions.

thats well and good at set pieces, which at times wrong decisions are made, its in open play that we let ourselfs down badly, when to keep it tight or open it up, panic seems to kick in at times, when a clear/steady head is needed

good luck today boys

Quite right Hipflask, but this discussion started around a set piece decision by Coventry, which led to a score by the opposition. In breakdowns it should be well established that the scrum half or pack leader controls the forwards and the fly half in open play.

I'm with Al on this one... Going out of your way to employ a team of young players and then telling them to grow up is just plain silly.

Not looking at the table when you're "DIRECTOR" of rugby? Where's he directing them if he doesnt have a clue where they are or what's coming next?

Last time I checked Sam Herrington was second in line for the top try scoring position in the league, and as captain too. I dont think he's done a bad job in Nick's absence, and seems he has a knack for grabbing the ball and saying "this is what we're going to do with it".
